Need a 12 ft. Spitfire Cowl-any moldmakers out there?
I have plans to build a 12.2 foot Spitfire in the winter of 2006. What I need is a cowl. What I am looking for is a person who can make a one-off or mold for the cowl using top and bottom views. I am not good with foam, but will do it if I have to. What I am offering is to pay cash for the work, or I would offer to supply a short kit for that person (consisting of wood formers and wing ribs, and other odd pieces TBD), along with a set of plans, to build their own 12.2 Spitfire. I plan to run a 3W150 inline in this project, and predict it to weigh around 75 pounds. Gear will be from Sierra. Anyone available and interested?.......Vic, you out there?

Thx Paul, but Richard Rawle appears to be difficult to deal with on this subject. I have, for 1-2 years, sent him no less than 6-10 e-mails. He has not responded to any of them.......nothing.
Tom LAzar: can you PM me your phone number? I haven;t talked to you in a while. Thx

You might want to look at our new V twin 150 for better cooling,
and we will have a reduction drive for it also.

I know that it is more powerfull then the regular 150 boxer as it is really two 80's and our engines are quite powerfull.
We have it in standard mode, competition (anadized) and Magnesium which is lighter.

Just let you all now that I will final finish off the the drawings for both the 1/4 and 1/3 spitfire latter in the year. Hope fully over the summer hols ( im a teacher). It will be sold as a package. ( plan and parts) Im afraid it got put on the back burner because of changing jobs. The model is fully built up. No foam. The only change that the model has is its been re engined beging of last year with a DA150 with has been modifid to fit. It now done over 180 flight with no problems at all.
Happy landings
Richard Rawle.

So, I am sad to say that this plane has taken me 3 winters to build. I did get it built, and it has been glassed since January of 2009. now it is time to finish it up. I will post some pictures of the build, as some friends have requested, but I plan to knock this thing out this winter and get it in the air spring 2010. Here we have the fuse up on the crutch jig and the rear formers thrown on and glued.

Here is the stab. Built with a 3/32 balsa core and half ribs added to both sides. Spar added and then sheeted with 1/16 balsa. Next, stab was added to the fuse, along with the fin post and the rudder for posterity. Also, these are some pictures of Richard Rawles flying 12 foot Spit that was my inspiration to build this plane.

Jeff,
What a monster! Looking good.
What engine is it that you picked there? I am glad to see you didn't go with a DA-150 as planned in the beginning. Having head fins stick out the sides on the front would have been ugly. This in-line engine with a slight offset to the cylinders will be much better.

Here the firewall has been fitted to the fuse and some more top sheeting added along with a test fit of the pilot. I took a shot of the fuse formers helping to form the fillet. This will be a big help when making the fillets; over having to shape out with blocking, sheeting, etc.

Here the fuse has been taking off the crutch jig after enough top sheeting has been added to keep it from "walking or twisting". Here I am fitting the fore and aft wing bolt plates and have fitted the tailwheel from Darrell at Sierra. Then, just a random shot of the fuse inners before closing it up.

Bottom section gull sheeting going on. Best thing to do here is get the balsa wet and let it set overnight, weighted down to take the shape of the formers. Worked very well. I soaked the rear bottom sheeting in the bathtub. The spit fuse has a very tight radius near the tail. I hate strip planking, so this works well. Now I need to fit the servos, pushrods and control horns for the elevator and rudder. I'm off to a welding supply shop to buy some stainless steel welding rod to make up the rod ends. I added some strips of balsa to the bottom fuse just to help hold it straight.
