Default Me-109, Meister or PCM???

Hey yall,

I was looking around for a nice Giant Scale Me-109 when I found 2 really nice manufacturers...
I really need the help to decide what plane it should be...

Lets get to business....
My two manufacturers are:
PCM models (www.flypcm.com)
and
Meister Scale (http://www.meister-scale.com/me109.html)

I compared both of the planes and I came to the following:

the PCM model got lots of good ratings, Is fairely easy to build (cause of the fuse) BUT is @#$@# expensive for a poor student like me...
the Meister model is much cheaper, but is a lot more to build (but I haven't seen the kit yet, already mailed the manufacturer for pictures) and the whole thing is made up of wood, which means that it's nice to work with, but also very easy to destroy...

hope somebody can help me...
ty

Default Me-109, Meister or PCM???

Jakob, If you only want a sport scale flyer do the Meister. If you want to end up with an exact scale competition machine go PCM. You will find if you were to make the Meister into a model comprable to the PCM you would end up having close to the same money in it and a heck of a lot more work. Don

Default Me-109, Meister or PCM???

Don,
Thanks for helping...
I think I'll go with the Meister cause I'm not really into scale competition... I just want a plane that looks good in the air and makes fun to fly...
BUT I think I'm going to start save my money to buy me the PCM 109 someday...

Jakob, Have a good kit cutter do your kit. I find that most have nice balsa at a reasonable price so just get a full kit. Get a good reliable engine not a cheap one. This hobby is like anything else, you get what you pay for!

Default PCM

Jakob, You might want to reconsider and save your pennies for the PCM 109. It is alot more scale, easier to build and has a much better wing airfoil. All of meisters designs are a flat bottom wing and are set up for Century Jet gear only. You can use the robarts or the sierra precision gear in the PCM. You can build the PCM 109 as scale as you want. You dont have to go to competitions with it, build it how you want to. If you havent seen it already, full progress pics are on my website. I have meister's plans for the 109 and 190 and the PCM is EXACT scale, and just plain looks more like a 109 should.

Jakob,

If you are a hard core (me) fan of the 109, consider the following.

I would build and get stick time on the cheaper one. Then you will have more knowlege, not only on the characteristics of flight (take off, landing), but color schemes.

Get comfortable flying the cheap one.

Then move up to the PCM.

My two cents

Evan,

How much do you need for the Meister 109 and 190 plans? I am willing to take them off your hands. You know me, I love to build. I don't know the cost of the PCM compared to the Meister kit, but wood kits are usually less $ and more work. Flight performance on the Meister is very user freindly.

Default 109

One other point that seems to have been missed....its 10 times easier to repair a wooden model than a glass one. (Mishaps do happen!)

Default Plans

Carey, Thanks for the offer but I think Im gonna hold on to em. I plan to start building the meister Fw190 next with a new wing that has a better airfoil and can accept the sierra precision gear which is the same gear used in the Vailly Fw190a but slightly larger.
Greyfly, Dont forget that the PCM has foam/balsa wings which are easy to repair. If you somehow break the fuse, you can order just the front fuse half and graft it onto your original tail saving alot of time. One other good point of the PCM 109 is that the fuse sits on its gear when you take the wings off, making transport and storage real easy, just like the large aerobatic birds.

Default Me-109, Meister or PCM???

hi guys,
thanks for all of your tips and suggestions...
I think that I'm going to get me the PCM, cause most of you say it's more fun to build and fly (I think those are the 2 most important things in R/C modeling , another thing is that I just got a pay raise

I'm planning to use a 3W-70i engine (I think a 75 is 2 much for me and the 60 is just not enough

I got a Futaba receiver (can't remember the name...doh... >_

Default the look

OK... I was thinking about what my baby should look like and I found the following pics
These pictures are from Erich Hartmanns Me-109 G14, Kdr.I./JG 53
this is the winter version... I kind like it more than the "normal one" but it's kinda boring 2... just white...
but just go ahead and tell me what you think

Default different variants

Jakob, Which ever scheme you plan to do, you can order the different scale details from PCM. If you plan on doing the white one, you can order the tall tail option from Pat. If you are doing a K or G-10, you can order the different style gun bulges for the fuse and different wheel bulges for the wing. Currently, my 109 is in primer and Im installing the various scale goodies that make mine a G-6.

