Thanks Jim I bolted the weight behind the firewall. Since it's still winter here I will have time to rework it. I did fly this plane as is last fall and it flew well but less weigh is always good. Again good luck it does fly very well, Bill

With the DLE 55 having a rear mounted carborator...won't this make tuneing a big hassle/pain, haveing to take off the Cowl to access it when ever adjustments need to be made? I'll compare to the cowls measurements tonight.. Thanks for the DLE specs. just haven't seen anyone run a rear mounted on this bird yet in this thread. I guess onces the engine's tuned though... I'd only acces it onces in a while pre-flight.

Any other engine suggestions?

If you are looking for a power house of an engine and want a side mounted carb like must of us are using Brillelli is still making a few engines for those that want something American. Take a look at Brillelli customs and talk to Mark. He still has a new Brillelli 60 and I know it is a very strong engine. He specializes is custom engines and he might be able to put together a Brillelli 46GT. Here is his web site.

Thanks!

Hey guys, can anyone recommend a place to get stand offs. If I'm doing the math right, with the DLE55's 170mm length (this is the end of the stock standoff to the spiners backplate)... added onto the ~73mm deep motor box, and accounting for cowl depth, and the 5-7mm prop to cowl space. I am going to need stand offs of about 33-35mm.

170mm (engine with installed stock standoffs length)
+ 73mm (engine box)
= 243mm vs the cowls 203mm length. (DLE is to long with it's stock standoffs)

so 243-203= 40mm ... so the engine/standoff lengthneeds to be shortened 40mm for the spinners back plate to be flush with the cowl length.

Stock DLE 55 Standoffs= 68mm - 40mm + (5 to 7mmto account for neededspinner cowl space) = 33 to 35mm standoffs will be needed

Is my thinking correct here?

Thanks

At the hrdware store in with the nut and bolt section you can find spacers of various sizes. They work well. I had the same problem with a Fuji engine I had to take the engine box off and use homemade standoffs.

I had the same problem with my Brillelli 46GT. I did not use the engine box and I made a mounting block out of two 3/4" plywood pieces I had on hand. Here are a couple of pic's of the install. It just my help you with another option for mounting your DLE 55.

Bill,

Have you moved your weight to the forward side if the firewall yet? I was wondering how much weight you have been able to save since you have already moved all your servo's into the fuselage

Jim, I haven't yet been busy building a 1/4 scale Sopwith. I did however move the servos from the tail to the CG area and that save 1/2# I will move the weight from behind the firewall to a platform over the engine I think this will save a full LB. Keep you posted, Bill

Thanks for the pics Jstanton, so I don't have to use the engine box that comes with the kit. I wonder if I could just use the single square ply piece that also comes in the kit instead. Heres a pic of the piece i'm talking about posted in flying giants.

I used that piece and had to use another 3/4" piece of plywood to get the distance I needed for the prop hub. It will workout just fine. Just remember if you use a DL-55 you will also need about 2 lbs of lead in the nose so make sure you leave room to add it. Good Luck. I hope to maiden my Zero this coing Sunday if the weather holds

I did the maiden flight on Sinday afternoon. All I can say is this is one very nice flying War Bird. The take off was buestiful and the plane is very stable. The ESM retracts worked great and I am very glad I went with them I had a couple of issue in the flight. All of my batteries where mounted in the cowl and the reciever batteries came loss. I had them shrink wrap so they did not fall out they just hung under the cowl in flight, I also had the throllle arm come off of the carb. i guess I forgot to lock it down. I used the remount kill swict I had install and killed the engine and gilued down and landed in some tall grass at the end of our runway. One landing gear mount broke loss and that was all the damage. I have already repaired the mount and attached the batteries to the cowl again. This time they will not come loss. I plan the fly the Zero again this Tuesday. I got some video taken and I'll post it ASAP.

Hi everyone! After having this bird in a box for YEARS now I am FINALLY building her. I got my Retracts installed , went with Century Jet, and I have a DLE55 rear exhaust.

So I ended up cutting down my Motor box so I could keep my engine carb fully exposed and not have to deal with cutting standoffs. Now I am trying to line up my motor box onto the front of the zero's fuse BUT the fuse has no hash marks like I've seen in other build pics and I believe the build diagram says that there should be. !!! I do have hash marks on my motor box..just not the fuse? the box hash marks do not center around the small circle in the fuse correct?? or do they?

Can anyone perhaps send me measurements in reference to the small fuse hole center to create my own hash marks?? WHAT TO DO?

Glad to see this tread once again active. I am recovering my CMP Zero you the earlier 1941 model. I have the covering removed and recover with Sig Koverall. Just have to paint it now. As for the retracts here is what I have used.

https://hobbyking.com/en_us/all-meta...en_us_products.

These are very robust and work really well. I will take a pic once I get back out working on it again and post it here.

Hey there,

nice. Looking forward to your paint job!

those hk retracts must be great. I know lots of pilots using them and they all say the same...
never got them by myself.

the ones i use are surely a lot more stable and strong but also more expensive...

Yeah, nice vid.

Are you going to enlarge the wheel well area?
I think the wheels that come with the kit are way to small for this big airplane?
i would do this on mine and also mold the wheel houses like i did on my Spitfire. Looks much better, less dirt comes into the wing inside while start and landing and less turbulences while the gear is down...

I did enlarge the wheel area. Those wheels on the gear are 4.5" wheels. The ones that come it the kit are maybe 3" wheel if they are that big. I am also going to do what you did on your Spitfire. You did a very good job. The weather has turn cold here now so the building will continue but it may be a while before I can paint it.

Oh ok, thats good! 👌
thanks, was even not easy to bend the 1mm balsa in there, but i‘m happy with the result!

sure, the weather here in Germany is also not right to fly or do anything outside. Also all the model airfields are closed now because of corona 😐

so, back into the basement!
