I coated my wing with thinned out glazing compound today. Will sand it tomorrow and see what she looks like. I hope to have the first coat of primer on tomorrow night!

I am doing a do over on the ailerons. They didn't have enough travel up and down unless they were 3/16" back from the TE of the wing. Unacceptable. I want it nice and close. I am re-coating the area I had to sand for the travel problem and after the Z-Poxy dries and I sand it I'll start to paint again.

First coat of gray primer is on. I've spot filled a couple of small seams. Tomorrow night I'll get her sanded down again and another coat of primer.

Gibbs, thanks for the heads up on the ailerons. I'll watch for that when I do mine.

Okay, wing's painted with color. Need to touch up the details around the oil cooler intakes, but otherwise, she's as painted as she's going to get.

Tom,

It's looking better than mine! Nice job. I am still waiting for the exhaust header and soon I'll post a picture of it complete. I kinda put it on the back burner with the 1/4 scale to work on. I did re-do the ailerons and have the bottoms painted again. After the paint has a goog while to cure I'll tape off the bottom and paint the top. Sometime next week.

Thanks, but I think your nose just grew about six inches!! I have no where near the fine detail in her compared to yours!

I had sprayed a clear satin on the fuse. I've decided I didn't like it, so I sanded her down last night and I'm in the process of putting on one more color coat. I got the dark blue done last night and I'm REALLY happy with they way it looks. I'm also going to paint the underside of the elevator white instead of blue. (Now that I know which color is the correct one!!)

I was thinking of making her electric. But I keep looking at the battery weight and short duration. I think she's going to have to take the OS .91FS I picked up a couple of months ago.

I'm going electric with my current build, a TF P-51B. I'll delay buying batteries until the last moment to take advantage of any improvements in price and performance. If I were to buy today, I thing I would go with the Max Amps 8000mah 4S2P 20C packs at 725 grams. These are the highest capacity to weight ratio batteries I've found. I am going with an E-Flite 110 motor, and would use an 8S2P setup. The only issue is the price, the packs are $300 each.

Well it's time to say good-bye,

I enjoyed all the posts and became friends with some of you. Tessex keep going on that bird of yours and feel free to take off where I left off. That goes for anyone else also. I will let everyone know when I am ready to maiden her and how it goes. Hopefully well with a nice video of the flight. I still have to weigh it but I will try to fly it no matter what it weighs. After all it's just a model, RIGHT![X(] This is my F4U-1D Corsair assembled and almost ready for it's maiden flight. All thats left are a couple control horns and exhaust and throttle work. Here she is.

Gibbs, Your Corsair turned out really nice and I have enjoyed watching your build. Thank you for posting all of the pictures. This will be invaluable for anyone building this model in the future. Good luck on your 1/4 scale and be asured I'll be following along on that one too.

Gibbs,

Great looking bird!!!

I've decided I wasn't real happy with the color lines on mine, and really liked the dark blue. So, I've sanded her down and going with the all dark blue. Figure I'll finish her out like the photo on the box. Will post more photos when I get her back in color.

Gibbs,

I know it was a challange to stay on track with the project at times, but you've ended up with a great looking bird. I'm sure that a lot of the struggles you had with it will translate to having an easier, more enjoyable time with your big bird. I hope all goes well with your maiden, and look forward to hearing the results and also following future builds.

Tom,

She sure is BLUE. I like it and it looks nice and smooth. Very nice job. Keep up the good work. I only wish you would of detailed it more. I know I'm a NUT but you would of really been happy when it was done, not to say you shouldn't be now. Great looking Corsair. Well back to the Big Bird.[&:]

More progress. I haven't actually glued the flaps in, but the hinges are glued into the flaps, and the connecting wires are in place.

Tom,

I can't tell if your canopy is glued on or not. If not what are you doing with the cockpit? The plane looks great.

The canopy is just setting in place. I have the cockpit to install, still. Haven't figured out what, or if, I'm going to do for the pilot yet. I have a Capt. America which is about the right size. I kind of like the Capt. America because, if I recall correctly, he's about the right time frame for a WWII fighter. Although I think for the weight, she's liable to go the RPV route.

She's going to have quite a few more of the decals put on her, I just need to sit down and figure out where they're going.

Thanks!

Thanks! I know I'll be happy with it. Especially after having painted it!!

I got the flaps glued in tonight. They look pretty good. The certainly could look better, but they're good enough. And, they'll be functional!

I'm headed out of town for the weekend, but when I get back, I start on the ailerons. Compared to those flaps, they should be simple. Then all the bits and pieces will be done and all I'll have to do is put it all together. I'm really getting curious what the final weight is going to turn out to be, too.

The club is having a Maiden Day on 11 May. That gives me about four weeks to get her put together, and the engine run in.

Greetings,

Barry, has any video of your corsair been made or posted yet?

Also I am considering using the cockpit form http://zollnermodels.com/ but they do not have contact info on their site. Can you, or anyone talk about the Corsair cockpit they make or get me in touch with them? http://zollnermodels.com/TF%20Cockpit%20Inst.htm

Thanks,
Christopher

Chris,

I used the Top Flite cockpit and was more than satisfied with it for that size plane. I think you may be able to get a real scale looking cockpit from Dynamic Balsa. Brian is making mine for my 1/4 scale Corsair. I still have some small details to work on before I maiden mine so it may be awhile before there is a video.
