Went here: http://www.vqwarbirds.com/vq/product.../ESMFW190.html , says the diameter is about 8.25" so thats about 21 cm. If the motor is 18cm plus 20mm for the plugs that would put you about even. You could always try and rework the two blisters on the cowl to hide them if it doesn't fit, but but man it would be close. $469 bets anyone?

Might be worth a shot still. Even if there are two little holes cut for the caps it's not going to be noticeable at 120 mph.

Fine. The 40 twin it shall be. Less vibration too than the single. It's going to be tricky sneaking this in the house past the wife.

Oh-boy, nope, no real cure or help for that. Guess the old "rather beg for forgiveness then ask for permission" applies here. Best of luck my friend, and when you're let back out of the dog house let us know how the twin goes!

Won't be for awhile. Still have 4 feet of snow on the ground here. Maybe sometime in June our field will be flyable. Frost is down more than 8 feet in most places. Our field is going to be a swamp for most of early spring. I will post build pics when everything arrives.

What I can say is that after putting a 1.7 kg motor with all the trimmings and getting it balanced I had to put 1.2 kg on the fire wall to get it balanced at 140mm. It's actually quite scary.

Thanks stick mode. Ur help has been invaluable. It's nearly all set to go just waiting on tail wheel and a 16x8 prop to arrive,I will post pics of the final product before maiden.this has been a great project. What I have learnt is to respect our hobby and to recognise that it's not just a toy! It's a engineering masterpiece that involves measurement, patience and discussion with great people who care about our craft..

I don't post here often but wanted to make a note. We've decided to pull the Hacker A60, which powered it very well, and will be putting in a DLE 35 RA. A couple of reasons. While the motor was perfect, I'm finding the larger batteries/motors are not as easy to "fit" into my inventory as a smaller Parkzone P-51. The batteries are great but still have a tendency to puff slightly which says I'm running them near the limit. Second reason, we have three other gasser warbirds and I'm just wanting to move into a "standardized" power plant set up.

This thing needs a lot of weight up front and with the Hacker/batteries, we still added some lead to the motor mount. I'm sure the DLE-35 will require even more... Planning on a Biela 18x10 3 blade after break in. Wish me luck

We'll, I've converted mine to the DLE35RA this past week. Simple bolt on setup but now I can't get the engine to do anything but pop every so often. I've destroyed my arm muscles and have given up for a little bit. I guess I'll throw a starter on it and see what happens. I've viewed the help videos and trouble shot everything. It'll work out. Just getting frustrated.

Finally resorted to my little Kavan starter!! It started up after running on choke/wide open throttle for about 10 seconds before a pop. Closed the throttle to about 1/4. opened the choke and it started right up. Now comes the daunting task of balancing. Now, it's way tail heavy compared to the Hacker setup

Did I ever post these? It is my somewhat changed ESM FW-190 modelled after the Rote13 of Heinz Bar, 221 victory ace that actually survived WWII. It flies very well with the 2 cylinder Laser 200v in front. I should receive a spinner and retractable tail wheel in a few days so can upgrade the plane further. Total weight is 7.3kg (15pounds?) but it flies very well.

Does anyone have an extra canopy for an ESM FW-190 71" wingspan?

Thanks

Fred, you can order a better upgraded version from Ty's planes. Also available at VQ warbirds.

Anybody notice the new prices of the ESMs? Add on the cost of shipping and they are now as much as their Top Flite and Hangar 9 counterparts when you consider there are ways of getting those without the $100 + shipping. That and add in the cost of replacing the junk hardware and time it takes to re-engineer ESM (or CMP+), they just priced me out of their market, so alas, it doesn't look like I'll be doing the one I had planned for next fall. I'll still watch what you guys are doing, but the compromise for me with the lesser quality of esm was the lesser price. I do admit they have a much better selection of birds, though, it would be nice for the other guys to step up their selection past P51's, P47's and Spitfires (and of course the F4u)..

The best thing about ESM stuff is how nice they CAN look and how well they fly once you navigate the frustrating waters of correcting the crappy parts.
Ive owned many of the ESM birds and they are really worth it!
Besides. "Scale" models shouldnt use ultracote/monocote as a finish. Glass n paint just looks right.

I agree with you 100%, they do look nice, and with work they do fly nice, and I don't like shiny warbirds either, but my point is the old adage 'you get what you pay for' which I believe was true with the esm's, but now you're kind of not. And with a little work you can make one of those shiny warbirds over as well, like my Hangar 9 Hellcat for example. And really if I wanted to go nuts I would likely go with a TF ARC or a build like Ziroli or Yellow. My point is, and I truly not trying to convince anybody to not get them or start a "rumble on the board", is just that for me, I dont think ESM is doing a wise thing here. I still like to see what you guys are doing with them, and I will still troll the net looking for deals, or wait for black friday, etc, just wont pay the big dough outright.

J301,
I'm with you. ESM was a good deal for the money but now that prices are claiming that value is starting to diminish. If they are going to start asking the higher prices they should get better hardware at least.

Yeah, the price hike is really too bad. I wanted another one of these but have opted to pass. Maybe if more people support it, they'll get a clue. Highly unlikely though.
