Works fine if you bottom hinge the aileron with the hinge line the same as the horn pivot, makes a proper Frise aileron, just like the real one.

For those of you that don't like to have control rods visible on the outside of your plane I have pictures of a hidden system that I set up for my flaps. I've used this several times in the past with good results and it is very easy to setup and modify an ARF such as this. Attached are some pics for clarity. The key is to have the horn located in such a way that there is some offset and still have clearance so that the flap can swing.

The first pic is the horn I made.It just fits in the space available.

Been away from the forum for months but have finally dusted off old White 11 and looking forward to getting her finished up. Had surgery on my hand here and seperated from the wife,,,,,now with that out of the way time to focus on getting this baby finished up. See some great new ideas and concepts have been posted along with more great looking Butcher Birds. Here are a few pics of mine through the build so far........

Hi Guys, I finally got to Maiden mine last Thursday, and wished i had stayed in bed... She is no longer a virgin, cause she is f**ked...

Flew well for 6 minutes, then I got it too low and too slow... then the engine cut, and it went in from about 15 feet.

Wing bolts ripped out the attachment points from the fuselage, and ripped up the side of the fuse in the process. Wing came out with relatively little damage.

Can I have some guidance please as to how to effect repairs to the fuselage ???

Kindest regards, Rob.

Sorry to hear about your crash Rob
I have only had to repair small cracks in my rear fuselage/tail area and for that I just used lightweight glassfibre and resin, I'm sure some off the glassfibre experts will be able to guide in the right direction?
Have you got any pics of the damage?

Rob

Me too for the condolences on the crash. As Simon said pix would help. You might also want to contact Anthony at Austars and get a price on a new fuse. Problem will be getting the stab etc off the old one, but it can be done.

If you can't get inside the fuse to fix it can be done outside. I did this on my 1st one after it nosed over on landing and cracked the rear of the fuse at a point that I could not get to. You can disguise the patch as a field repair! I used a medium to heavy weight cloth on mine as I wanted a structural repair.

Maiden on mine was scheduled for Sunday but got put off because the weather was **** and also I felt like **** with some kind of bug. Would have been a waste of time going out anyway as I did a test run Sunday arvo and found I had acquired the mother of all interference problems! Was surprised to begin with as it had been run before, then I remembered that I had moved the throttle servo into the cowl.

At the moment I am thinking the problem is that the servo cable is too close to the battery lead to the CDI, which will carry a fair spike of current to charge the capacitor, so will be moving the lead and trying again. As I am running 2.4GHz I was suprised at the amount of interference, however the good thing was it was way too much to miss, so there was no way I would fly with it.

Hi Terry and Simon,
thanks for your thoughts. I have spoken to Anthony, he is great. I will attempt to effect repairs myself, however I am concerned at the weight issue. I have been told that this model has been flown at between 5 - 6 Kg. Mine came in at 6.88 dry.???

Can I get some assistance as to uploading pictures please... (newbie strikes again)...

Kindest regards,
                               Rob.

they only sell the 2 bladed spinners now in the proper size(the D9 version),I asked if they were going to make more and they said no, when the supply runs out of the 2 blade there done as well.

I ordered another spinner from yt in England, http://www.ytinternational.co.uk/spinner/spinners.htm they come uncut so you can make them work for a 3 blade prop(my intention) it was about 40/E pound shipped

Rob,

The only way you would get one of these to 5Kgm would be to fill it with hydrogen

Dont worry too much about the weight, my 1st one with the composite wing came out at about 8Kgm and flew just fine. I was a bit apprehensive before the first flight, so I did a few fast runs down the strip and convinced myself that it did want to fly.

My current one is about 7.5Kgm, at 6.88 yours is a lightweight.

As far as pics are concerned the usual pitfall is that you can't download on Fast Reply, you have to hit the Post Reply button.

I have to agree with Terry too Rob, never heard of one at 5-6kgs?
mine was over 7kgs but have managed to ditch 1/2lb of lead and now she is 6.95kgs
so don't worry about an extra bit of weight if yours is only 6.88kgs already

BTW Rob (and any others) I noticed you have a DX8, have you had any problems, short range? lost link/bind? crashes due to it and so on? I have read of no end of problems on forums over here in the uk?

Hi Simon,

One guy who flies at our field had a DX8 which he has now abandoned after losing a (big) plane to what was attributed to Tx problems. You can never be sure but it was enough to stop me from getting one. Pity because another channel would mean I dont need a multibox on the flaps (I use a channel as an ignition kill).

I have been operating a Dx7 for several years now with no problems, you would have expected the Dx8 to use a lot of the same technology (RF stage etc) but maybe not.

Hey guys anyone know where I can buy a canopy from? Plane flipped on a thick grass runway and cracked the canopy. Many sell them but no one has stock.

Have you tried Tomas at VQ Warbirds? He stocks Ty's canopies, these are a lot thicker and more resilient than the supplied one (I have one).

Hi Simon and Terry,
it looks like I'm on another "learning curve" as far as epoxy repairs go...

The plane didn't last long enough to get any perceivable radio problems, but thanks for the heads up... I think I'll go and buy some brown trousers just in case...

I'll have a go at this pic uploading. thanks for your support.

Kindest regards,
Rob.

Nice job of weathering

You should be able to get inside the fuse to fix the tear caused by the wing making its escape. Finding matching paint that is glow fuel resistant may be challenging. Are you aiming to repair it to be pretty or to fly? My 1st got knocked around as a result of persistent retract problems (that's why I now have Sierras) so in the end I bought a new one!

Hi Terry,
I am considering using this opportunity to cut out the top deck to install the cockpit tub, which means doing the modified formers as well...

I haven't done any fibreglass repair work since I did my Airframe apprenticeship in the RAAF in 1983, so I need some advice in this area...

I wasthinking of strengthening the area with 1/4 oz fibreglass, roving strands of carbon fibre and epoxy, but have been advised to put the epoxy and cloth outside the fuse as well, to minimise de-lamination...

I'm going to make it as pretty as I can, but i want it to fly... How do Warbirds Colours go with a coat of clear lustrecoat ? Would that fuel-proof it ?

Kindest regards,
Rob.

Hi Rob

Home now, wifes yacking on the phone, so time to talk planes!!

I have now installed 2 cockpit kits, #1 was the Dynamic Balsa one, #2 Ty's that I got from Tomas at VQ. With the 1st I installed a new former, with the second 1 just installed a crosspiece under the cockpit wall to ensure stiffness. Which is best? IMO hard to say, both have good and less good points.

1/4 oz seems awful light for glasss cloth, the lightest I have used is .58oz for covering on top of balsa. Seems to me that this would be on the light side. Got the glass from somewhere in WA. I am no expert on glassing but I don't see how putting it on both sides would stop delaminating.

Never used Warbirds Colours so can't help there. Last glow paint job I did I used Nelsons clear coat from the USA over a water based paint from the local paint store. This was on an Ultrasport 60 and seems to work OK.

BTW, what size motor is in your 190? I have an ESM Bf 109 that's been sitting in the workshop for maybe 2 years now, also a new Thunder Tiger 130 4 cycle. One of the guys at our club was flying an ESM Spitfire on a 120 4C so I am hoping it will be OK.

BTW again, FW190 #2 came to an end when I tried to be really cool by hitting the retract switch just after the wheels left the ground. The plane rolled left and refused to obey the commands that I send to the ailerons! Had done a good long run to build up speed before rotating, so the only conclusion I can make it that lifting the gear too soon destabilised the plane. Did a better job than you though, the only repair option involved plastic (my credit card!). Just had to have another though.
