Default CMP P51 Mustang -50

[link=http://www.raidentech.com/cmppufi50fia.html]CMP P51 53"Wingspan at RaidenTech[/link]

Anyone flying this plane ? Most of my warbirds are 70" to 80" wingspans except for a Midwest ME109 and a GP P38. But I needed a smaller scale bird to throw in the car or take to an out of town field where smaller planes are more welcome than large.
Putting a Saito.72 in it for power with SpringAir retracts and offset struts. Futaba 3010s , after market control horns, linkages and CF push rods. Will balance CG to my own specs and do the usual beefing up on everything. Plus move the tailwheel to it's proper location. Just got a couple of questions........

How do these little planes fly compared to the larger CMPs ?
And will the .72 be enough weight up front to counter adding retractable tailwheel ?

Here is my Mustang project.. http://www.rcuniverse.se/viewtopic.php?t=112
I´m gonna run a .72 just like you & i´m working wtih the retracs right now. As you can see I removed the original cover & recovered the wing/tail with Oratex, then drew some panellines and added shadows with my airbrush..

Still a lot of work to do!

Nice work !! Looks like the strut line from retract to wheel well will be a tough one using the [link=http://www.retracts.com/Retrax_700.htm]SpringAir 704 series retracts and 3/8" offset struts.[/link]
Wonder how that's gonna work out ?

Ok,,, I went to the Swedish site again and saw which struts your using. The 3/16" wire fit nicely. Looks like I'll have to rebuild my rail allignment to make the fit using oleos.

I´f youre going to use olelegs youre gonna have to find a pair of really short ones! Pneumatic retracts will probably be too heay.. in my opinion. Thats why i´m using mech retracts.

Hi

I use it as a warbird warm up plane before flying my really good stuff. The belly scoop is from the P-51H, ugly but a version of the P-51. I'm going to make the "D" scoop for my other CMP-51. I also have the big brother of this smae model, just as nice if not better.

I have this model. One flying and one in box as a backup. (good value) I'm Flying it with a Magnum .52. It has enough power to fly it well, not super fast. Mechanical retracts, tail wheel at end of tail and not in scale position. I had to add nose weight.

The model if properly CGed it is very forgiving, good ground handeling easy lift off pretty slow landings.

A few things to note. On the wing, my LG mounts were glued to balsa ribs with ply doublers that stopper at the spar. They need to be reinforced with Ca since the do not use good quality glue ( on mine anyway) and they do not extend past the spar for additional support.

Also note the wing webbing, the grain should be verticle. Double up with verticle 1/16" balsa if needed.

Scalecraft,,, Colsson.....

After a little thought and remembering how all the nice scale add-ons added weight to my giant scale birds. I might just have to go with mech/wire retracts and save my good stuff for a bigger plane. Got a box full of mech gear so I'm sure I'll make it work.
Will reinforce everything with CA and Gorrilla glue.

I´m sure youre making the right choice! I have hundreds of "scale ideas" for my Mustang, but i know it will be too heavy when its time for the maiden... So, lets save the goodies for our bigger projects!

Update on this for those buying one of the several smaller sized P-51s whether it be CMP, Nitro Models or other. SpringAir makes a lightweight, solid pneumatic retract for 3/16" wire that will fit these plane's short , angled layouts. It's the 116 Series. As always from S-A,,, it comes with everything needed for assembly except a micro retract for the air valve.

On another note. I always enjoy talking with Bill from SpringAir. He and his wife are great folks.

CAUTION!!! I just remembered, my spinner backplate let go of the spinner at rev-up. I turned an aluminum backplate for the original spinner and it works fine now.

I can't run a plastic spinner anyway with a 4stroke. I have some scale alum spinners . Do you remember which size the spinner is ?

Question for the P51 guys.
If I did want to place the tailwheel in the proper fuse area,,,,, what is the easiest way to mount and connect it to the rudder control for steering ?

Finished the little Stang tonight. At least to the point of range check and maiden. A few details need doing. Came with drop tanks, exhaust pipes, gear pants, etc. Wanna see if it'll fly before adding more stuff.
Went with some Hanger9 Mustang retracts I had laying around. Had to cut and bend the gear to fit but they go up and they come down again.
Anyway,, not too bad for $119.95.

Looks great Kurt!!! Give me a hollar whenever you go maiden it, although that may be a while with our current weather forecast [:@]............. But I would love to see this plane in the air. I've been thinking about picking up the lil .46 size VQ tuskegee arf, they would look sweet together.

Get that VQ and we'll have a couple of easy loaders to fly between giant scale flights. "And your jets of course."

Same phone number here buddy. LOL,,, just kidding,,, I know you got your hands full right now.
Yup,,, I'll work on Gary England for some warmer skies . You Jones'n too eh ?
Finished up some more details on my little Stang. Was going to scheme the "Man-O-War" P51-D but stopped where I was at.
Less paint = less weight.
Gotta apply the exhaust stacks and glass the wheel wells. CG is still a tad nose heavy even after sticking the pilot, armor plate and fake radio/battery in the cockpit area. It's nice not to have to add weight to the nose of a warbird for once. During the build I moved everything I could up front. Guess it payed off.
Not quite a true Winter project by any standard of the imagination. But a very decent looking little throw in the back seat plane I can haul wherever, whenever.

Yup,, baby Stang........ Huge melon on that pilot eh ? Didn't have any smaller pilots in the toy box. Guess it's a 1/2 scale plane to pilot ratio.

Got the exhaust stacks on. Too long. Oh well. One thing I did differant was to secure the lower cowl half from the inside by making rails and bolting them together inside the cowl instead of running screws on the outside.

I have received some questions on the Cg location of this model.

My Cg location is 3 5/8" (3.625") from the fuse wing dowel support. My model required nose weight in the form of a brass hub I turned on my lathe and also an aluminum backplate I turned to replace the wobble in my plastic one. Its almost too forgiving for warbird practice.

The model has retracts and a magnum 52 for power. It is currently used as a low stress warm up model to prep me for our (HVACMAN) own composite design warbirds thats why it looks a bit neglected.

History has proven that it is better to have the correct CG by adding weight oppose to a lighter model out of CG.

Update for those who care. Maiden flight went perfectly well tonight. CG'd where Scalecraft suggested, there were no surprises.
A click or two of down elev and one click right aileron. Little plane comes in nice and slow even without flaps. Still a bit nose heavy with the Saito .72 in the front.
One point I'd suggest for grass runways ,, is before ever trying to taxi this thing get some bigger wheels. The stock wheels worked fine on the paved runway. But I had to babysit the tail to the tarmac in the super short winter grass.
The 13x4 APC I had on there for the maiden did it's duty by keeping plenty of air under the surfaces. But the end result was that I wanted more speed and couldn't get it with that 3/D prop. My vertical was killer though. I'm sure a 12x8 or 13x6 will make more IAS , but will also foul up the nice, slow approaches I had.
Final word IMHO ,,, any horror stories you've heard about these little CMP Stangs is bogus. Not for beginners,,, but you won't be chewing your nails after the first flight either. Just a smooth flying little bird. I can't speak for the other line of small birds like the P-40 or the Corsair, etc. Plus I have no idea what the NitroPlanes counterpart flys like either.
For a "throw in the trunk in case you get a chance to fly warbird". It's a winner.

P.S. Would be a great electric conversion plane too IMO.
