revolution r50 engine info? where to buy?
Thinking about putting the r50 in my kmp spitfire. Can anyone give me info about the engine, your experience? Is it reliable? What is the word on the street and where does one purchase these. I tried the website, called the numbers listed for New york and canada - got nowhere. Not encouraging. Looks like a great engine, low/slim profile, long nose, 50cc! I think it would be perfect for the kmp spit. Plenty of power and a good weight for this tail heavy beast from what I read in the threads about having to add nose weight with other engine choices.
I figure that I could rob some space behind the firewall, (shrink the gas tank) and mount the carb through the fire wall, might even be able to make the scale intake duct functional if I can manage to find a means to port the exaust. Your collective thoughts? Cooling?

For an airplane designed for 120 4 stroke, I think a 50 cc gas engine would be a bit much don't you think. Spitfires are small planes with fairly large wings and don't require the kind of horsepower of some other birds of similar wingspan.

RE: revolution r50 engine info? where to buy?
To all: The flying weight is around 12-13 lbs and the wingspan is 72". I know my engine choice is a bit over powered. Primarily intrigued with the R50 for the aforementioned reasons - long shaft, narrow profile, rear carb and muffler. As an aside, my limited research on the spitfire indicates that the engines had a lot of go - requiring pilots to back off the throttle on take-off to prevent torque roll. I was hoping to run a scale 3 or 4 blade prop and still have plenty of power. kind of wish they made a smaller motor with an equally long shaft (snout). Will consider any other suggestions - really trying to find a gasser.
I was considering ryobi but think it might be too big - plus the conversions sound a bit iffy. Richard, thanks I will look at the roto as an option since avoiding useless nose weight is one of my main concerns. The only other option I could find was an evolution engine with front facing carb but the only one that looked like it would fit without serious cowl butchery was the small 1.6 and agin because of the short shaft I think I would still have to cut the cowl to show the head and spark plug - where as the r50 has a rear facing plug. I think I also found that the side exaust (even with a wraparound pitts is too snug in the narrow spit nose.
Also, I measured the the distance from fire wall to front of cowl to be around 6.5" - the r50 is 6.3" excluding the carb. The centerline of the prop shaft to the top of the head looks like about 4-5" beginning about 3 inches back from the thrust washer. At least at first glance the cowl of the kmp spitfire appears like it is roomie enough at that point. Granted I would have to throw away the motor mount and use a small aluminum or heat resistant spacer ring as a shim between the engine and the firewall. Of course I don't know if engine temperatures would be prohibitive. Maybe someone has a thought on that - it is called a firewall but I don't want it to become literal.
thanks.
Lastly, did I follow the KMP Spitfire thread correctly...did YT international say they are going composite and abandoning the current construction methods. Will the existing kits continue to be manufactured? When do they expect to begin shipping composites? If in fact they are?

I use the revolution 50 in a p-51 mustang. Make sure you order the cooling fan and shroud. As for power it hauls my 20 lb p-51 like a bat out of hell.

RE: revolution r50 engine info? where to buy?
David,
Thanks for responding. I'm sure it will be more than enough power for this spitfire project especially if your 20 lb plane goes like a bat.... From your experience with the engine do you think it can be mounted with the carb behind the firewall? What is the approximate diameter of the rear mounting area - or say the distance between the mounting holes? Do you have any pictures of the installation in your p51 that you could post?
I saw the cooling fan on the web site but not sure about the shroud. What does it look like? And also I was wondering about muffler options - what did you use?
Thanks Rick

The engine can be mounted with the carb sticking threw the firewall. the distance between the top mounting holes is 3 " and 2.5" on the bottom by 2 3/32" up and down.
I don't have any pictures with the cowl off. The muffler was custom built by LHS and is a straight pitts with little showing out the bottom of the cowl.
The shroud is a fiberglass tube that fits around the fan to
concentrate the air over the engine.

RE: revolution r50 engine info? where to buy?
Thanks again for the info David. Any problems or issues with this engine? Is cooling a problem? Few engines are sold with a fan and shroud optional - any particular reason? "LHS" stands for what? Pardon my ignorance but I'm probably going to need a custom exhaust if I go this route. Also with the engine mounted inverted is the carb facing up or down -does it matter? Can you also tell me how far the center line of the exaust port on the engine is from the center line of the engine and also the dimensions of the port? Demanding aren't I? Sorry...just wish there was an easier way to get the info. Seems like the end user has more knowledge than the distributors of rc stuff 99% of the time.
Lastly, can you tell me how you set up the ignition? I assume it is integral but don't really see anything visible on the web site. Separate battery I imagine. Voltage? How is fuel consumption?
Would like to see pics of your P-51 - even with the shroud on. What kit did you build from?
Rick

Rick,
I will try and get you some pictures you can PM me your email address. Issues: I haven't had any issues after I got it tuned. The reason for the fan was guys were installing the engine in the cowl and there wasn't sufficient air flow with the large spinner plus the engine head wasn't sticking out the bottom enough to receive cooling.
LHS means Local Hobby Shop.
The ignition is a separate unit that I mounted on the firewall, I use a 2 cell Lipo 7.2, 2100mah battery with regulator switch combo and can fly all weekend without charging.
My engine uses about an ounce per minute of fuel.
I have the TopFlite giant scale arf p-51.
I don't mind answering your questions thats what it's all about, helping each other.

RE: revolution r50 engine info? where to buy?
A guy at our field has one in a P-51 and he also had a cooling issue until he purchased the fan.
It seems to need a lot of airflow in order to stay cool. I'm not sure the Spitfire would be a good airframe because of that issue.

Also, I measured the the distance from fire wall to front of cowl to be around 6.5" - the r50 is 6.3" excluding the carb. The centerline of the prop shaft to the top of the head looks like about 4-5" beginning about 3 inches back from the thrust washer.
