RE: New ARF - Martin Mauler
I got one too! it is pretty good for an ARF. the outline seems to be fairly close to scale. except the horizontal tail. wow it is way bigger than scale. OK the retracts, the picture on the box shows the strut covers on the inside of the struts. now how is that supposed to work? fixed gear strut covers. retracts just wire. thats just like an ARF.[:@] for me this was just going to be a quck project to get something to fly while I try to finish some of my projects. well, I cant help it! I have to modify it to be more scale. just a few things or I will have another unfinished project cloging the bench.

RE: New ARF - Martin Mauler
The real Mauler had rotating retracts and the gear doors were on the inside. I had Rhom Air rotaing retracts on the Mauler I built (see eariler post), but it was quite a bit larger. Great flying plane though.

RE: New ARF - Martin Mauler
That Mauler was nice! I remember seeing it in the mags. I still have not found any 3-views of the AM-1. info on the net is a little spars. 90 deg. rotaters is one of my mods. I can't live with the crazy set up that it comes out of the box with.

I've got several different 3 views. None of them are what I would term excellent. The one I used for documetation was the best and it had very little detail. I can probably scan them and email them to anyone that would be interested. Sam

This pic shows a Mauler that is in bad shape. but it shows the general profile of the fuse, landing gear placement, spinner and prop. and the deck angle.

I could be wrong, but I did not think that the elevator would extend back past the rudder. so I cut it down about 1/4". the OS .52 fs fits completly in the cowl, as does the exaust system. starting on the gear now. Robart 615's.

Here are 3 3 views. The one with the least detail is the most accurate as to outline. the one with the detail has too long a canopy and on the other the canopy isn't tall enough.
I've tried this 3 times now. hope it works this time. sam

RE: New ARF - Martin Mauler
Thanks for posting the 3-views. Scale Masters here I come Ha! the quality of the Flyboy models Mauler is very good. all the parts are laser cut and inter lock so that if that cheap ARF hot glue does not get to all the joints it will still have structural integrity. the glass cowl seems to be pretty good and the heat shrink covering seems to be OK. I have had to reshrink it a few times now and have not had it in the sun yet.
There are some wierd design points, the engine mount structure and engine compartment are open to the inside of the fuselage, so oil may get all over your radio componets. I closed this off with some balsa sheet.
The gear is funny. as a scale guy the way the gear is, not good. I almost did not get it because of the gear. I'll bet that almost everyone who completes this ARF will have just wire struts, no covers and those cheap toy looking wheels.
This model does seem to have a fairly close scale outline, so it is a great one to modify.
Its a little work, but I am still trying to complete my gear modification. the mount plates are in. I tried to get just enough glue on them but not too much, if I have a really bad landing, I just want the plates to brake off and not the whole wing!

RE: New ARF - Martin Mauler
I don't mean to complain about this plane so much, but can't the ARF manufacturers at least get the scale stuff right? most ARF's are scale models of the "real" plane. so it seems that the info to get it right is available.
well anyway, I am starting to really like this thing. the gear is done. since I cut the bottom spar I had to add a new one, as can be seen in the first pic.
the next pic shows a balsa mock up of the landing gear plate that was used to cut the real thing in 1/4" ply. that was epoxyed in between the ribs.
next pic shows it all just about done. the Monokote that I had does not quite match but its on the the underside of the wing so it won't be seen much. yes it's all wrinkely, I'll try to fix that.

I'm really enjoying watching your build up of the plane.
As for scale outline, I think most mfg's deviate a bit to allow the model to have better flight handling. I have read that most models with a 100% true scale outline fly rather harshly.

Yes that is fine. but the extra frame on the canopy? the elevator extending back past the rudder? the gear working like P-51, when it should work like Corsair? well those things are not that hard to fix. this plane will be a Basin flyer. and it will be on display at the Prado Scale fun fly this weekend, even though it is not done yet.

RE: New ARF - Martin Mauler
The landing gear structure is done! here are two pics of the actual Mauler's gear, and two of mine. I decided to not to make the smaller front doors. thanks to Robart's fine products- 3 1/4" straight tread wheels. and 615 rotating retracts.
next the outer wing panels. will show engine details later.

RE: New ARF - Martin Mauler
Brought the Mauler out to the Scale fun fly at prado this weekend. I overheard people people talking about it and not knowing what it was. I proceded to tell them that it was a Martin AM-1 Mauler, conceived to replace the TBF Avenger and SB2C Helldiver. first flown in 1944. entered service with the Navy in 1948 with 151 built. problems with bouncing on carrier landings and high maintenence caused its retirement to the Navy Reseve in 1950. powered with a P&W R-4360 just replacing the plugs took three days. the reserve flew them on land only. pilots said it "flew like a truck". it had the same span as the Skyraider but was a bigger heavier plane and could carry a bigger load.
Here are some pics I took of the uncompleted model. still more work to do-

I have the outer wing panels glued on now. the manufacturer wants you to mount the aileron servos on the surface. I do not like that method and mounted them on there side, just like the Kyosho and VQ ARF's. it was a bit of work though, but worth it for scale looks.

RE: New ARF - Martin Mauler
The engine compartment is done. I chose to use the OS.52 FS because it fits totally in the cowl. this is an attack bomber, not a fighter, so that should be enough power. the plane is very light, maybe about 7 pounds, I'll see. the exaust fits completely in the cowl too. I had to seal the engine mount box from the engine compartment because it was open. a hatch allows access to the tank. I hope the engine will run ok with this exaust set up.

RE: New ARF - Martin Mauler
My tools are not the best, but I start by mounting the strut in a vise. then filing a little X where I want the hole. that gives a place for the drill to start. then drill slowly with a sharp bit. when I was mounting my Robostruts the lenght had to be short and I cut into where the spring is and it sprung out. that piece that holds the spring on the top could still be put back so I drilled through that and taped it. it has less travel now so I will have to land better. I have had trouble with Robostruts falling out after take off[]. so more drastic measuers will be used when it comes time to fly. like a little JB Weld, or CA, or bigger set screws than what comes with the struts.
