Rare Bear only wore this color one year. I don't like green but man does this make it look good...
Really nice job there. Looks too nice to risk flying...
If you don't like green then this color should really put you off. Too bad that the real one didn't get to fly longer before it's mishap.

This is my Bocamp Bearcat done up as the Gulfhawk IV. DA-150 powered and 108"wingspan. Good flying old bird but a bear to drag in and out of the van and put together.

Hi Gremlin Castle,

i like that scheme,[sm=shades_smile.gif][sm=spinnyeyes.gif] the Ziroli plan shows that scheme, ive only built one bearcat so i went for the all over dark blue, if i was to build another one i would posible do it the same as your Bocamp one, i enjoyed doing Micks 3W Bearcat in the scheme he chose, made a change from the 'norm'[sm=wink_smile.gif]

Keep up the good work!!

Im currently building a bearcat and was wanting to know if you could send me some detailed photos of how you rigged your cowl flaps to work. Im planning on running them on thermal sense. I just need to know how to link the doors and how many servos. I sure would appreciate it.

Hi Paul,

The cowl flaps on the Bearcat were non moving, i cut the composite fuz, reset the flaps to an open position then reglued them again, i have seen working flaps with a aplastic snake linking the cowl flaps to each other, worked by 2 small servos one on each end of the snake on another thread on here on a P47.

Thanks again,
Di n Dave...

Hi fujiman,

YEEEEERRRR man!!!!!!!......... i agree....... Bearcats rule!!!!!

Glad you liked the composite one i painted for a mate, because of this one ive realised ive missed my old Ziroli Bearcat, so........... im enlargeing the plans, bringing the wingspan from 86"to 106" to make it 1/4 scale, hope to use a Moki 215 or ive been offered a 3w 210 flat twin.......... problem is the retracts, i wanted to use Sierra, but ive been waiting for months and months for the ones for my Don Smith Tigercat, plus!!!! he wants £1,800 pounds!!! for a set of main gear....mmmmmm

All the best,
Di n Dave.....

P.S. this is the Tigercat, awaiting its retracts........

Hi Gremlin,
Who did the decals/markings/masks for your Gulfhawk? I'm doing the American Eagle 85" one and if I could buy the masks from someone it would certainly save me some time. I did a small one years ago and hand cut each marking, but don't want to do that again! Looks like you did a beautiful job. I can't wait to get on mine - when the retracts show up.
Thanks for any leads!

Mick,
Thanks for painting the airplane in Mike Geren's colors. He was a good friend of many of us in the TWA family and his death in the crash of #44 was a horrible loss. Hard to believe it was 38 years ago. I wish he had jumped out, he was a good man.

You captured the feeling of his scheme well, and I'm sure he would've eventually clipped the wings and made a lower canopy and windshield. He had a P-51H spinner on the airplane, in case you ever get the feeling to add a spinner. I suppose you have a picture of that, too.

I used to fly co-pilot with the painter as he was a TWA Captain. He said the airplane was GM metallic silver blue and the trim was actually navy blue. It was a copy of the scheme that was used on the bronze Fornof Team airplanes, you got the scheme pretty darned close. It raced as #44 at Reno 1970, #66 at Mojave 1970, and #44 at San Diego 1971, site of the accident.

Bravo on the flights, it looks like a nice flying model and you handled it well! It looks interesting with the flaps down on the clipped wing.

Here's my KMP Bearcat on it's first flight. One of the gear doors came off as I was flying too fast.

Hello Di n Dave,

Shoot a pm to Jeff Quesenberry, screen name - F4u5 here on RCU. He's got a 3w Bearcat in the Reno scheme in kit form. He could probably get you some numbers. If he can't come through I have a military version cowl that I can take some measurements. I just have to get someone to help me get it out of storage and I'll pull the cowl off for you. She's taking a nap for the winter.

A friend, Howard Davidson, down in Arkansas built the one I have. I didn't get a chance to fly it last summer and am looking forward to it when the snow melts. Really a great looking airplane.

Dave

Hi,
Thanks smurfjet(dave)

I will try to contact Geoff, that will be a big help to me, ive also contacted Cactus Aviation, as the U.K. supplier for 3W seems to have gone a bit quiet!![]

Thanks for your help, have you any photos of your Bearcat?

Hello Di n Dave

Saw this thread when going through Bearcat search in RCU.
The 3W Bearcat (military version) is actually on my workbench. Got it last summer and will install a Moki radial 215 ccm.
The measurements you are looking for are as follows:

-width firewall 34cms or 13.39 in.
-hight firewall 36,4cms or 14.33 in.
-depth of cowling: 26cms/ 10.24 in. inside or 27cms/ 10.63 in. overall

Don't know if the 3W military and reno version have the same measurements, but if necessary can inquire at the german warbird forum.
Let me know if you want to know more details but will be away for the next four days.
Greetings from Switzerland,
Daniel

Hi Daniel (swissy)

Thank you very much for the sizes of the cowl, i think you are right im sure the Reno cowl is diffrent to the military version, it is the military version i have ordered with Probuild in the U.K.

With the sizes you have given me i can now resize the Ziroli plan to fit the cowl, GREAT!!! the project can now at last get under way!!

I will keep you posted on the progress...

All the best,
Di n Dave...

Hi guys,

Started doing the paintwork preperation on this 3W composite Bearcat for a customer, its the reno clipped wing version, around 90", its already fitted out with JR digital servos, it has modified articulating retracts that are operated hydraulicly, not sure what manufacturer they are? it has a robart retracting tailwheel assembly, it will have a Moki 215 radial instaled when the owner takes it back

pictures show the cowl flaps that have been cut and repositioned, the fuz has had a 'light' rub down because i dont want to loose the surface detail but will need a good key as i will be masking off of it!!

lets here your thoughts....

di n dave...
Your oleos on the gear are BACKWARDS. They face forward on the full scale a/c

Hi BillyJ,

Yor bearcat is looking good and as you say nearly ready for paint!

Which kit is it?

I now have my enlarged Ziroli Bearcat plans, they came out (using the 3w cowl as a size reference) to 101" when i get time i will go through them and sort out the larger wood to use and to increase the quantity, the plan will also have to be modified to take a large engine!!

All the best,
Di n Dave....
