Just to add, Darrell's gear worked flawlessly, yet again. Without his gear, this project would not be possible. Thx Darrell (a.k.a. Sierra Giant Scale Retracts)!
And, I must thank Richard Rawle from the UK for supplying the the cowl, canopy, spinner cone and resin cast exhaust stacks.

Here is a link to the maiden (6 for the day). Spent the day flying, adjusting carbs and now I just need to try a new prop as the one ZDZ recommends for the 210 inline provides a ton of pull/thrust, but no speed. Next it to try a 32X12 and a 30X15 and tach them out. As you will she, she flew well, but moved slow.

AAAHHHH, bigger is better!
Those big planes eat up a lot of real estate, when landing.
Looks cool, dude.
I think Manny had a 210 in his P-47, you might try him (I don't have his email or last name).
Did some googling:
Manny Huysentruyt
video say 32X14 on a 3W-210:

Nice job Jeff....takeoffs and landings looked about as scale as it gets! I see what you mean about the speed, but it sure looked like it flew very well. By the third flight it sounded like the ZDZ was running better... not quite as rich as the first two. Bet with the right prop she'll move out!

Thx Jeff.
I just found video from France. A guy has a 101 pound Spit the same size as mine, with the same ZDZ210 inline. He is running a 32x12 prop, which was my next prop to be tested. Looks like he had pretty good performance. Looks promising.

I was getting 4600 on the ground with the 34x12. Talked with Brian O'Meara, and he is running the ZDZ 420 flat 4 (2 ZDZ 210's bolted togehter). He is running a 38X18 at 4400 rpm on the ground. The ZDZ is a low RPM motor, so I need pitch at around 5-5200 RPM to be happy, I think. The ZDZ210 inline is red lined at 6500 RPM.

i am running a 32x12 on my dle 222 and am turning aroung 5100 with a rich mixture. I have bought a 32x10 to try, i would like to see at least 55-5800 to break in my new engine.
I agree with you on trying a 32" prop. Using a thrust calculator it says your current prop at 4600 rpm is only providing about 52mph loaded air speed.
If you are able to bump your rpm to 52-5500 i think you spitfire will come to life.
I dont know about you but tuning 2 carbs is giving me the fits. I can tune a single engine carb in my sleep but 2 carbs is a different animal. In the air i can hear at least one carb running rich but which one.

I agree Mike......I can also hear burbling in my twin...but you and I know you need to be gentle on tweaking the rear carb. On mine, I am pretty sure it is the rear carb, but I am not quite ready to lean it out anymore just yet.

Well, we had a state trooper stop out at the field today. He went to the end of the runway in his squad car and pointed the radar gun at the Spit. I got a run at him twice. He clocked the Spit at 94 and 98 MPH...that's pretty good. Using the Bolly 30X15 prop at 5K rpm on the ground. Luckily, no speeding ticket was issued. I will be putting the Spitfire away for the year. I ended up with 16 flights on it for the year. Muffler keeps coming loose, so I need to find a way to prevent that. Otherwise a great season (short) with the Spitfire.

Thought I would post a picture of the Spitfire in action at Warbirds and Classics over the Midwest, 2012. Photo by Palmer Johnson, sent to me by Carl Bachhuber. Unfortunately the chin cowl is still off as I am still breaking in the engine. And I need to find a way to cover up the 4 holes for access to the muffler bolts. That is one heck of a i res camera Palmer uses.
