RE: KMP F8-F Bearcat
HEY, no probs, i change many things in kits for my preferred items, but these horns have stood the test of time, one thing i am going to try on my Tiffy, is to make horns out of glassfibre board, cut a small slot in the underside of the control surface, and bond the horn in, NOT i must specify, and official mod, but one that will keep the scale fidelity of the model, and that appeals to me

RE: KMP F8-F Bearcat
Hi Biggles,
From what I can read, the Jen 160 should do just fine, it's the little FS 120s that I feel sad about. I can't imagine lead in POUNDS, just SO much dead weight. If you can swing it, add a few pics if you would-I like to see the various 'Cat treatments coming along. And thanks for the 'naff' translation, we here in Central Texas are a bit sheltered, and darned cold!!
Best regards,
hookemut

Hi Hookemut , thanks , I will put some pictures together and post them on the thread. for the time being you can see my profile / images ...I did have a rare bear.. DID HAVE !!
I love the look of the bearcat ,, to me its the american spitfire . most would say the P51d [8D]... i love the distinctive tail shape the power the whole look ...simply stunning and how an aircraft should look. I too want to avoid carrying all that dead weight.. I'd rather draft in more power with a larger heavier engine. I want it to remain scale , no exhausts sticking out the side .... by the way ..the weather here in Robin hood country is wet... floods everywhere so flying is a long way off.
Hi alanc the horns you talk of sound right up my street...I'd like to see some pictures when they are done.......

RE: KMP F8-F Bearcat
Hi all, 2 of us here in New Zealand have the bearcat the tailwheel is a weak point especially with the weight at the tail we didn,t put a retract in ours but we opened up the bottom of the fuse where the tail wheel goes( and made a hatch there) and made another small former out of 1/8th ply and packed the back of it with 3/4 balsa then epoxied it against the back of the existing former in the model, and put a steerable tailwheel onto the new former using a plastic bearing same as you have on the nosewheel of a trike plane. It works well and we kept the down angle quite steep and short. just my input this is an excellent forum

Hi awatoto,
Really enjoyed your post-when you get time, perhaps you would tell us a bit about your 'Cat-engine choice, weight/balance? Here is how we resolved the tailwheel setup-that is the small Robart assembly. We fly off of a grass strip and so far, not a single problem !

I believe I will make a move towards my first gas engine to try and give this girl a bit more motivation.
It flies fine if a little conservatively with the Saito 125 and that lump of lead, but hookemut is right, it's just dead weight pulling on the firewall...
But for the moment until the Minister for War and Finances aproves a new engine, the 125 will need to stay...

RE: KMP F8-F Bearcat
Hi hookemut, yes your tailwheel setup is a good sturdy retro. My Bearcat was at a stage one days work on it and it would've been ready to fly when a couple of friends came round to to check out the cg when we noticed how much flexing the bottom of the fuse was doing with the factory tailwheel setup. So hence the retro fit of the tailwheel. I had an OS160 in the front and I,ve since had other thoughts and have ordered a Zenoah G26ei. I put a G26 in my Seafury and it flies really nice and very predictable. My thoughts were in models like these with high wing loadings the OS160 is only good for about 10 minutes max and if someone else is in trouble and you have to go around again the last thing you need is a dead stick, where with the G26 you've similar power but an extra 10 minutes of flying time. So out came the OS160. We did however do a cg balance before I took the 160 out and we had to add 2lbs lead to get the cg location. After that we weighed everything and we came out on the high side of 17lbs and I still had to add 2x2000mah batteries. Another flier in our club whose now flown a few of these kits namely Spitfire, ME109 likes his cg 1/4" ahead of where the factory put it then when your on landing approach they hold a nice decent without the tendancy to porpoise on flair.
Just a note on the Zenoah G26ei we're taking off the factory ignition and putting on a retro ignition supplied from CH Ignition in the US their website is www.ch-ignitions.com the factory ignitions are drawing 2.4amps current at full throttle advanced, where CH Ignitions system only draws .4amp at full throttle, actually my friend with the other Bearcat is also putting a CH ignition on his G26 also and they both arrived here today....... before our engines. Wind blowing 110mph here today

Hello Bearcat-fans, today i got a parcel, it smelled like dark-royal-blue paint and it is the bearcat )))
I will take EUROKIT landing gear, www.lindinger.at (also my bearcat, and other warbirds )
After your good flight and landing tests and because of nicostoffis building doku at the www.warbird-forum.de
i will make a marriage considering the bearcat and THIS engine, enjoi vids and turn speakers loud ))
you see engine working in the kmp super sea fury, cowl dia was to small, but in bearcat it fits

and in flight:

Yeah well, I bit hte bullet and picked up an SPE 26cc as my first gas engine...
Shame to leave the lovely sounding 4 stroke behind on this one, but that 1.25 kg (2.75 lb's) of lead has to go!

But it did fly ok with the 125? I don't want to invest in an expensive plane if my even more expensive engine won't pull it well. The 170R weighs in 1.5ish pounds more than the 125 and prolly has relatively equal power.

I sure did. It was a juggernaut however.
Plenty of time to build up speed, but nothing that you couldn't predict. Kinda like a real one I suspect.

As to the 'time to build up speed'-I suppose that could be relative, but to me, going from SNJs and F6-F Hellcats and with a R2800 on such a small airframe-it was a real ride!!

Hello,
let me give you some pics of my F8F.
Ordered 18 days ago, coming three days later from Austria.
Take a robart retract tailwheel and as power a Laser 180.
Only the wheel baffles will take more time ( 2 days or more )[&o]

Hi nicostoffi, I see you've added some weathering looks good I like weathering my models but been in 2 minds myself to add weathering or not as the finish is so great. I might just have to tell everyone mine is just fresh out of the factory.

Hi hookemut, great to see it taking to the air again looking really great just interested to hear how the retracts are working, and what the final dry weight of the bird was

Adding a spring from a retractable ball point pen seemed to be an essential addition to the air valve, it stopped a leaking (yet brand new) seal rather nicely.

Hi,
YESSS! Very nicely done! As you know, darned few new products ever get thru life without the infamous 'mod' The YS/KMP Bearcat doesn't need many, the air fill valve is one, crossing the elevator guide tubes is another.
Hope you get to fly your 'Cat soon!!

Hi Nicostoffi
I can read you bought your plane in Austria, I thought the dealer for Germany and Denmark where I am from is Eurolight. But I can not figure out whether they have it on stock. Who is the dealer in Austria?

Hello,
www.lindinger.at
At this moment cost 469 Euro, Eurolight will sell for 399 Euro.
