Got mine onto the strip on Friday. Wind was gusting a bit too much for a 1st flight, especially as the sky was some kind of RLM colour, however I did do some fast taxing runs.

I was pleased to find that the ground handling was a little better than the full size was reputed to have! Some care is needed, however I was able to get a number of straight runs with the tail lifting at the end.

Just need a decent day to actually fly it!

Brad, interested in your tank mount. So far I have left mine unchanged, however it is significantly above the carb of my Laser 150. Motor ran OK in the above trials though, so fingers crossed. Have left all detail (including the plastic radiators) off until I get this thing flown.

I received my TY cockpit today from Tomas at VQ. Brought some auto Plastic primer on the way home as well. I think the Warbird Colours will stick to that better than straight to the plastic.
I quickly did some trimming which included filing and sanding the control column and it looks very nice. Now I have to watch the cockpit built video again
Old mate pilot fits well in the seat.
That elevator servo is all mounted in the nose and I did the RX switch last night as well. Look'n good.

Cheers,

Brad

Ok I'm on sentry duty tonight (baby sitting) so am out of the shed.
This afternoon though, I got to cut out the cockpit deck after measuring a couple of times to double check dimensions.
One thing I saw straight away while watching the cockpit install vid done by TY http://www.youtube.com/user/emprivat.../8/HWdDCHVqF3s was that my tank mount would be very close to where I would have to cut for the front of the cockpit but it seems to be OK. The tank might just have to be forward of the CG where I would like it but fit is now very important. I will adjust as required any way. Tomorrow I will cut out the former and tank deck as described in the vid and prime the plastic and resin pieces.

Cheers,

Brad

Just got back from Vienna on family business...I did not post these before I left...

Brad, you inspired me lol...

It still needs abit of clean up, but looks ok I think...

I made new gear doors(changed the shape abit too) from two sheets of 1/64th ply laid at a 90 degree to one another, with a layer of Fliteskin on the inside...just lay on the wing, hit it with some thin CA and hold until its set...holds the curve quite nice, and took all of 5 min to make ....just need to touch up tomorrow and lay in some final paint on the lower of the wings.

the gun blister is just laying on the wing at the moment, I still need to attach them too.

I also hit the inside of the wheel wells with a first coat of RLM 02 Grau, still need to shoot the gear yet.

I still have not gotten any of my ESC's back from Castle Creations as of yet....

I should have a proof from GetStencils.com tomorrow for the Galland scheme

geesh now I'm gonna have to do something about those wing radiators....

....wasnt going to do anything to this one lol....

geesh

THAT looks so nice. Hope I can get some pictures like that real soon. Only going to spend another week on the cockpit and then that is it! (about 3 or 4 hours worth) I have started a thread about the cockpits from Tysplanes here http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10732701/tm.htm

Will then be doing a bit of paint mottling and go fly.

Glazier, the wing radiators don't take too long Looking good there with the wheel wels and you have given me an ides for the wheel covers. The ones I have out of aluminium are a bit flimsy so two thin sheets of ply will be the go. Cheers for that.

Cheers to all,

Brad

Next is elevator pushrod out of a carbon fibre arrow shaft.

Any news with you guys?

The cockpit looks nice! should set the plane off nicely!

I recieved an order confirmation from Castle Creations, so my ESC's will be back within the week...

Here is a nice video for you.

It is Ta152's ESM 109 E in action. It is filmed with an old east german camera and film.

So the quality is, how shall I put it....realistic?

The flying is very realistic too. I think the result is quite spectacular!!!

Enjoy; (And for those that claim that ESM warbirds are too heavy, and that the 109 is so difficult to land, well, look for yourself

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5J4roZc-Ts

Edit; New Version with proper music!;

(And the camera was newer, but the film is german 8 mm)

Cool video! As you say the quality makes it look like old WW2 footage!

One day I will fly mine! Was all set to go last week when I discovered that the throttle trim on my 6 month old JR DSX9 had stopped working! I didn't want to do a maiden with a misbehaving Tx so flight operations were suspended.

Tx has gone back to the distributor. I still have my Dx7 but I would need a matchbox to set it up like the DSX9, so I will wait until the JR gets back.

As far as weight is concerned my 109 is much lighter than the 190. I checked the CG several times as no weight was needed with a Laser 150 installed.

Yes, that it a cool vid. Most of it looks very period.

Now that my cockpit is all in I am able to progress to the end of putting this thing together and today I installed (glued on) the horizontals. Now I only mention this step as I was able to save some more weight down the tail end by;
1/ cutting about 40mm of aluminium joining tube off the end as it was just so long and didn't need to be. I found this out when I was initially putting my model together for a look when the sleeve came out of the horizontal tail. The tube went way past the second rib into nowhere.
2/ substituting the kit tail braces with some aerofoil shaped aluminium tube I had in the 'stores box' It probably could have been the next size up but looks fine and will stay like it is after a coat of paint.

In the pictures you will also see the 'tail section spreader' near the joiner tube I measured and adjusted so the outside glue surface was closer to flat and not concave creating a bit of a gap between the fuselage and the tail sections. I loaded up the surfaces with glue and let it squeeze out and then cleaned it up with methylated spirits (denatured alcohol you guy call it??)

Now I can install the elevators and finalise the pushrod. All coming together now. Man what an epic! I would like to know what the shortest time some one has taken to get one of these things going.

