KMP / YT Warbirds - Retracts?
Guys
I have a KMP / YT Hurricane that came with the early retracts that I am looking to replace.
I know I am not the only one to have trouble with these. For anyone who has replaced the retracts in any of the KMP / YT warbirds -
What did you replace them with?
Did you have to do any mod's to fit them?
What weight did your model come out at?
Do you fly off grass or tarmac?
You will see from the pic's, I already have a set of Euro-Kit Oleos.
Any info appreciated.
Cheers

Hi Alan
We have discussed my problem before.
Unfortunately the Aussie distributer is still trying to flog us the first generation retracts [X(][>:][:@][:'(]
See - http://www.modelflight.com.au/esm.htm
They must think that no Aussie modellers get on the internet & communicate with the rest of the world. A distributer like this cannot help the sales or reputation of this product.
Alan, do you know a model number of the spring-air units that will do the job?
Thanks again for the help.
Cheers

Regarding KMP having gear in stock, I am sure they do not. Or at least I hope they do not. If they are in stock I am having a bad experience. I was promised a replacement on 9-26-06. Without getting too harsh, I still have not received the unit after a couple of follow up e-mails. So, I too am interested in possible replacements.

if yours are the generation 3, out of the newer kits, then the spring airs will not fit, sorry,
try KMP again they have a forum on their site now, would that get a speedier response?

Sportstar1:
I just flew mine for the first time this past weekend.
YS 1.40 for power. Plane came out at 14 lbs, with plenty of lead to get it to balance slightly forward of the CG indicated on instructions. Probably balances in the 98-103mm range. I used the stock retracts (don't know what "generation" they are, but they are soft aluminum with lots of play in all directions). I also upgraded to 3/16 titanium struts from Central Hobbies, in an effort to stiffen its legs.
Bottom line: if your plane comes out in this weight range (12-14 lbs) there's no way that the stock retracts will well. My plane wobbled from side-to-side on taxi (even with the very stiff titanium wires), and they nearly folded on landing (which was essentially greased).
I just ordered Robart 730RS retracts and 7/16 oleo struts. I've not heard much about the Robart spring-downs, so I guess I'll be experimenting with them on my own plane.
Overall this plane flies great, steady climb-out, two clicks of down trim, one click of right aileron, and it was grooving! Landed very slow with no tendancy to stall, porpoise or lose elevator authority (which tells me it's balanced properly). I'm looking forward to having some solid gear attached.
I'll let you know how the Robarts work out for me.
