Northern Alliances Warbird event 2006 (picture thread)
Just got home from a great event at a club that I belong to down in Owatonna MN. It was the second annual warbird gathering held here. Last count was somewhere around 60 pilots and 100 plus warbirds. The SMMAC club did a great job putting this event on and everyone had a great weekend. Thanks to Tim and Karen (own the land where the field is located), Phil, Chris and the rest of the Owatonna "Locals" that made everything run so smoothly. Second thank you go's to all the out of towners that traveled here to attend the event. Our warbird friends from Denver made the trip for the first time this year along with the regular contingent from Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois and elsewhere. We even had a few guys come down from Canada.
Please add to the pictures as I really didn't get a lot of good shots. Most of my pics were from Friday.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words........hats off to Jeff and Merlyn.
These guys are both class acts and good friends.
I predict next year there will be a reuinion of sorts. Another 13 foot Corsair against another 12 foot KI-100.

It was one awesome fly-in, the drive back Sunday morning took Jeff E and I, 11 hours door to door from the flying field to Winnipeg, worth every minute.
Great hosts, great pilots, great planes, great food, great campfire - many thanks to all that worked so hard at the field, cooking, impound, etc., all weekend - we had the easy part, just show up and fly.
Hope to see ya in 2007.

It looks like an excellent event. So were there any Nebraska pilots out there this year? I will make sure if at all possible that I bring a contingent of Corn Huskers out there next yr. So what is the story of the Corsair and the Ki-100?

What a phenomenal event !
Most fun I've had at any meet EVER.
When Tim and Karen say "all you can eat" ribs and sweet corn, they mean the first plate full. Saturday's meal alone was worth the price of admission.
Gorgeous field, great set-up and planning, lots of great folks who just like to fly warbirds.
Positioned as it is at the "CrossRoads of the Midwest," with a great turnout in only its second year, I predict this will get really big, really soon!
Wingtip to wingtip more than 700 ft of warbirds! I can't wait to get the DVD.
Thanks to all,
mt

From me, and on behalf of the S.M.M.A.C. club, thank you to all who came to make the event a class act. We hope to see you all and more in 2007. Wheels up!
Ram-bro: As for the Corsair and Ki-100, Merlyn and I were doing some really nice formation flying. While coming out of a turn, our planes tangled. It was very fitting for a Corsair to tangle with something from the Empire of Japan. Both planes fought each other, sawing each apart with propellers and battling wingtips. They were locked together, seperating only 20 feet from the ground, where they both augured in 15 feet apart. Both were a total loss, including the engines. While it was sad to see them both go, it was one of the most spectacular mid-airs you can ever hope to see. It was just a circumstance of what can happen when you are having fun doing what we RC'ers do.

Jeff -
You were the epitome of class. As a newcomer to this hobby, I was amazed to see the way you and Merlyn reacted to what happened. This was the first RC event I have ever been to and found some amazing airplanes and some even more amazing people. Everyone was eager to answer my questions about their planes, building techniques, etc. I can't wait until next year and was already working on my "warbird" to fly at the event.
Thanks to Ken and smurfjet for the pics...

Thanks to all the great guys at Owatonna. I don't think it can get better than this. The boys from Madison Wi. will be there next year for sure. Who knows what Tim Johnson will come up with next? I can't wait to see. Chuck Backman

Hey Dave: We did not make the Colorado trip but these pics sure make it hard not to go to MN next year - Looks to be a reasonable drive from Oklahoma to MN. I have already started talking to the guys - great looking event, planes and oustanding field. I assume it is cooler in Aug at MN compared to 105 here in Okie land - that in it's self would make the trip worthwhile.
Did you do anything with the Spitfire ??

Very nice pictures indeed! Many thanks for sharing them!
In post N° 2 there's a pic with a white coloured MiG-3 lined up - Does anyone know something more about that plane?? Besides the multis I am really interested in RARE warbirds, and the MiG-3 is one of them !
regards
Chris

Dear All
What can you say, we have had some good warbird/jet events at RAF Coltishall England.
But nothing on the scale of this. Great Stuff.
You American's don't do things by halves.
Congratulations on what looked to be a fantastic event.
Regards Phil G.

