RE: Jerry Bates Bearcat
Well after alot of trouble, waiting, and being lied too I finally demanded my plans back (for the second time) and have recieved them in the mail. None of the work was done..I just got the plans back....I'll never use All American Kit Kutters again....But anyways I have bought the wood and will cut it myself...onward and upward...

RE: Jerry Bates Bearcat
nice project.
I unwhittingly purchased the rare bear arf from thunder tiger.(JUNK)
Might as well have built one. Anyhow, Im installing micro servos today, that will accuate the inner gear doors, Via ball links and rod.
Have yall done anything with the inner gear doors yet?
Id like some ideas.............I plan on keeping it simple with the two micro servos installed in the wells, or in the fuse next to the well.
Anyhow, its been a nice thread.....keep up the good work!

RE: Jerry Bates Bearcat
Bignasdy, I'm installing air cylinders on my inner gear doors. They work by a button actuator on the mains. When the mains come up or go down the button activates and causes the inner gear doors to open or close in sequence. At least that is the way they are supposed to work. I'm just now framing up my wing. I have the ribs and main and rear spars installed. The rails are in for the landing gear, but I don't have the gear doors built yet. The fuselage is finished. We have a giant scale warbird fly-in the weekend of April 15th but I don't think I will be quite ready for it. The building will be complete but not the finish. Oh well, I've spent too much time and energy (not to mention $) to rush and screw up the finish. Good luck with your Bearcat! Lance

RE: Jerry Bates Bearcat
I am using the mechanical gear..no air......
okay.... heres my simple ..yet complicated idea......
Problem #1: I only have a 6 channel transmitter, and the ailerons are using the sixth channel for speed brakes. All my planes are set up this way for obvious reasons.
I could do without, and run the doors on the 6th channel.....but I dont want to.
Problem #2: The doors close before the gear is up, so the wheel hits the door.
Again, another channel besides the 5th gear channel would be nice.
So.....is there something on the market to slow the submicros coming back up? say a voltage reducer?
I wonder if I bought a 7 channel computer radio, if the 7th channel on my 127df receiver will work with it?
Also, thats not the gear door that will be used. Thats simply a design tool, and new ones will be built nicer, lighter, and cleaner, once I get all the bugs out.
Thanx for any help!

RE: Jerry Bates Bearcat
Bignasdy, you need some sort of sequencer. They make them for air retracts but I don't know about an electronic one. Mine works from a mechanical button that is pressed when the mains come up. That sends air to the cylinder on the inner gear doors. and then closes them. I don't think the number of channels on your radio will have any effect, unless you want to flip two switches to work the mains and then the inner doors. Lance

I dont mind having the doors on another channel, I just dont have a channel available. I think Il just test fly th thing first, then if I can do without the airbrakes, Il finish the doors and put them on the flap channel.
Thanx for the input!

Since I am about to begin one of these, it's time to resurrect this thread!
Have any of you guys finished your Bearcats?
I have the laser cut parts from Bob Holman. The canopy and cowl are from Jerry.
I am using a Ralph Cunningham EI conversion G62, a pair of Gene Barton retracts that should be here any day now and a custom scale exhaust from Kelvin at Keleo Creations.
I made a firewall mockup to send to Kelvin so he can fit the exhaust to it.
This is my first larger scale aircraft and my first gasser in 27 years of RC flying, so I am psyched!
I'll post some pics of the firewall and cowl mockup tonight......

Well, after a week of hand wringing due to Postal Service ineptitude, my retracts have arrived! They were sent Priority Mail 10 days ago, and just arrived today. I think Gene was more nervous about it than I was. To his credit, he was gonna file the insurance claim and make me another set if they didn't arrive......
Just like Dave, I could watch these things work for hours! The workmanship and attention to detail that Gene puts into these things is unbelievable. Great guy to do business with. I ordered them mid august and got them today. A long wait, but well worth it for the quality. I wasn't planning to start the plane until this winter anyway, so the timing was perfect......
They may not be 100% scale, but they definitely scream BEARCAT!
I'm actually gonna start working on the control surfaces this evening when wifey goes to bed.........

It's time to resurrect this thread..... I am expecting my fiberglass fuse from VicRC next week.
I just started putting the wing together..... It is pretty straightforward. The first wing panel is built flat on the board, then, after it is all sheeted, it is blocked up and the other panel is built. The laser cut parts snap together like a puzzle and the center section structure is quite sturdy, even without any glue! This wing is very well engineered. I am gonna leave the bottom unsheeted until both panels are built.
The only real question I had was with how the spar tapered. I had to taper it on the inside in order to keep it straight on the outside.
Here are a few pics......

RE: Jerry Bates Bearcat
Before Dave shamed me into posting on this thread, I didn't take any pics of the left wing as it was being framed up and built.
So, here is the right wing.
The spar notches on the ribs outboard of R9 are progressively shallower. This requires the spar to be tapered on the inside in order to not have to bend it into position, which could create a warp. I've laid a straight edge into the top spar notch to demonstrate. Notice the gaps on all the middle ribs, and this is with a tapered lower spar already in place. It gets far worse if an untapered spar is put on the bottom, as the ribs won't sit flat on the table, creating a large wash in.

Oh, I almost forgot.......
I needed someone to fly this thing........ Since I've been building primarily Naval fighters over the years, word of my (lack of) building prowess has gotten out amongst the Naval Aviators, so I had to recruit an Air Force guy.... I told him it was a top secret, hush hush, need to know mission and he jumped on it. AF fighter pilots are so gullible.....
I'll repaint his helmet to remove the USAF logo (this is a top secret mission, you know) and he should look pretty close to a '50's vintage Naval Aviator.
He looks on with a jaundiced eye...... "Hey, don't you need more glue on that spar?"

Tripower, It sure feels good to have this thread going again. [sm=thumbup.gif]
That is a great looking wing with those gear. Good job.
I contacted Bob Holman, and he will sell just the scale wing kit by itself. He said there was a problem with his cutter, but I should have the wing kit in a few weeks.
From previous experience (building the wrong wing and having the scale wing litterally kit my ass) the 3/8" square spars really don't need to be tapered. Just notch them enough to push down flush over each rib. The spar at the #14 rib needed trimmed since that rib is so short in height.
Has Jerry ever replied to the use of a G-62 in this? That would certainly be the equivilant of thowing a big block in it! Where's the 4-speed go?
Be certain to post some pictures of that FG fuse when you get it. That sounds pretty sweet.
Nice pilot too.

I didn't think to notch the spars! It would've been a ton easier and stronger too!
According to the Fed Ex tracking, i should have the fiberglass fuse on Tuesday!
This is the guy I bought the fuse from......... I also got a new cowl, belley pan and canopy frame as well. The new cowl has panel lines and is perfectly fitted to the glass fuse.
