The scoop is a little longer than it should be, but I'm going to leave it alone as I think it looks alright. Once its painted I'll check it again and if it stands out too much I'll trim it back.

Other than that, with the tail up the axles are forward of the leading edge, so landings should be easier.

I started another thread ( http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_56...tm.htm#5646047 ) to see if I could get a response on which covering is better, Flite Metal or Metalcoat. Please pipe in if you have an opinion.

Sorry about that. He's just expressing his opinion; he doesn't like some of the other ARFs out there. And yes, I've known a lot of USAF and USN fighter, helo and heavy pilots and they all liked flipping people off. When I was at the USAF Academy, one of the honors we bestowed on certain people was a gift of a Falcon Statue we affectionately called "giving the bird!" Okay, I'll be good now.

I emailed Scaleaero ( http://www.scaleaero.com/cockpit_kits.htm ) about their 1/6 P-51 Dynaflite cockpit kit for $37. Ed emailed me the following picture. It look pretty good and I think I might order it for this plane. He has a lot of other, more detailed and more expensive cockpits, but this one should suit me fine. Scaleaero also sells Flitemetal.

This is what Ed had to say:

Here is the 1/5.5 standard P-51 cockpit kit used in the Platt and all the 1/6th ARFs.
It has detail without the higher price of the Deluxe cockpits with lots of resin details.

I used .75 oz cloth to glass the scoop with two coats of resin, then with two coats of poly. Next, I primed it and sanded it three times, with a final primer coat. The lip still needs a little attention, but it is mostly complete.

Although I am very pleased with the quality of this kit I was a little let down by the fact there was no manual for the plane, just an exploded view schematic. I've been trolling through the other posts for this kit hoping to find the control throws when I found a reference another builder had posted about the included manual. I went back and checked Nitroplanes website add for this plane and sure enough it says it comes with a manual with step by step instructions.

So, last night I emailed Nitroplanes and told them my kit never had the manual; by tonight I not only received an email from them saying they'd send me one right away, I also received a second email with a shipping order number, indicating my manual is already on its way!

This makes two problems I've had with incorrect or missing parts on this plane and Nitroplanes has quickly sent me what I need with no fuss or delay whatsoever. I've read a few other posts about some customers who've had some problems with this company, but I have to say thats not been my experience. I've recommended them to my friends and I will continue to do business with them, thanks to their prompt and great service and the quality of the kit. Good job Nitroplanes.

Not a lot to report on. I have filled in the lightening holes on the wing to get it ready for glass. Left one open on each bottom side for the aileron servos and will cut opening further in for the flaps. The trailing edge will need some attention to get it closer to scale before the glass goes on too. The other picture is a nice detail shot I came across when looking for reference materials and I thought othres could use it too. The cockpit picture is very high-resolution so you can zoom in quite a bit to see the details.

I have a question for others who've had this plane; what did you do for engine cooling? Do I have to cut a big air exit at the rear of the engine bay?

Default RE: What parts did you use to build your CMP P-51 140? (Build thread)

Got the following info in email from another builder of this plane (I asked him about the RCV engine he put in his plane):

the 140 YS is a sweet engine and keleo makes a sweet pitts muffler set up. And with the YS, fuel tank position is not an issue , but I really do not like that much engine sticking out of a P 51. I can tell you this much The engine mount system that comes with this plane is really nice and the YS 120 fits like it was made for this plane, perfect fit and centered dead nuts. The cool thing about the RCV engines are the company is great to deal with, the warranty and replacement even crash damage you cant beat it !!! and they sip fuel so you have a choice fly longer or save weight using a smaller tank.

If you have not drilled the mount holes in your engine cover yet DONT, I used 4 tiny magnets on each surface and it holds it in place like its glued. I will send pics.

I also used internal elevator linkage, the two halves are connected with SIG part # SIGSH554 heavy duty control horn 4" centered, with a long CF rod to the servo all inside the plane and no control horns on the elevator outside surface top or bottom, you can do the same with the ailerons, keeps it clean looking and scale. I used a servo speed reducer from hobby lobby on the flaps, you can adjust the speed from normal to 10 seconds brings them down nice and slow Part # S10809 listed under servo extensions on there web page.

It took me awhile to find a good internal diagram to figure out how to do the cockpit layout.

The guy (Damroadhog) who sent me the engine info and recommended that I use magnets to hold the cowl on sent pictures of his install. Also, he set up his elevator exactly how I was plannng on setting mine up. I'm still trying to figure out if I can get an all-internal linkage to my rudder.

I asked Damroadhog if he had any ideas for hiding the rudder linkage and he sent me the following idea. Seems pretty good.