Cheers,

Brad

I got the elevator pushrod done today. The pictures tell the story and I can tell you it is virtually slop free and works well. I made the pushrods out of carbon fibre arrow shafts and inserted and glued and wrapped some inner from a Sullivan Golden Rod so my 4-40 threaded rod would be able to screw straight in. These rods are straight, stiff, strong and light. Awesome. The bell crank (although a straight one) is mounted on a length of 10mm balsa with hard wood either side front and back. Where the screw goes through there is thin ply top and bottom and then the whole lot is covered with carbon cloth. This weighed a bit more than what I wanted but it had to be strong, and strong it is.
The best thing about today though was when I put it all together and ran my pull-pull wires for the rudder,,,, it just misses the elevator rod[8D]

Starting to finish.

Looking really good there, Brad!!

Just out of curiosity...Why the bellcrank instead of just a straight shot to the elevator horn?

Just couldn't get a straight run past the cockpit floor mate.
The rear pushrod is at quite an angle from the rear of the cockpit to where it exits under the tail plane and the one from the servo is quite flat so to speak.

OK, latest update is that the pull-pull system for the rudder in all hooked up and operational. This is with the tail wheel hooked up as well like I previously showed with my Youtube clip posted earlier on. I just threaded the wire through the tiller arm a couple of times making sure I had the required lengths to keep every thing centered and attached it to the rudder and that was it. Not much up the tail end at all.

Next, remount engine, plumb and install tank,,, and ,,, oh dear ,,, I might get to fly this thing on the week end.[X(]

Cheers,

Brad

After running my Saito 150 on the bench a couple of times (it is second hand, bought from here on RCU) and being happy with being able to start it and how it ran, I final mounted it and was able to make the throttle linkage. Now this is the shortest linkage I have ever made and it has no slop at all. Next was to add a pressure nipple out of my flexi exhaust so I bent a bit of brass tubing to 90 degrees and JB welded it in position. Now this was taking a long time to go off so hopefully it will cure OK. I hope also that I have done the inside pickup side of things right. You can see it in the picture so comment if I have done it wrong and i'll file it flatter. I have a fair bit of tubing between the tank and the carby so thought a pick up like this would add a bit more pressure for the tank to help supply the fuel.
So RX is hooked up and everything works except ailerons as I am waiting on a longer 'Y' lead for them. Gear works, all throws set including throttle and I put the whole lot together to do an initial CG check. Now the good part.

With NO WEIGHT ADDED,,, CG is about 120mm,,,, so it should not take too much lead to get right. Now this was a rough test and the exhaust was not on but it is a good indication.

A bit more to do but getting there. (This is an ARF isnt it??)

Couple of picture to see what it looks like.

Cheers,

Brad

You can mount your receiver battery right behind where you put your throttle servo so no dead weight should be needed hopefully. 120mm for CG is definitely too far aft, but 112mm seems to be the optimal location from what Ive experienced with two of these planes.

Also...if you have an onboard glow system, mount that right up behind your throttle servo as well.

On my glow version(saito 180), I have two 1500mah 4.8 volt rx batts powering the onboard glow and these are sitting along side the fuel tank on either side right up behind the firewall. My receiver has a separate 1500mah 6v stuff up under the fuel tank. I did not have to add dead weight lead as a result.

On my electric version, the two 4s 5000mah lipos are pushed as far forward as possible(basically where the fuel tank would sit) on a plywood tray. No dead weight needed on this one either.

Yes thanks for that kahloq. The 2500 mah sub 'C' size 6 volt battery is as far forward as possible.
I will do a proper balance check and post the results before the weekend. 112mm you reckon ay?
I will shoot for 110mm. (or so)

Looking good Brad !!, will have to get the Hurricane cleaned up & ready for ya ! needs the low end needle leaned & I think I may have a cooling problem developing as the temps are rising, going to do the tuning first as it may have been a cylinder fouling up, running a little to rich when below half throttle.
How's the Saito 150 sound with the flexi pipe, they give the 200 a real crack when she fly's over.
all the best for the maiden Steff.

Hi Steff, yeah, dust it off mate I am getting there. I am going for a maiden this weekend If I get all the little jobs done (tidy up really). Tonight after checking the CG on my balancer I found that I am closer to the mark than what I thought. With the flexi exhaust not fitted I am at 105mm with no extra ballast added. This is even better than I reported earlier and I do apologise for the misinformation but I was excited to see how close I was and used my fingers to get an idea. Shows you how far you can be out if done like that. Now with my pilot on board who by the way will be a light bodied Properlittlepeople with the Elite Forces Luftwaffe head, hands and cloths on, the CG should be spot on. So cool.[8D]

Tonight I also made the cover for the access hatch that allows me to get all my gear as far forward as I did. I did some covering with Profilm and then used three layers of 2oz cloth with West Systems. A bit of a trim and a couple of screws will see it keeping the dust out. I shall paint this RLM02 and it should help hide the air exit hole in the bottom of the cowl. Now,,, this set up means that I will have to remove the spinner, prop and cowl if I want to get to things so I had better make sure I have things set and fully serviceable before each weekends flying.

Cheers,

Brad

HMmmmm, just noticed gear is extended for CG check. Ahh well it will still be close. Will do it full on properly before flight.

105mm will be too nose heavy and you will nose it over often unless real careful, but like you said, adding the pilot may help bring it back to 110-112.
