I have a quick question, if I were to use a 2 stroke engine what is the best type of muffler setup? Since I see that the engine mount is at a 45 degree angle has anyone made there own holes to make the mount horizontal and use a pitts style muffler. Another qustion I have is could you use lusterkote on this model, I like the look of the all blue Hellcats and was wondering is anyone has done that.

Frisco-

I've got an OS .91FX in mine mounted horizontally with a Pitts muffler. Looks and works great. The exit hole for the muffler pipes is a little oversized and allows for good cooling. I would have preferred a 4 stroker but had the .91 just sitting there and --- you know the story. It's a lot of power but then I fly at 5-6,000 ft. elevation.

Can't help you on Lustrecoat.

Enjoy your baby. She'll be a great flyer.

Lusterkote should work OK. I've used it to clear over iron on film and it seems to work well. Just might want to rough the surface a little and possibly use primer over the white to help with a uniform finish. Also, use a tack cloth and alcohol to prep the surface before paint. Make sure the covering is good and tight also, although I have fixed loose spots with a heatgun after paint and it seems to not effect it.

BTW, lucky for you you're not in Cali. The tree huggers here have made it very hard to get decent paint and have forced Top Flite to reformulate it's Lustekote mixture twice in the last 2 years to comply with our ever changing laws.

Hi, I was just looking through the threads on the hellcat and ran across your pics. I have a new one that I havn't started on yet and would like to know how you done the flaps. I am new to building but I am looking at putting the G20 in it and a friend has one that has to land with a good bit of speed because of the weight. I think the flaps add realism to the plane and would really help with landing. The retractable tailwheel is nice also. I am ordering the century jets retracts for it and want this plane to look scale. If anyway possible give me some hints on how you did the flaps. Thank's

Lowery 1, I sent you an e-mail with some details in it. I don't think you need any addition lift to land this airplane because mine is really a floater but the flaps do help slow it down so that you can land it where you want to. Without the flaps I usually over shoot my landing point.

Thanks for the information. I really like the looks of your plane and will do what it takes to get that scale look. Maybe you can get me the pics of them. I have an older Gentleman at my club who loves to build and I am going to ask him to help me with it. I want to learn as much as I can about building so I dont have to depend on people to do things for me. Thank's again.

I looked at your profile and saw that you like the telemaster. That is a good airplane. Do you have some time on higher performance aircraft? The reason why I ask is I am an instructor at my club, (The Nappanee Fly'n Dutchmen in Indiana) and have seen a lot of pilots try to go from a trainer type to a warbird and it can get a little harry. I would suggest you have some low wing tail dragger time (like in a Stick) before you attempt the Hellcat. If you already have some time in type, sorry for the intrusion!

Hi John, yes I have flown a variety of planes. I was as my instructor said a quick learner. I have the h9 twist, h9 sopwith camel sig rascal 40, e-flite mini funtana, e-flite mini stick with 480 outrunner and I had the h9 p-51 pts but had a friend I had been teaching to fly and he wanted it more than I did. Yes the guys at the club have had me teaching a few people because I have picked up on the hobby that fast. They let me fly there planes anywhere from giant scale 3d to the warbirds they have. I picked up the h9 Hellcat from our last fly-in for $120.00 NIB and I figured since I dont really have the experience at building this will be my experimental plane. Knock on wood I have been flying for over a year now and haven't had a crash. I am glad that you asked that questiion, that 's what I am looking for. I want to do things the right way so i dont ever have the regrets of doing something to fast or the wrong way. Thank's and I appreciate any advice I can get as I am learning.

Hey CorsairJock

Very unlucky thing to happen to loose this bird. The cowl was the best I have seen in a photo.....Hell of a good job on it!!! Too bad !!!
Reminds me the loss of one H9 Mustang that I lost for the same reason...But I am sure that if you repair it will be a challenge to make it much better!!
So take some "poxy" and Cyano and get to work!!! We all are waiting of the new photos from the resurection!!

