Ask Kevin at Keleo if he can install the P-51 operational exhaust stacks for you. I have a set and I love them.. It is so cool when the 200TI in my plane starts up the smoke barks out the stacks!!

I downloaded the manual and it says the engine mount was set up for a Saito 1.80 and "If you plan on using another engine, such as the Saito 2.20, you may need to remove the blind nuts and drill new holes in the firewall for your particular engine." I bought the Evo 35GT and I hope I have the skill to install it.

san26141, captain ron said the Evo 35GT is way too big. You may want to measure.

Here's what I found on my new P-51:

The spinner has a 1/2" lip that sticks back towards the fuselage.

The manual says to place the engine prop drive washer 1/8" ahead of the fuselage. That will not work.

You will have to fabricate a pair of 1/2" plywood spacers between the mount and the firewall.

This is in addition to the spacers already in the kit.

Now the spinner will clear.

Here's mine with the engine running last weekend. 15 pounds 4 ounces dry, ready to fly.

Spektrum DX7, 2 batteries (one on receiver, one on just retract servos)

All I need now is a remote glow lighter, a pilot and some recent vintage glow fuel!

Unfortunately I do not have the plane yet...its gonna be a b-day present in Feb. I was looking at the specs on the Saito-220 and the Evo 35GT and the Evo is 9mm wider on the engine mounting flanges (outside-outside dimension) and shorter in height from top of cylinder to center of crankshaft by about 12mm. (Evo did not supply dimensions from crankshaft to bottom of crankcase.)

Does anyone have the spec.'s on the max. width and height of the firewall?

I hope that the extra ~1cm width doesn't cause mounting problems.

Thanks

Pettit, Good looking model you have there, what engine are you using? keep us posted on the first flight results. On another note, I noticed the interesting styro stand you use to support your model - what make is it and where did you get it?

I downloaded the manual and it says the engine mount was set up for a Saito 1.80 and "If you plan on using another engine, such as the Saito 2.20, you may need to remove the blind nuts and drill new holes in the firewall for your particular engine." I bought the Evo 35GT and I hope I have the skill to install it.
The Saito 220 fits as expected, with just the valve covers protruding outside of the cowl, as the Saito 100 does with the smaller H9 60 P-51.

I moved both the port side t-nuts, increasing the spacing to the starboard side t-nuts by ~3/16". Crank still comes out centered (to the 1/16").

Without the supplied spacers, and with the 220 slid all the way forward on the mount, the prop disk only protruded about 3/32" past the front of the cowl, a bit too close. So, I still used the supplied spacers between the engine mount and the firewall, and slid the engine placement back on the mount's open rails until I achieved the recommended spacing.

After careful examination of the supplied 5" spinner, I decided to dedicate that as the "static display" spinner, with the four scale blades, and will use a Dave Brown or Tru Turn 5" parabolic, finished with self-etching primer and matching yellow paint, for actual flight.

Included a few photos below...

Rip n Bank -

Thanks for the pic's. I don't understand why H9 would recommend the Evo 35 if it will not fit. Will have to return it and go with the 220.

Thanks

OK I think I've decided. Going to go with the fuji BT 32EI on mine. W/modified rubber mounts, it should come out length-wise real close to perfect. The only hitch I have is the mounts that the Fuji comes with are too wide to fit inside of the built up part of the fixed cowl. Does anyone have any bright ideas or experience on how to get past this. I know I can't see the forest for the trees, so lend me your chain saw. I'm planning on reinforcing and glassing the firewall but I don't want to cut much of the wood away. Help!

Spit:

The stand is the one that comes with the new Top Flite Cessna 310

I'm using a Saito 220 and the supplied spinner. I was thinking of getting a Tru-Turn, but I really have to use what's in the kit for an honest review.

Thanks Dick, do you know if these stands are available/sold seperately - they look like a great work stand for the shop.

