Default P51 Sherman Was Right!!!!!

Hi all,

I have been building a Comp P51 for a customer and have just finished off the office,so I'm ready for the good bit, giving her the chrome finish she deserves.

I have tried all of the metal finishing in the past but this one is the nuts.

Started off with the spare cowl that was supplied by the customer, and for a dry run and getting it right, with this finish you have to meticulous with all the prep work if not it will definitely show through.

Here are some pics of the cowl to give you an idea of this finish, photos do not do this justice and i'm not using a flash.I have also attached some of the cockpit.

What do you think.

Cheers Graham.

Graham, that's a very nice looking cowling for the Mustang. I can't wait to see the finished plane. You using some sort of technique similar to the metal-morphing?

Keep at it, looks A+ try not to go insane with the rivets or screws

Great looking work..
FYI, the Pilot Frank Oiler is alive and well and living in Ohio at 84 years old. His son sent me an email just last year about his dad after discovering, via the internet, that I planned on doing the Thunder Bolt "Elieen" that Frank flew with the 78th before they flew the Mustangs. I'm sure he would love to see your work as well.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the interest in the P51.
Regarding the rivets and screws ,they are already in the fuse as it is a Fibber Classics {COMP ARF}

I will keep you guessing on the finishing techniqueas I said it is the best I have seen,my good friend JasonP51D is coming round to have a look and take some better pics with his digital camera, should be better than the camera in my phone.I have attached a pic of a car done in the same technique, let me know what you think.

Hi Bob,

It would be a great honor if you could send some pics to Frank once it is finished,it would be good to see what he thinks.
Bob I would be very grateful if you could ask him, or if you know of any other pics of Sherman Was Right, just so I can do it justice.

Cheers Graham.

Eric I could be wrong but it might be a product called mirrachrome by a company called Alsa
I found this picture of the mirrachrome, this is a paint type product and not a real aluminum. Looks like real chrome though[8D]

Hi Ron,

Yes,you got it one,I know this is not real aluminum but it may as well be,I'm still getting to grips with this product using different base coats with high gloss finishes.

I have opted just for the flat black base coat and then wet and dried back, this gives a more authentic look rather than the high gloss base coat as it comes out to shiny if there could be such a thing.

I have just finished off the checker board on the nose and after about three rolls of masking tape it's finally done.

Added the service hatches on the nose using some offset hinges left over from my jet days[8D].

Now the fun begins painting the hole fuselage Black, well I opted just a few panels at a time, and you can see Sherman is coming to life.

I really need to get a digital camera as all these pics are from my Phone and do not do this justice.

Cheers Graham.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for your kind comments on the P51, I'm just waiting on the new batch of paint to come in and hopefully it will be cheaper on a larger amount, the stuff is like gold dust but worth every penny.

Ron It would be good to see you over here in the UK,maybe you could bring your P38 over with you for us all to drool over.

My next plan is to do a Ziroli P38 with the Chrome Paint but I'm trying to get the full glass kit from Ziroli ,unfortunately they wont sell them to the UK[]so if you know anyone with a full glass kit Drop me a Mail.

Cheers Graham.

Hi Jetjock

I am also going to use the alsa ghost chrome on my comp arf but I am no where near that stage yet. I can see you have done a fantastic job on the cockpit --just wondering if it is from scratch or can you tell me where you got the parts for it

Hi all,

Sorry it's been a while but I have been working on a Yellow P40 40 for another customer.

After the first trials of the paint I decided to rub it all back[]and start afresh, this time adding High gloss black panels to the fuzz and the rest off the fuzz flat black.

After applying all the base coats you have got to wet and dry it all back and then with a bit of work buff it all to a sheen, this takes a while.

with this paint finish you have to be meticulous with all the prep work as any small mark or even finger prints will show through.

I think all the hard work has paid off,so I'm just waiting for it to cure then I will top coat it with {SPEED CLEAR}then apply all the markings then coat it again.

Here are some pics, but as I have always said the pics do not do them justice,so I have bought a digital camera but I have still got to load up the software, so here are some pics from my Phone.

Cheers Graham.

I second the above, what cockpit kit did you use?

It looks very nice, most cockpits you see in this particular Mustang are slightly off, usually a result of trying to squeeze a true 1/4 scale cockpit into the 1/4.5 scale Comp ARF Mustang. Yours on the other hand doesn't appear to be out of proportion, well done, very nice indeed. [sm=thumbup.gif]

Can you give us some more information on it please.

Regards

Adrian

Hi Adrian,

Sorry for the slow reply,

The cockpit parts ar all scratch built apart from the Instrument panel and gun-sight which I sell through Tigermodels,I can how ever scratch build the parts for you and other interested p51 guys.

I now have the digital camera working and will take better pics of the cockpit before it gets handed over to the customer.

Here are some more pics of sherman in black,I,m just putting on all the paint masks at the moment and will take some more later.

cheers graham.

I have an Aerotech Mustang on the list, and are very interested in this thread.

You are doing a fabulous job on your one Graham.

One question, why are you painting black over the natural polished aluminium when the original is mostly natural finish?

I was originally going to Flitemetal the Aerotech, but it seems sacreligious to cover up all the included details molded into the fuse and wings, so your finishing technique is very appealing...

More info please

Thanks!

Goose

Hi Goose,

Thanks for the compliments on the P51.

Regarding the Black paint, the black is done first,I know the Comp ARF P51 comes in silver Gel coat but it is not chrome it is more like metallic Grey.
The black base coat is needed to give it's reflective shine and also adds depth to the overall finish once the chrome is applied.

I too was going to cover it in Flitemetal but you would loose all the detail ,so you would have to do it all again, and all those ours of riveting, plus the good thing about this method is no pealing around the compound curves.

Here are some pics of her after some of the paint masks were applied.{Sherman Is Coming to life at last}.

We are selling the paint masks and decal sheets from {Taylor Made },and are great, so easy to apply, if you are interested in these decals just let me know,or if you want a one off we can supply.

Cheers Graham.

Hi Graham...

My pleasure, she is a beauty!

Ah, i see... thanks for clearing that up

I agree with the Flitemetal comments too, I will probably FM my interim project, the TF Giant P-51 to play with while building (and saving!) for the Aerotech.

I am very interested in the decal set in 1/5th scale... as soon as i have decided on the final scheme, I will let you know to see what you can do.

Thanks for the offer!

Cheers

JetJock:
Take a look at my 101 inch Seafury done in aluminm, Cuban markings.
I used Bob Violett Jet models Metal Kote II on it. The finish came out fantastic.
It has an Airworld 215CC radial engine.

It is the aluminum seafury # 541.
Here is one of the sites it is on.

hi graham, love to bring the Hellcat to cosford, but im not going to be able to make it[&o] see if you have any room in your van, you can take it to show it off!! your comment about the way the LMA detail stuf is strange, we was speaking about it last weekend at wings n wheels! there models are big and impresive but only at a distance, up close they dont have any detail at all[:'(] no panel lines, hatches even cockpit detail....yuk!!!!!

jasons dads P40 is looking good, ive seen the way you do panel line detail, Nigel used to do it that way, it looks a much quicker and easy way of doing it, the way i do it takes ages!![]
are you going to gear it up for him or just do the paintwork? you will have to bring Jason down to meet the rest of us, come and drule over WW11 aircraft all nite!!!

the King 100 is going off to be repaired and sorted this week, when it gets back il be finishing off the thunderbolt, looking forward to finally flying that, if the engine is naff il be on the lookout for another one, sounds like a trip down to see Mick!!!!!

catch up wiv ya soon