Chris (multimaniac), that is a MiG-3 built from Roamin' Research plans. They advertise in High-Flight. I had one years ago at 26 pounds with a 4.2. If flew great. The one pictured here is 32 pounds and powered with a 3W80 in-line twing and Barton retracts. I have always liked the lines of the MiG-3. And, like you, I like the obscure planes.

MULTIMANIAC:
I don't know who owns the MiG, but I'm pretty sure I overheard him offering it for sale at the meet. He coulda been joking, but if you're really interested, it might be worth your time to investigate.

Hi Jeff (F4U5) and kram-RCU,
Many thanks for the information. The roamin' research plan seems to be very nice, I am really thinking about that one as a future project...! For the moment I think I don't want to buy the MiG, although it is a very interesting plane. I do like building first and then fly a plane I I know from the first former to finish! - for me that's the big challenge in model aeronautics [8D] !
regards
Chris

Hey Dick,
Good to hear from you. I was waiting to get a tap on the shoulder from you but we'll have to wait to meet until next summer. You should definitely put this event on the calender. Weather was in the mid 80's (still a little humid) but not anywhere near your 100 plus that you guys have in Okie land. Bring the Lancaster out if you have it ready. I know your group has a bunch of beautiful warbirds. We'd love to see them up here in MN.
You guys should still try to make the Denver event as well. We have that one on the "must attend" list and don't miss it. The Spitfire is with Jeff Q, however he is talking of replacing the big Corsair with a 13 foot Spitfire so I'm trying to get it back
Ken - thanks for posting the pictures. I guess I neglected to actually meet you this year. I knew you were down there and just never sought you out. We'll have to meet up next year as well......
I know there was a bunch of guys taking pictures on Saturday. Please add pictures, or anything that you as a pilot would like to see changed or run differently for next year. I've spoken to Phil and they already have some ideas that will improve how the flight-line is run. IE, better communication with walkie talkies etc. Please let us know how the event can be improved upon for next year.
Dave

Hi Dave,
I intended to meet more flyers too, but the event was busy, I got played out and did less visiting than planned, sorry I missed you too, meanhile we can stay in touch via email and on the web.
The event was great - I have no snags or complaints but maybe I can offer a few ideas that may help which I shall do in a pm to you (only 5 hours left to work today and then I'm off to another fly-in)
I found the event had an Oshkosh Airventure feel to it and since I love going Oshkosh, I felt right at home at Owatonna with the flying field being out in the corn / bean fields - the greeness of the country - the fresh air, peace and quiet in the evenings, friendly folks, it was just wonderful, next year I'm coming earlier and staying longer.

I just wanted to say thanks to the gang at SMAAC who put on an excellent weekend and I'll be back again next year. For me this will be a must attend event every year. I have never met a bunch of nicer people who made you feel right at home.
Let me offer my regrets to Jeff and Merlyn on the demise of their respective birds. I got a quick shot of them just after they tangled and are headed for terra firma. Jeff and Merlyn I hope you don't mind if I share it here with the group.

The Owatonna Club sure had a well run event. I don't have a warbird, but I sure do enjoy watching them. I don't get to see a lot of bigger airplanes, and the world of gas has sure opened my eyes. Also, kenair was camped next to us. They are some of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet, as is usually the case anytime a bunch of r/c'ers get together. The weekend sure flew by and it was such a fun and satisfying experience, it was almost tough to leave. It was that good of an event. I did get some great photo's and a fellow club member did get some good video, and also, unfortunately, of the black widow that went down on Sat.
Great event! As the word continues to spread, it will become a premiere event in this area of the country. Of that I have no doubt.

I just heard that the field has been improved from last year? X-wind runway and some other things? It was a beautiful field last year.....it's even better now?????