OK I lied. I wanted the Fuji. I got the Evo 26GT. After a call from LHS to Fuji support, they (Fuji) decided that the engine just would not work without extensive rework of the front end. As disappointed as I was, They only confirmed my point. I'm not against rework, but with the heavier engine and more power, I'd hate to make a bad judgement call. The Evo will make a great power plant for it anyway. Dry fits up great. May post pics since I haven't seen the 26GT installed on this or previous thread. Let me know if you want to see it.

Here are pics of Evolution 26GT installed. Left off everything except the engine so you can see how much room there is. Will be using a pitts wrap around muffler. The stock holes in the firewall were just a smidge to close together, but since the Evo gassers fit up on rail like a glow, it was a piece of cake to modify. The cowl is obviously just sitting there, but the only cutting there will be to do is for the plug wire, and engine cooling holes (similar to the drilled holes underneath with panel lines drawn in. from an earlier post I saw) The nice thing about the carb on the Evo is that it sits right out front behind cooling slot under prop shaft. Hopefully the air won't cavitate too much there.

I'll try again. Don't know why they didn't go. Not hardly enough room for electronic ignition module and battery. When the muffler shows up I'll put more pics on. I'm thinking about putting ignition behind firewall above fuel tank.

A guy at my field has the Evo 26GT in a Great Planes Super Stearman 120 and it is was not impressive. Straight and level flight was slow and verticals only yielded a couple hundred feet at best. Obviously the bipe has more drag, but I was disappointed. I'm really torn about the power plant for the P-51.

I'm sitting here at work daydreaming about flying this plane....and I don't even have it yet! Work really gets in the way of the important things in life....(shhhhh don't tell the bossman I said that!)

Yeah - I´m dreaming about mine too - delayed - argh! Maybe a bit naïve but wouldn't it be kinda funky to convert one of the scale bombs to a camerapod?

Just a thought!

I'm becoming increasingly more convinced that I should opt for the Evo 35GT for this one, rather than the smaller 26GT. It's only fifty bucks difference in cost, and it seems to fit in the nose just fine.

Man, the box is huge! Can't wait to get home tonight to open it.

Hah! I hope starting a build thread doesn't mean you're expected to finish first! I'm moving pretty slow on this one...

While I've been mounting my Saito 220 and fiberglass reinforcing the firewall and wing anchor block, I've been reading thru the original H9 1.50 P-51 build thread. Wow, it's both long, and filled with quite a bit useful information. (BTW, I'm cutting and pasting what I consider the best of these wisdoms into a Word doc. Anyone wanting a copy of the soon-to-be-completed compilation just send me a PM and I'll send you a copy.)

In addition to lots of postings on motor and prop choices, MUCH of that thread focused on the original Mustang's weak landing gear, and the various aftermarket replacements recommended. Fortunately, this new Mustang appears to come with gear robust enough for the task!

However, a key concern began to come forward later in that build thread regarding the weakness of the gear rails. Apparently, they were made of soft wood that easily ripped out of the wing.

Examining the new Mustang's rails, they seem rugged enough, but since this is my first giant scale plane, I have no previous build experience on which to really base that assessment.

I'd be interested to hear what others on this thread think of this new P-51's rails, and especially, how they compare to the earlier 'Stang if someone has access to both.

And, if the concensus here is that they would benefit from reinforcing, what, exactly, would be the best way to do that?

I'm going to epoxy a piece of 5/8 " quarter stock under each rail. When the epoxy sets, I'll soak in some thin ca where ever it will go. Same with the firewall. Cut some pieces about an inch long, sand a bit of a curve into the outside edge and epoxy them in all around. I use a long stick with an exacto blade on the end to position the pieces. Its easier than getting in there with cloth and gooey sticky epoxy on a brush. Better do something about the wing mount too. Got a ST 2300 mounted, getting an inverted pitts from JTEC, which will exit the cowl a little on the port side. Got the elevator joiner in the back end connected to a flex rod running through one of the tubes already in place. This saved 1 servo and 2 heavy rods going to the back. Push - pull on the rudder next, using 2 of the existing tubes. This arrangement should save quite a bit of weight aft. Also mounted the throttle and elevator servos on the fuse sies up against the firewall. More weight forward than in the stock position.