Default Me-109, Meister or PCM???

Scotty,

I think you are the guy I just replied to concerning a G - 14. I did not get a picture through in your e-mail and so I couldn't determine what extras you needed. Now that I see your posts I know which one you are talking about. In fact I was going to do this very model but choose another scheme instead. I think I can find out more about this model as I seem to remember having some documentation on it. I spent a lot of time on the phone with the artist (Jerry Crandal) that made the print that you show in one of your posts.

As I mentioned in my e-mail, the 14 has a wide range of features that make it difficult to determine the exact mark. I have seen some that are carbon copies of a G - 6 and the only way to determine the true designation is to know the werk number and reference it to known production blocks.

I have a book that I would recommend to anyone considering building a 109. It is published by Prien and Rodeike and is titled
"Messerschmitt 109 F,G and K series, an illustrated study"

This book has to date been (in my opinion) unsurpassed in its clarification and identification of the varied and numourous marks of the later 109s. Also you can find this book at Zenith books and I think their web address is www.zenithbooks.com.

Anyway, If you need to you can call me at 561 793 6850 and we'll try to get you set up.

Default PCM 109

Jakob,

Well all I can say is if you go to Pats you might as well take your
checkbook because you WILL want one I am doing a
G14 as well with the tall tail. You just can't go wrong with this
kit. Mine will be powered by a 3W70i.

Good luck

Hey Chuck,
so I'm not alone ....
What kinda "skin" are you going to use?? would like to see yours

I know what ya saing... I'm upset with 109's and I really like Patricks... BUT YOU GOT JUST 2 MUCH TO CHOSE FROM.... A nice cockpit kit here, a tall tail here, or the short one... hmm
I's also going to put a 3w-70i in it... just perfect for my needs...

Well like I said ... hope to see some nice picks soon

nighty night

Default PCM 109

Jakob,

I'm doing Richard Franz's G-14/AS. Pictured is Eric Wipples
model. I do have documentation but could stand to get more.

Ya have to go off the exact bird your gonna do. There where all
kind of field mods etc. Get Pats Cockpit (very nice), cast exhausts,
& the scale gear if you can afford it (they are great).

Later
Chuck

Default 109

I got it on good source (Vailly himself) as soon as he finishes his firefly for top gun he will be doing an Emil. Also Rawle Aviation has a nice 109G and is supposed to be working on a 1/3 scale all built up which I cant wait for I think it is an Emil but not sure.

Default 3w70i and 3w75i

These two engines have the same physical size and weight. I would go with the 3w75i in case you want to swing a bigger prop and a 3-blade prop.

FYI:
3w75i = $575, 7.5 hp
3w70i = $545, 6.5 hp

Default Me-109, Meister or PCM???

Chuck,
we need some pictures!! ... I wanna see what you're doing there...

Vic,
THe 75i can spin a bladed prop. with size 21x10;19x12;20x14;22x12;23x10;23x12

and the 70i
21x10;19x12;20x14;22x12;23x10;23x12

so it is the same ...
the 75i weighs 2360g and the 70i is 2390... the 75i got 7.5 hp and the 70i got 6.5...
I mean I don't really need a high power engine... but the price difference is only 30 bucks or so... I think, like you said, that I'm going to get the 75i, it probably makes more fun to fly
I'm going to talk to some of my friends in Austria (Europe, thats where I'm from ) maybe they can get me the engine for less, cuz it's a german corp. that produces them...

well ty for your posts and tips
