Default ME 109-Z

Here are a couple pic's of a plane that I am building for someone. I don't think it has been done in 1/4 scale before. It will have about 140" wing span when its done .......

This plane was actually built by the Germans and was at least taxi tested. Some say it did fly once. The day before the Official flights the Americans bombed the test facility, damaging the prototype, and the project was dropped.

Ty:

What brand are those 1:4 scale fibreglass Me 109 fuselages?. I agree with "Drunkenbrushman" that it will be an interesting thread to follow.

Best luck with the building.

They are American Eagle Fuses. The fit right up to the Meister wing without any changes. I was able to put 2 dowels in the fuse/wing by cutting the spinner area open. I placed a 1/4" former at the wing tongue area. I then figured where I wanted the holes. I drilled the holes in the fromer from the outside. I then mounted the wing to the fuse and reached in the front and drilled throught the holes into the leading edge of the wing.....

The fuses are reasonable in price. I think about $225 each....they come with the canopy, exhaust and supercharger...

I tried to email AE and never got an answer. I know the hurricane put them out of business for a while. Are they up and running now? Thanks Rich I am interested in their 109 also.

Nice project. That make the ground handeling a bit better

Someone should get a P-82 (2 P-51s) together to give this airframe a rival.

There are some guys with p-82s out there. Wing Manufacturing even has a kit for them but I think that is a lot smaller, like a 40 size. It would be nice to see a big p-82 model though. The ME 109-Z is a really unique subject and I'm looking forward to seeing this thing get built.

I've not seen the 109Z in 1/4 scale before, but we have a kit in 1/6th. Loads of fun trying to keep track of which fuse was the left or right during the build. Keep an eye on nose-heaviness - there's a bunch of equipment forward of the cg when finished. Looking forward to seeing progress on yours!

Here are a couple of pic's of the horizontal in place. The American Eagle fuse has a scribed location for the horizontal. It fits dead in place. everything appears to be right on. I traced off the outline of of the horizontal I built and traced it over the centerline of the scribed horizontal and then cut it out. I only cut the inboard side out. I iam trying to figure out how I am going to hold it in place.

Are you planning on permanently mounting the center wing section? We made the wing one piece, removable fuses, and bolted the horizontal to each fuse with nylon bolts and 1/4 blind nuts buried in the stab ends. I designed in a ply plate in the center of each fuse to use as a stab mount. The stab ends slide into each fuse side against the ply plate and are bolted together that way, with covers for the bolt holes.

I learned from my OV-10 experience that making the center wing/fuse/stab assembly permanent/one-piece made storage and transport a big headache, though field assembly was a breeze.

Mark,
The 109-Z will come apart into 6 pieces. I have to ship this from NC to CA when I am finished.

The gentleman I am building it for does want to transport it on it gear. So most of the time he will just remove the out board wings and they attach at the fuse.
What I am working on is the inside of the vertical right now. I like the way my KMP OV-10 hold it horizontal on but I fugured I would run into trouble that way, Maybe. I'll work it out in the next day or so and post the pic's.

Thanks Ty

Well here is my fix for the horizontal. I ended up having to make a piece out of balsa. More or less like a wing saddle. It had to be airfoil shape to go into the vertical and also airfoil shape to accept the horizontal. Once I got my shape I glued it in place and the horizontal sat in there great. When I build the horizontal I left a 3/8" gap on each end. I then took a 1/4 balsa and shapped so it would have airfoil shape on one side and on the other I placed an 1/8" ply plate. I did this to each side. It then had a good snug fit. I The drilled through the outside of the vertical into the horizontal and tapped it for 1/4-20. The horizontal will be secured with nylon bolts.

TY How close to scale are the AE fuselages? I would like to build a 109 about that size with the Meister wing and tail feathers. This is a neat project your doing. Thanks Rich

Well,
The fuses are fine. They have a more rounded bottom than what you can do with the Meister built up one but the top radius behind the canopy should have been more rounded. There canopy area does not flow just right.
But then again If you are going to build a Mesiter 109 you are not going for dead scale anyway. There would be alot of changes to be made even to the Meister to make it dead on. For the time and money the AE fuse is the way to go. For the $225 I got the fuse, canopy, exhaust stacks and supercharger intake. I could build this plane for less than a full kit cost by buying this fuse and cutting the ribs...The glass work is good. I have no complaints there. I have not primed them to see about pin holes.

Well, Its been a long toime since I posted on this thread. I could never find the gentleman that I was building this plane for. I have now stored this plane for about a year and a half. I have all my current projects finished and I hate to see a good project go to waist. Especially such a unique one. So I pulled it all out of storage and plan on finishing it.
I'll post pic's as I go...

I agree Ty. I have one other avenue to try tomorrow
actually. I will shoot you an email or PM with what I
find.

I hope, this doesnt mean the worse case scenario here
with Frank. I hope he just moved on, and doesnt want
anything to do with RC, rather than something tragic
happened?
