I'm probably not doing something right, but I'm having a difficult time getting RS 333 RB Lados to fit into my Hellcat properly. The entire retract assembly is at an angle, sothe rake of the landing gear will be too far back regardless if piano wire or RoboStruts are used. As it is, the Lados are elevated in the front (farthest from the wheel\actuator) by about 3.5mm; the back of the mounting plate is touching the surface of the plywood rails. In order to get the retract to sit level, it is needed to remove more material from the spar. However, I donot want to remove any more from the spar area and take a chance on weakening the integrity of the wing.

Please see the attached pics. Any insight would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks!

In post 1520 I asked a question about the stock plastic turnbuckels and attaching Robo struts....am I assuming correctly that the turnbuckels stay? Also, does anyone have any experience with the company named Down and Locked...this company retrofits stock mechanical landing gear into electric operating gear..

The Robostruts are just tubes with other tubes and springs and such, but still simple tubes. They have nothing about them that could effect th 90degree rotation. Those turnbuckles work the collar that holds the wire that is used to attach the strut. Without the turnbuckles, the strut would spin freely. Not a good thing.

So im installing the saito 100 inverted on my hellcat, and i pretty much got the tubing exactly where it needs to be in the firewall and former #2 for my throttle linkage i install the engine and now the throttle wire is binding big time, the carb moves in and out i guess thats whats causing the binding problem, does anyone have a fix for this, thanks.

Look at the pic in post 1508 for the throttle linkage location. It's a straight shot to the servo. The carb on my saito 100 does not move, better check that also.

Haroldp06, when you open and close your carb on your saito looking into the throat of the carb it doesnt slide out when opened and then slides back in when closed?

So with your location of your hole your good i guess, well i removed the throttle housing and im going with a different style since they only give you one in the kit, and my LHS doesnt carry much hanger 9 stuff like that, good looking out on your help.

Hello,

Have you seen a picture of the Torque Link facing forward on a Hellcat? To me it looks as if they did not have one on the pictures I've seen...but haven't seen one close up. It would be great to know for sure; I'm assembling mine over the next few days.

Apparently F6F struts had the knee pointing forward:

The real Hellcat had a Bevel gear on the top of the strut and part of a circular rack to rotate the gear. The Robart 60 size rotating retracts are a variation of this type.

Seen a picture? I've got 3 different "Hellcat in Action" (OK, one is "Hellcat in Detail") booklets. Every picture you can see that detail in shows the links pointing forward.

Bottom line, is that they are really hard to see. The gear door fits very close over the linkages and they aren't very large.

I did stand off scale gear doors from scratch, fiberglassed balsa. The mfg provided ones are pretty awful. The full scale are curved and have a characteristic and significant shape. Mine are close to the shape and real close to the size. And as you can see, the linkage is hardly visible in model sizes.

BTW, I'm not done yet. The doors at the top of the struts aren't done yet. I couldn't stand it when I got it this close to done and had to fly it.

I'm getting ready to cut my cowl right now. The 100 saito muffler comesout in the center of the bottom
Hey Harold p06, did you modify your firewall bulkhead holes for your engine mount screws or did you use what they have there, when i installed my engine per the hellcat instruction book it put my muffler way off to the left, and i want it coming out the bottom like yours, thanks bro....[sm=confused.gif]

I used the holes already there. Had to move it around alittle to get in the center of the cowling. Also the 100 saito is all the way out on the supplied engine mounts. Hope this helps.

Ok, I've got Robo 650's on the way...I sure hope it isn't too big of a PITA to fit these. And I'm still not crazy about the stock retact mechanism/ball link durability. Lado's sure would be a nice replacement.

Haroldpo6, did you have to cut your cowl to clear for the valve covers or did they fit inside the cowl pretty good, thanks..

One thing to keep in mind, the stock landing gear is 5/32" and the Lado's will use 3/16" music wire. So you will need a new set of RoboStruts if you move to Lado's later as that bushing is permanent once installed. Obviously you could cut off the portion with the 5/32" bushing and reinstall, but that would not look the greatest IMO.

Maidened mine yesterday and it's sweet. Very sweet.

I've got the CG a bit behind the mfg's suggested location and it's still a touch light in the tail when ground handling. And flies like a dream. How did I deal with the "less than super safe CG"? Took off on low rates and paid close attention to how sensitive the pitch control was. After noting that, I flipped to high rate elevator and checked out how sensitive it was to high speed stalls and how low speed handling was at high rates. It was good. So now I figure to move the battery further back and know it will still handle good if a bit "sports car-ish". I like sports car handling. And like good ground handling too.

The combination of Robart struts and the new e-retract LADOs I got last week is probably why the thing handles so good. The gear working on landing to absorb bumps looks awesome. And the robostruts don't lean in the turns. Am I tickled? you betcha

Hello All!  I will maiden my Hellcat tomorrow evening weather permitting.  I had a good time building this plane, the only setbacks were the cowl packaging problem that used to be prominent with the factory putting the cowl in the tissue before the actual paint was dry.. nothing a good cleaning and a quick shot of vulspar clear coat wouldn't take care of.  I had an old ASP .91 Fourstroke on hand and didn't wanna spend anymore money on a buying a new 1.00 saito so put it in... the CG came out pretty tail heavy.  I mounted the 5 Cell Battery Pack to the firewall like you would an ignition to get the most out of its weight. Now its much better but still tail heavy, I will switch to a brass bailey safety hub instead of a aluminum hub which should take her to just barely tail heavy like you would want... we'll see how it goes, I'm excited about this beautiful bird.
