None that I know about to move the carb to the rear, but you can get an aftermarket intake manifold that turns 90 degrees to get better clearance over the stock set up. However it would still not clear the cowl in a mustang I don't think. Beleive it is marketed by practical models in the uk.

Thanks. I think I'll try the DA 50 with the Keleo exhaust. Hope this thread keeps going...I haven't even started building yet!

I just got my P51 done today. It has a G62 installed with a bennet cup mount and a prop hub spacer. The only hacking was for the carb and the spark plug cap.

I turned the engine a little bit so the muffler had more room. Then I cut the bottom of the firewall to make a pocket so the muffler has some wear to go. I have a tig welder so I made my own pitts muffler. I`ll take a picture later tonight so you can see how I made it fit.

Hey Flyguy. Looks really good. What muffler are you using and how did you keep it in the cowl? I like the G62 for this plane but thought a side mount (Bennett type) or wrap around pitts would require significant cowl removal on the side/bottom. I can't really see the muffler in your pictures, how did you do it?

I did make the muffler from scratch. The header is one inch by one and a half inch rectangular tubing ,aluminum. I made it with that size so it would not be too restrictive. The front of the header had to be angled so it would clear the cowl.

Moki 210 with Kline regulator, Slim Line Pitts muffler...lots of power...loops as big as you want with excellent flat out speed.

RE: What engine did you put in your Top Flite giant P-51?
This Thread has been great for me, lot of insights and pictures of great installations. My dilema now is what will give me the best performance with the least amount of surgery?.
The DA-50 ................ $595.+ , with Keleo Exhausts $200.(5 h.p.) = @$800. Min. amount of cutting.
The Rev-52.................$549. + w/ Performance Exhaust $99. (5.7 h.p.) = @$650 also min. amount of cutting
The Zen G-62............. $424 + w/ prop hub,carb manifold, muffler (?h.p.) = @ $ ?, plus bottom and side cutting of cowl.?
Scalebirdman: could you please help me out with the G-62 stuff. Thanks.
I was hoping that RC34074 would have posted some new pictures of his finished install on the Revolution 52, which looked pretty sweet.
Well I think I can safely say that this choice is a lot like my pre-flight checklist. I've got it down to thinking about only 900 things before I take the active. YIKES!!!!

Ed, thanks for the update. Seems like minimum cowl-lect-amy for the Rev 52. The fan and shroud, are they options, right? just like the slim muffler you've choosen. Did you want to cut that much from the cowl for heat-venting purposes? Thanks. Mikel-T

RE: What engine did you put in your Top Flite giant P-51?
The fan and shroud are options from revolution. They recommend them to keep the engine cooler when closely cowled in. I think anyone could make the shroud but its easier to buy theirs. however, it is a fairly close fit to the fan so you need to be careful to mount the cowl accurately or the fan might chew up the shroud a bit.
the muffler is also an option from revolution. it is a decent fit but one corner does stick out a bit in the area you mention. I suppose you could have the muffler modified, or maybe I messed up the location of the engine a bit- but its within 1/16 inch of the plans location. I likely would have made some exit area there anyway- it just a little bigger than I would have liked to make it. Its a pretty nice setup- not as clean as the keleo creations exhaust but I was too cheap to buy that, and too lazy to remake the front of the plane to fit the keleo exhausts. Also I've heard the keleo exhaust is a bit loud and my field has some concerns over noise so I didn't want to add to those concerns.

Hey Guys, Just to let you know FlyGuy lost his new Mustang a couple of weekends ago.
He was flying with me and another mustang at a fly-in. We where burning up the skies with three Stang/G-62/ racing prop combos. When about 5 minutes in the flight, all three of us came it to the down wind turn to make a low burn pass and Flyguy got in a high speed stall.
The plane was damaged beyond repair.[]
However don't fill to bad he has all ready started on #2

Sorry to hear about his loss. I hate picking up sticks. BTW how does one recover from a high-speed stall?...if your quick enough that is...

Well, Last weekend the first mustang in the "Trio" picture crashed. It just rolled over on its back and dove staight in. That plane had over 500 flights on it.
That just leaves mine. The Squadron is dwendling down. I'm almost scared to fly now[]

RE: What engine did you put in your Top Flite giant P-51?
I'm in the process of building the TF Mustang and chose the DL 50 with a pitts muffler from JTec. I used 1/4" peices of light ply and glued them together then coated with epoxy. Looks absolutely beautiful and the muffler fits like a glove! I am going to purchase the TF P-47 next and plan on using the DL 50 as well.
A couple items of note on the Mustang:
1.) On the Rudder there is a Peice that sticks out and is supposed to fit nicely in a groove on the vertical stab...On my kit that peice was a good 1/4" too thick causing the rudder to stick up at the top, over the vertical stab (i used a band saw to cut it down, then recovered the peice with some left over covering).
2.)when intalling JR servos into the wings, for both the flaps and ailerons, i had to sand / carve out a section on the wing rib in order for the door to fit (Apparently JR servos were not intended to be used)
3.)The wing joiner was too thick in the middle and needed to be sanded down substantially before the wing halves could be glued together. (noted as an addendum to the manual)
4.)TF should not have drilled holes in the firewall of this airplane, not everyone is going to use the us41, it is considered by most to be underpowered for this particular plane.
5.)The pre-cut hole for the horizontal stab was way too big, no biggy..pun intended...the builder can easily use the tail gear hole for easy access and glueing. ABSOLUTELY NO NEED TO COVER IT IN PLASTIC WRAP...OVERKILL)
6.)MONOKOTE? WHY?
7.) FULLY FUNCTIONAL SCALE GEAR DOORS, PROVIDED BY TF, WOULD BE AWSOME...Im going to have to figure a way to build my own
I'm sure there will be more snags, as is typical with ALL ARF's... You would think that SOME of these types of things are reported to the manufacturer...and then fixed...YAH RIGHT!
All in all, the Mustang is a BEAUTIFUL BIRD and i cannot wait to fly it!
