Hanger 9 P51 with Saito100 & Keleo Muffler
I have a H9 60 size P51 with a Saito100 and a Keleo Muffler. The engine is inverted. I'm having a hard time getting it to run at idle without overheating and quiting. The back pressure from the mufffler makes it necessary to lean out the low side considerably but I'm running the high side pretty rich (It's a new engine). If I put it on the runway and taxi around it runs fine for about a minute then quits. I've taken the engine off the plane and ran it right side up with a stock muffler and it runs cool and smooth.
Can someone with the same setup help?
Thanks, ajensen3

I have the same setup but I use a Perry Pump and onboard glow. I also ran over a gallon of Coolpower 15% fuel through the engine on a test stand before installing it. When breaking it in I had it inverted and with the Keleo exhaust system in place. I made sure everything was the same as it would be in the plane. Never had a heating problem or engine stalling.

Just an obvious question: Do you have the air inlet area of the cowling cut out? Also, you need to cut the rear area of the cowling out at the bottom with larger area than the inlet. I've ran a Saito 91 on mine and a couple of others at my field fly the same plane with the 100 with no problem.

I don't have the Keleo exhaust system (yet) but I had a similar problem with a Decathalon and an O.S. 160. 2 years and dozens of modifications never helped the situation of leaning out in flight and going deadstick. I never had a power on landing in the first 28-30 flights. Then, I put on one the Iron Bay regulators. Works perfectly. Don't know how else to say it. Unbelievably low idle, instantaneous transition. I highly recommend it if cowl ducting is not the issue.

Can you richen the high needle so that it will not run? If so then no worries about fuel draw. Tank placement can be important and cause running issues. How does it do if the cowl is off. If it runs fine then make sure the hot air exit is large enough. Seems like not a lot of intake air is needed if channeled correctly but the exhaust area must be large enough or you will get cooling problems. One to two - intake to exhaust area should work fine.
