Pilot scale to warbird size.........?
Somewhere in some thread, somebody posted a nice list of what scale pilot to put into what scale plane. i.e; .40 plane > 1/9 scale pilot.
Anyone know where this post is?

RE: Pilot scale to warbird size.........?
I agree, the size of the engine has little to do with the scale of the airplane. A .40 size model of a homebuilt could be 1/4 scale while a .40 size warbird might only be 1/9 scale. Even if you include only single engine warbirds the scale can differ by quite a bit. Better to divide the model's span into the span of the full size to arrive at a scale. For instance:
Full size Spitfire= 36 foot, 10 inch span
model Spitfire= 88 inch span
Convert full size span to inches, ie, 36x12+10= 442 inches
Now divide 442 inches by the model span of 88 inches. 442/88= 5.0227
The resulting scale is 1 to 5.0227, or just a shade under 1/5 scale.

True. Convert the wingspan of the full size plane into inches, if it isn't already. Divide the wingspan of the model, also in inches, by that. This is the scale of your model.
For example, if the full scale plane has a 30' wingspan, that equals 360". Let's say your model has an 88" wingspan. Dividing 88" by 360" gives you .24. This is close enough to .25 to call it 1/4 scale. So, you need a 1/4 scale pilot.
Common scales are:
1/7 = .14
1/6 = .17
1/5 = .20
1/4 = .25
1/3 = .33

RE: Pilot scale to warbird size.........?
Thanks for the tips but im getting 1/7 scale for both Kyosho 109E .40 with a 55" span and H9 Spitfire .60 with a 65" span. Can't be right. Perhaps I am not calculating correctly.
Real 109 wingspan 32.7ft ......392"/55"......... .14=1/7
Real Spitfire wingspan 36.8ft........441"/65".......... .14=1/7 (size recommended by Horizon)

Check out this link. It is pretty helpful to get a nice size pilot for any plane.

If your figures are correct, then that's what it is. Engine size is NOT important. Neither is what it says on the box. It's what it actually measures. What's the problem? Just buy 1/7-size accessories.
