does anyone have a retractable tail wheel? if so witch one do you use?

@rcguy59,
I have tried a 19/8, 18/8, 18/10 on the ground.
conclusions : I have the most torch with the 19/8

18/8 , 7500rpm , 5.5 kg.
18/10 6900rpm 4.5 kg.
19/8 6810rpm , 6.0 kg.

as I need much torch (because of our short runway) I use a 19/8.
But still is think I also will try a 3 blade 18/10.....

bonjour Pasc,

yesterday, i had also a hard landing.
because of the hard landing, the part that wass glued in het middel of the wing ( fusalage part) came off.parently it wasent glued verry well....
so it came of en get stuck at the tailwheel, the plane tiled over on the left side, so the left wing had get the full weight of the plane....and it broke in the middle of the left wing (left top is o.k.).
Seems that some wingparts are not made from plywood but made from balsa(7), so those broke....
now im repair them.
i have seen that you have repainted your wing as well. .... can you tell me if the paint you have used is the exact collor that i need?

also i wonder what type of wood they used for the broken (how do I call that...?)wingskeleton...?? I have copied wing skeleton (photo 7 ) in balsa , but the balsa piece weights only 1 gram..;the original piece weighs 2 grams....so I wonder what wood is it...? it "looks" and feels a bit like balsa but it's darker and a little bit stiffer.... Its certainly no hardwood triplex....
thanks juweeltje

For the tail wheel retractable gear I originally used the 60 size Robart, it came out to be to weak for the weight and after replacing it twice I made my own.

Hello juweeltje !!

The paint I have used is : http://www.klasskote.com/product/KKAMCGS15042 it's the same color of the kit.

Here a picture of my F8F after repair:
On my repair, I removed all the coffering and reconstructed new ribs in balsa or ply wood.
I also strengthened the main "longeron".
Then I confined completely the wing, and cover this with lite fiberglass 25gr and epoxy resin.

Have a good luck for the repair

Pasc

I buy the paint directly at klasskote.co.uk but this site is currently inactive.
I apply the paint with a airpistol.

Hi all,
I was given a ESM Bearcat with a broken wing from a bad landing, the damage is quite extensive as the top main spar broke and most of the ribs in the retract bay area split.

This model is very nice on the outside, but after a close inspection at the wing internals it is made very lightly for its size/weight and - at least mine - used the worst quality wood one could possibly find! The ribs are made of 1.5mm dry balsa that breaks if you touch it, the main spar has vertical grains (that's where it broke ofcourse)

So it looks like a major rebuild to reinforce all these weak areas.

I'm contemplating the forces acting on the wing from the landing gear, and it looks that the long struts combined with the gear mount position (near the middle of wing) and the "compressed paper" plywood used by ESM for the retract mounts is a recipe for disaster, it all has to change.

After studying a few Bearcat plan kits (Top Flite, Ziroli) I decided to install hardwood beams for the retract mounts, and spread the loads on 5 ribs rather than 2:
Of the 5 the 3 ribs are pre-existing and 2 will be half-ribs I will add myself.

For strengthening the main spar and leading edge I will add carbon fibre strips and rods

hi there,
a few months ago i had a bad landing myself,
the left wing was half destroid, the top off the wing was undamaged.
and yes, i found that the wing ribs are made from very light balsa. i replaced the broken ones with 2mm light triplex.
now everything is repared and ready to get painted...
good luck with the rebuild.....

My plan is to cover the wings with Fliteskin for extra durability and scale appearance, what do you think?

I built a Spit this way and I'm sold on it: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rc-w...fliteskin.html