Stay well chap, your comments are helpfull for all R/C enthusiasts.
Cheers
Johnnie

Lowery 1 I took these pictures today of the flaps. I'm attaching some of My Bryan Taylor Hellcat flaps top show you the comparision. The top measurement is 1 and 1/2 inches and the bottom is 2 and 1/8 inches on the cord. The real flaps were cruved as on the BT but I just simplified them on the H-9.

Does anybody know what size the fuel tank is that come with the H9 HellCat? Looking for the "oz." capacity.

Very nice!!! The 100 is a great fit to the cowl. Congrats on your maiden, that is always a good feeling. It is on my wish list.

Yes, GREAT JOB on those FLAPS, Hellcat 1: looks to be somewhat simple, yet effective and close enough to scale looking for me. I will now plan on doing same to mine when I get around to making repairs (mine was 'shot down' by another transmitter, as you may recall).

Also, pretty good looking gear doors on it: are they scratch built? If so, care to explain your methods and materials used?

I need a fuselage, cowl, & tail group for mine. All the parts that I need will set me back about $165. I am considering just buying a whole new one, but I woudn't need the wing (mine survived well enough, and I already had a few spare parts), SO: is anybody in need of a wing kit? I could justify buying the whole plane if I could sell the complete wing kit (including retracts) for say $80 shipped. If anyone is interested, send me an e-mail (PLEASE, NOT a PM). Horizon would want about $130 for above, plus shipping.

CorsairJock, I used the gear doors that came with the kit. I notched the top and drilled a hole in them so that the inside collar would keep them from rotating. I then made the bulge out of three peices of 1/4 inch balsa, leaving a groove for the wire. I inset four peices of 1/8th ply for the screws in the balsa bulge. Then it's just a matter of getting the hole for the screws in the right place. I mono-coted the bulge but it would probably be better to paint them. I was in a hurry. I then could put the door on the inside of the wire, getting them closer to the wing when the gear is retracted. I'm up loading some pictures for you. Hope they will be self explanatory.

Hi Big Daddy-RCU

The prop was was hitting it. and and i was not aware of it untill i landed the plane. there was plenty of clearance from the prop to the cowl. in the manaul it said it should be 140mm from the fire wall i double checked it and it was right. But what we did find was when i put i new prop on because the other one got chewed up as you can see in the pictures. was the cowl was expanding from the prop wash when you gave it full Power on the ground.

But at full power it was not touching it when on the ground. but when i went back up it did it again. so i dont know what is Causing it.

I have cut a big hole at the bottom of the damaged on to let the air though and see if that works. i have got a new cowl on the way from the US.

If any body has had the same problem i would like to get some feedback.

Shafs,

I'm going for a Master Airscrew 15 x 7 3 blade for starters. Since YS says it will swing a 16 x 6 2 blader, this should be a good starting point. I even gave YS a call and they admitted that they really don't do much testing with 3 blade props since most guys use APC 2 blades for maximum performance. He did say to aim for about 9000 rpm since that's the sweet spot for power. I'll likely use a same size 2 blade for break in on the bench, then give the 3 blade a go. I may even try for a 16 incher with a shallow pitch of say 4 or 5 and experiment some.

I did a little investigation to see if I could find a simple chart for converting from 2 blade to 3 or 4 and found this handy chart on the Zinger site: [link=http://www.zingerpropeller.com/_2_blade_.htm]http://www.zingerpropeller.com/_2_blade_.htm[/link]

It basically says this:

The conversion for a three and four bladed propeller is a simple tasked if you know what two bladed propeller you use on a given Engine. For example, on a three bladed propeller you would drop the diameter and keep the pitch. On a four bladed, you would drop the diameter and the pitch. For instance if you had a two bladed 24-10 propeller and you wanted a three bladed you would use a 22-10 and so on.

Just go to the page and the chart is there just waiting to be printed and hung on the shop wall.
