Looking for P-38 documentation
Hello -
I'm in the process of building a Ziroli P-38 and am looking for documentation to make it as historically accurate a possible.
The two planes pictured (I hope they come through) are the ones that I'm considering at this time. Any suggestions for color schemes and or specific historical P-38's would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

RE: Looking for P-38 documentation
Glenn -
The two at the top of the list right now are both dark green. One has yellow cowls with redish mouth and teeth. The other has a yellow nose cone with what looks to be a bird of prey scheme with red eyes.
I've thought about doing a Richard Bong scheme or a Tom McGuire scheme, but am leaning to something more unique that has not been done as much. The plane is going to scale masters so I'll be looking for accurate info and hopefully photos of the actual airplane.
Any other suggestion that anyone has for a unique plane will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

bdreed . . .
Got your pm, and responded back.
For all the guys that have sent pm's. I only have one new copy of this drawing.
I didn't think there would be so much interest. I can find out how much it will cost to get a few made at the local copy centre on Monday.

The two schemes you have chosen don't appear to be of real aircraft. They seem to be loosely based on 20th FG a/c that were based at Kingscliffe UK.
Arguably the best known 20th FG a/c in Olive Drab is Californian Cutie because of its lovely nose art and the fact the Fighter Collection at Duxford painted their P-38 in those markings.
Arguably the best natural metal P-38 id Happy Jack's Go Buggy flown by Jack Ilfrey.
Pictures of WW2 P-38's aren't plentifulbut I'd have a look at
http://www.55th.org/
http://www.geocities.com/jackilfrey/20thfg.html
http://www.littlefriends.co.uk/ and look at the 20th FG, 55th FG or 479th FG gallery pages.
Hope this helps and if you need help researching any 8th AF colour schemes please let me know and I will try and help.
Best regards
Jason

Thanks for the links. There are some interesting photos there. I too have come to the conclusion that the two planes that I've been looking for are not actual airplanes. Thanks for the input. I'll post photos when my plane is finished.

Brian, You hit the jackpot when Jason replied... Those blokes have an endless resource to WWI and WWII aircraft history. That's where the flew, and the museums there are top notch. I agree that the two color schemes you chose look like box art, not actual planes. Good luck....

RE: Looking for P-38 documentation
Brian . . . About the P38 scale drawing.
I'll put the details here, if it's ok with you. It's a bit of a hassle responding to all the pm's that I wasn't expecting. If it's not ok, just let me know and I'll delete it from your thread.
It's been a long day, but I got a price for that drawing.
The drawing is 3 feet x 4 feet.
Copies are $10.00, and about $6.00 postage anywhere in the US. Folded.
So that's $16.00 for anyone that want's me to send them a copy.
I don't subscribe to PayPal, so cash or a money order will be ok, your choice.

RE: Looking for P-38 documentation
Those profiles came out of an Arco-Aircam Avaition Series -No 10 Lockheed P-38 Lightning.
The cover says I paid $2.95 in 1970.
Here is a better one from "P-38 Lightning in Detail & Scale" part 2 (vol 58)
Thought you might also like this one from pg 48 in same book-

RE: Looking for P-38 documentation
The P38 with the yellow heads is a made up rendition of the 459th F/S CBI theater. I've done alot of research on this group and its never turned up. The A/C numbers as well as the dragon motiff are more often depicted incorrectly than not. The closest rendition I've found is Igor Svetlovs' of plane #12 Lt Seallys'. The only problem with his is the yellow outlined dragons should be white outlined. I have a color photo to prove. Regards G.

Mail came in today, thank's.
The scale drawing will be in tomorrow's mail.
I also have those Aircam books, and a few others that I'll put in the package for you.
