Default RE: H9 Spitfire Build

A 1/7 scale pilot would work good. Here's a little chart I made up for reference to a full size Spit for just such a purpose.

I am planning a .91 OS 4-stroke for power in mine as well. If you can find them, the TopFlite Cockpit kit and pilot for their Gold Edition Spitfire are the perfect size for this plane.

Also check out [link=http://www.acesofiron.com/page/AOIW2P5117.htm]Acesofiron.com[/link] . Their WWII US pilot, style 1 paints up nice as an RAF pilot. Saw one in a Vailly Hurricane and it really looked the part!

Wingspan Scale

442†= Full

147†= 1/3

111†= 1/4

88†= 1/5

74†= 1/6

63†= 1/7

55†= 1/8

49†= 1/9

Yo Hellcat716,

What brand spinner is that and did you paint it ?

If so, will it's paint hold up to an electric starter??
I think I've seen the same kind/brand on a KMP spit somewhere amongst these threads.

I hope it's cheaper than the Vortech or the Tru-Turn.

I'm hoping to maiden mine this weekend.

The spinner is off the World Models sixty size Spitfire. I did paint it and as long as you use a very soft cone it will hold up.

Hey Root!

Did you take pics during your build process?

Have you found anything wrong so far?

I'll be looking at getting one sometime next year as I have an OS 91FS that needs a home!

Nothing wrong, very good instructions - even better than the H9 P-47. All the parts are there - straight and true, the covering is great, construction includes 9 stringers and 9 or 10 formers, Cowl blocks are already glued to firewall. I want to get further along before I take pictures. You can look thru the pdf. manual here http://www.horizonhobby.com/ProdInfo..._60_Manual.pdf to see the build procedure.

Hey Hellcat716 - can you buy the World Models Spinner seperately? I tried to find out from their site and couldn't locate it.

Nice spinner no doubt. But why don't you try a DuBro spinner? I think its cheap easy to find and easy to paint..!

I agree, but unfortunately DuBro doesn't make a 3 1/2" spinner. In fact, I think the only manufacturer that has a plastic 3 1/2" is [link=http://www.mecoa.com/cbtatone/]CB Tatone[/link] . They come in Red, White, and Black.

I am using the Hangar 9 WWII British 1/7 scale pilot. Had to cut him dowm about 1/2" to fit. A couple problems I am having with the assembly are the cross hairs for the engine mounting on the firewall are incorrect. By using the existing lines, my engine was about 1/8" high and 1/8" off to the right causing the cowl not to be centered with the spinner. My elevator tips rub on the stabilizer, so I filled the existing joiner wire holes in the elevator and made new ones to get the correct spacing. I also used small pinned hinges for the flaps. They recommend hinge glue for ca type hinges on the flaps, but I have never heard of using hinge glue on ca hinges. I plan on finishing up the plane by this evening. Everything else seems to be going well.

Hellcat716,

Would you suggest that the new crosshairs for mounting the engine should be re-drawn at

1/8' lower and 1/8" to the left

in order to have the spinner centered in the cowel?

ps....... thanks for the heads up on the elevator joining / not joining issue
AND
what would be wrong about using CA on the flap hinges ?
are they afraid it'll make the flap stick to the underside of the wing?
Or if it's an apllication issue...I can apply the CA with one of those extension tubes for better access to the hinge joint.
Correct?

I just got mine yesterday, and flipped through the manual. The issue with CA on the flaps is that you only have access to applying CA to one side of the hinges since the flaps are split flaps and thus they point out that it would not create a good bond with CA only applied to one side and they could come out during flight.

I've never heard of hinge glue on CA hinges either

The quality of this ARF is superb. The covering is flawless.

Yes, On 2nd look, there's only access to one side of the flaps as far as the applied adhesive to be effective ......

so it looks as if the way around this is the Hellcat716 hinge approach or the hinge glue

(which an old timer friend heavily into RC builds says: it's is the same as "canopy" glue which is flexible and gives you time to correct the bonding surfaces"

in order to assure a confident bond of the flap and the underside surface of the wing "fillet".

Let's hear it for Hellcat716 with the "caiilllliones" to pursue the build and run into problems that need correction and decision making so that we the followers can learn from HIS mistakes

"Bravo" Hellcat716....hope your maiden flight is everything we all wish you!!

Sounds like you are almost done by Thursday-FRIDAY???

I suggest you install one blind nut with the engine on the existing lines then mount the cowl and you will see exactly which way and how much you need to move the mount to center the engine in the cowl. I have finished up everything except painting the pilot and mounting the canopy. I am going to screw the canopy on. As I was setting up the servo's today my transmitter quit working for some reason, so I sent it out for service today. Will be out for up to three weeks, so will not get to fly it this weekend. Will be listening to all the other flight reports. Good luck.

I am sure a small dab of epozy will work fine on those flap hinges. Thant is even if you do the flaps. Having built and flown 4 of the hanger 9 60 size planes there is no way this plane needs flaps. I think Hanger 9 just did them because people kept asking for them. Just an extra servo with no point in my opinion. Might look a little better I surpose

this spit looks nice, just finished a TF spitfire or I would have jumped on this one. you guys have to get em flying and some vids

Sorry to hear about your Tx on the fritz Hellcat 716--murphy's law got you.......I'll follow your advice as far as the 1 blind nut procedure.

Just finished the wing , ran into a snag thinking I could just Z bend the rods to the ailerons and SNAPPED the rod with the pliers so for those of you with that idea.....nix it. I'll be replacing the rods with 256 threaded ones and Sullivan clevises.

I forgot just how much glue the wing takes.... way more than I thought to get the ooze result for adhesion insurance.

I did follw bigplumbs advice and dabbed 1/3rd of the flap hinges with 5 minute epoxy. I did it to the flaps themselve - first on both sides then wiped the ooze with 90% alcohol and then to only the lower side of the CA hinge and the hole for the metal rod and the rod itself - then slipped the flap into the wing and wiped the ooze with the 90% alcohol again and then again as I flexed the flap into position. They ain't goin nowhere (I hope)

Here are a couple pictures of my finished wing and pilot. Note how well the retracts fit flush with the wing. Way to go Hangar 9. Awesome plane again for the price. Typical Hangar 9 quality.

Here is a little tip....

On my Hanger 9 P47 where I put the wheel spats on I found that the air pressure on them in flight caused one not to go up fully. This was because the retract wire was bending. To cure the problem I just bought a length of hollow brass tube and slid a length over the wire to strengthen it. I also glued it each end with epoxy so that I would not get and metal on metal interference

Pic below

My spit should be with me in 9 days

Just to let you all know when I balanced my plane it took about 3 1/2 ounces of lead in the tail for the CG to be correct at 5 1/4". I have a 1650Mah battery with the YS 91.

Very nice Hellcat 716. It looks very nice indeed. I notice that you have only one switch and therefore I assume you are only running one flight battery. I like to have a separate battery for the retracts and one for the other controls. If the retracts get bent slightly on takeoff or however and the retract servo stalls it will empty your battery very quickly and you could easily loose the plane. But a very nice model I hope to have mine ina week to start on