For the rudder, internal linkage use (2) screws by cutting the head off , grind a flat on it and drill a hole in it. This method requires a smaller slot in the rear
Now before you install the rudder on the plane you have a point on the rudder where this meets the fuselage screw one in for the left side angling to the right and one in for the right going to the left above or below the other one, keep the angle small so you get good rudder left and right. Now cut a slot at the rear of the fuselage just big enough for them to get inside , slip the rudder on the hinges and check the alignment and free play .make this slot just below the horizontal stab to help hide it. When happy epoxy them into the tail rudder
attach pull-pull cables and feed through the slot
( remember this is NOT a 3 D air plane and you do not need more than 35 mm left or right, for flight you would probably never use that much, I would be surprised if you ever need or used more than 10 mm, your tail wheel on a pull-pull will do all the work on the ground) 99% of the time you never touch the rudder in flite but to make a click or two, for correct yaw, the only time I would worry about rudder travel is with a twin engine or 3 D plane .

Started to look at a scale flap installation tonight. Its going to be more work than I thought....I got the cart a little before the horse and had to reopen the bottom of the wing. Need to install some braces between the trailing edge and the bottom of the top side of the wing. I'm going to remove some material to make way for the lengthened flap so some balsa has to go. As I'm making this up as I go, sometimes I have to backtrack. My goal is to have the pivot point be within the trailing edge of the wing and not in the leading edge of the flap (if this makes sense) to look more like the real flap joint on an actual P-51. We'll see.

Still have a lot of work to do, but one wing is starting to look correct. Here you see my mods compared to the stock wing. Also, when I was out running around today I came upon a gaggle to Ford GTs. Not too often you see four of them sitting around together.

I have two tailwheel retracts I considered for this kit. The Robart 121 and the CJM mechanical 1/7 Top Flite P-51 forward retract (like the real plane). They are about the same size and the Robart has a greater sweep. The CJM will need a little work to smooth out the texture on the plastic parts, but is well machined and made. Below are the pictures of both showing them in the up and down positions in case anyone else is considering which unit to buy.

Default RE: What parts did you use to build your CMP P-51 140? (Build thread)

The flaps and the ailerons are almost finished and I will begin on the wheel wells to clean them up a bit and make them more scale. Then I guess I'll have to tackle the gear doors. I've been looking at the other P-51 threads and have stolen quite a few ideas. Mods like these never seem like much work until you start making them, then the hours start disappearing.

As for the different items I've ordered, here is an update:

1. The "manual" came in from Nitroplanes. It turned out to be a copy of the exploded view drawing I already had. It wasn't a step by step picture instruction book the add mentioned. As I needed the control surface throws and CG I started looking around RCU for other owners of this plane. I couldn't find anyone who listed the info (if anyone reading this has the CG location or control throws please let me know) but I did find someone who ended up emailing me a scanned copy of the instructions for the CMP P-51 Mustang 50 (thanks, RCU....the Mustang 50 build thread is at: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_52..._1/key_/tm.htm ), which is almost identical to my plane but is smaller and doesn't have flaps. This will help out a lot, but I'd still like to get confirmation of the control surface and CG info (don't need the flap throw info; a real P-51's flaps can drop to 47 degrees and mine now drop to 45 degrees....close enough).

2. The tailwheel from CJM arrived in just a few days and I will start fiddling with it soon. Have to go to the LHS and buy a tire.

3. Ordered the Flitemetal and cockpit the same day (17 Apr) I ordered the tailwheel and still haven't heard anything yet nor have I received anything in the mail. I did get the Paypal confirmation for the billing though. I guess its going to take a little while. The wing should be done soon so I hope these parts get in so I can get started with those mods.

If the parts don't arrive soon I have a back-up plan to keep me busy....I think I'll add the two exhaust vents on the bottom and back of the air scoop. Whats a few more ounces, right?

Does anyone have any more engine recommentations?

Last thought for tonight; its been awhile since I've flown a warbird, so I'm thinking of getting the P-51 PTS to get back up to speed. I know some guys who have this plane and they say the PTS is great. It should make a good lead-in plane before I step back into my other warbirds and this P-51 I'm building now.

The wing is mostly complete. Here is the left flap in the full down position. All that is left on the wing before it gets ready to be glassed is to install the servo bays, reinforce the gear area, make nicer gear bays, and glue the wing together.

I also modded the tailwheel retract. I moved the control arm to the bottom of the retract arm and this gave me about a quarter inch more movement. Its show here with a 1 1/4 Klett tailwheel, but I may use the 1 1/2 instead. I made the bulkhead it will mount to, which will be attached to the bulkhead directly behind the tailwheel bay. I will drill some lightening holes in it when I decide where the pushrods are going to go.

The first time I had the tailwheel retract in I had to use a 1-1/4 inch tailwheel and I didn't think the retract had enough range of motion to it. I made a few more mods to it, increasing overall range of motion by about a half inch, and can now use a 1-1/2 inch tailwheel. In the down position there is a two inch clearance under the scoop and the tail is a whole half inch higher up off the ground. This will help some when flying off grass strips.

Attached is a picture showing the gear test-fitted and good ground clearance.
