Default 1/64"tape for panel lines TF Corsair

For those who used 1/64" chart tape for panel lines on their TF 1/8 corsair, how much did you use (approx)?

Or better I guess, how many rolls would you suggest I get to do the job? No idea how many feet is in a roll though.

i didn't build a corsair, but on my 1/7 TF p-51 i used one roll and a bit. can't imagen that the corsair would have too many more panels than a Mustang so you should be safe using 2 rolls

just my 2c

thanks

Two rolls was about right for my 1/7 Jug also.

Might I ask where the best (read easiest) place is to acquire said chart tape. And lastly, is 1/32" more "to scale" in the larger birds 1/5 scale and up?

I know in the Platt videos, he uses 0.020" tape for his panel lines on the 1/5 birds. 1/32" is a good 50% wider than 0.020". Panels on planes are placed pretty much right next to each other with as minimal a gap as possible, I don't think I've ever seen one more than an 1/8". At 1/8th scale, that 1/32" would equate to 1/4" on the real deal. At 1/5 scale it becomes 5/32" or a bit over 1/8" and that's a pretty big gap. So I think Platt has the right idea for 1/5th scale birds

Question,

So is the 1/64" correct for the 1/8 scale Corsair? I just ordered some from Graf Stick Tape and Label as saramos recomended. I guess if it's to narrow I'll double it up. What do the rest of you use on the 1/8 scale Corsair or whatever? I hear alot about the 1/5 scale panel lines but not much on the 1/8 scale.

Thanks,

Gibbs

Thanks for the input folks.

About it being too wide, not wide enough: remember, you only want to give a "sniff" of any sort of demarcation between panels. Remember, it is just a line. Have it too wide and it would be a gap [sm=confused_smile.gif] instead of a line.

In most threads I've read, you generally just lay the tape down, then primer over it (2 coats?)then remove it and then sand down to virtually nothing.

I think it would be near impossible to double up the 1/64" tape. I don't know of anything thinner than 1/64th. The only place I used 1/32" was where the upper and lower cowl panels meet, and it was really a bit too wide. For lap panels, I use painters tape and tape along the panel line covering the lower panel. Then spray several coats of primer, feathering in toward the center of the higher panel. When you remove the tape, it leaves a raised panel.

saramos,

Do you have any pictures of the way it's done. I've never gone this scale before. This is my first Warbird and I want to learn right because my next Corsair is Don Smith's 1/4 scale 120" wingspan F4U-1 Corsair. I'm hoping to enter it in Top Gun when ever I get it done. It will take a long time to build so probably not until around 2009 or 10. When I said doubling up I meant side by side not on top of each other to make it 1/32" if I need it that wide anywhere. I'll just buy the 1/32" and use it when I need it.

Thanks,

Gibbs

Here are some photos. The first is after the weave of the glass has been filled and the products used. Next shows the layout of lines. I didn't take a photo of the application of the tape. Next photo shows the tape has been applied and primer sprayed. The last photo shows the primer after the tape has been pulled up.

This first photo shows several techniques. The fine panel lines are with 1/64" tape. The wider panel line below the cowl blister is 1/32" and is a bit wide, but not too bad. The line where the color change is is the joint between the removable wing and the fuselage. The fairing panel line is an example of a lap joint, made with painters tape on the lower panel (the fuse) and a build up of the raised panel with primer (the fairing). Finally, there is an even more pronounced lap panel joint which is the armour around the fuel tank. This was made by layering two or three layers of painters tape and instead of primer, I used the spot body putty.

The next photo shows the application of flush rivets. These are melted into the primer with a 1/16" brass tube mounted to a trim iron. First all the rivets were layed out with pencil to get good alignment and to insure clean intersection of rivet lines. Most lines were spaced about 6 to 8 per inch.

You can clearly see the pencil layout in the third photo.

The next photo shows the rivets being melted and before sanding the rough edges. Note the larger rivets used for the fairing which were made with a 3/32" brass tube.

Finally, the begining of the application of the color coat using latex exterior house paint sprayed with an airbrush.

I hope these photos help you out.

Scott

when you say that you used painters tape for the fairing at the wing joint, you actually left the tape down to make it appear raised? jeff

saramos,

Your great! Thanks for your description and pictures. They just made complete sense to me and I'm as clear as a bell on it now. Now I'm ready. I ordered the 1/64" tape from the site you gave me and now will order 1/32" tape also. I am sure happy someone finally explained it and illustrated the process for me

Thanks a Bunch,

Gibbs

Jeff, sorry for the delayed response. I just got back from a trip to Hawaii.

No, I don't leave the tape on. I guess the better description is to say that I mask off what will be the lower panel. The higher panel is then built up with primer. For a thicker panel lap, I use two layers of tape to mask the lower panel and use auto spot putty to build up the raised panel. Once dried, the mask is removed.

saramos,

I ordered that tape from Grafstick over two weeks ago and still no tape. Whats up with this company? Did your order take forever to arrive. I'm starting to get a little miffed at them at this point. I've e-mailed them twice and they said they shipped it. I double checked the address with them and they said thats where they shipped it. I e-mailed them again today to find out whats up with my orders and haven't heard back.[]

My order came promptly with no problems. I can only suggest continuing to communicate with them.
