Warbird aficionados..I apologize
When I started MY TF Sea Fury I was going to finish in a warbird scheme, that is until I saw a picture of Charlie Hillard's Lone Star Fury. In 1996 Charlie lost his life in a freak accident with this plane, this my my tribute to him. I still have to get the grafics on to make it look complete. I was planning on a maiden tomorrow but the weather calls for rain.

Where did you get the documentation on Charlie's plane? I hunted for a whole season before I gave up and finished my Sea fury as "Furias" (sorry, lost all my photos in a 'puter crash, so I can't post one. See it in MA a few months ago).
Anyhoo, GREAT JOB!

Hi Walt, I found an article in Sport Aviation, June 1996. A fellow club memeber has huge collection of old issues. THe article has a few photos and a great write up about Charlie. I did an internet search to see if I could find more pictures and I turned up nothing. It seems the plane was sold after the crash to become another famous Reno racer but the name escapes me now.

One of the cool things about taking a scale plane out is that there may be an interesting story behind the thing and it's pilot...all the better for great conversation at the field. The Fury looks great. Good luck with the maiden.

I too have a TF Sea Fury on the board and was considering finishing it as "Lone Star Fury". I had the pleasure of watching Charlie perform his debut airshow in the Fury at the Phoenix 500 air races and it was among the best warbird aerobatic performances I have seen. I remember looking for pictures of the airplane on the internet shortly after the accident and not having any luck at all, nothing. It made me wonder if the pics were removed from the net out of respect for Mr. Hillard and his family. I don't know, but it sure seems quite strange. I did find one good pic a year or two ago that I've got saved to disk somewhere, I'll post it if I can locate it. Here is what she looks like today:

"I didn't know Bert Baker did a P-39. Is that the 100 inch one Consolidated sells?"
Nope, 96" wingspan, with a 1 piece fuse. At first, I beleived to be a Consolidated.

rc-sport,
I will look into it but they may be too small for your plane. His plane was one of the old D.A.R.E kits and it was a .40 size plane. I think he may have gotten them from a guy in Sacramento who used to do a lot of the graphics for us scale warbird racers and I am not sure he is still around but I will look into it.

Hey guys,
I just popped into this forum cuz the 'Fury is a favorite warbird.
If any of you are still looking for pictures of Charlies Texas Fury, please try the Bob Banka website. He has pics of virtually every warbird seen in every scheme for the last 35 years or so.
I just ordered a Bearcat pack from him and did Miss America years ago. His Photo packs are WELL worth the bucks and you could atke the pics to any graphics shop and they can duplicate them for you.

Just FYI!!!

I did a poll on this about 2 years ago. It had 75 respondents or so. I am one of the 60% who believe a Warbird is still a Warbird even with civilian or Reno racer paint on it. Decorate it in a way that makes you happy. It is your hobby!
A tribute airplane that I have in the works is Gerry Beck's "Precious Metal". Many around me think it is an ugly scheme and that I shouldn't do it. But I find real interest in the paint scheme. Even more since Gerry lost his life in the roll-over crash up at Oshkosh 2 years ago. Leo
