Default Black Horse P-51 Build

Well... for those of you also looking at this bird, I thought I'd post some photos for you of where I've gotten to so far. Since I'm waiting for my next paycheck and Tower Hobby to stock some engines, I went and finished up as much as possible. Here are some photos of my P-51... and any comments on the Star on the left wing will be ignored! I can blame my son for that one who distracted me while I was putting on the emblems. Also added some paint to blend in them ugly Servo Horn Mounts!! From White to Silver and Black in the photo....

Wow, what Winter can do to keep you busy with details.

Hope ya like!

Looks terrific. I've been thinking about getting the BH p-51 - have you had a chance to fly yours yet? Does the kit come with exhaust stacks for the cowling?

Well, I've completed Building the BH P-51 and am sad to say... haven't flown it yet. It's gonna have a Magnum 91FS which is mounted, but has to come off for break-in. Not to keen on breaking it in on the plane.

Black Horse Models here in Mass was kind enough to get me a new instuction book... needed the CG most of all, plus the patern that's included for a OS 91FS for the cowl. I HATE cutting cowls! And the patern matched up perfect for the Magnum! Why shouldn't it... knock offs.

So it sits in the basement, waiting for some warmer weather and break-in of the engine. I wish I could comment on how she flies, but will have to get some air time in with a couple of other planes first to get my rusty fingers ready for the maiden.

I didn't see any stacks for the exhaust in the kit, so you'd have to fashion some or get some to complete the look.

So, have you finally flown her ? Looking fwd to a flight report.
I figured a 60 2 stroke would fly her nicely... Lemme know, I thought of getting one to bash into something a lil' better looking that the stock out of the box ARF. I wish we had the yellow nosed detachable wing version here in the USA. For the $$ the BHM's a a great deal.

Late last year I did get a chance to finally fly the P51 and had a BLAST. Maiden was perfect, landed a bit faster, but it was expected... After making sure everything was tight and no problems the fun began.

I have a 91 Magnum in mine. But have to say it was just a great day. Am looking forward to taking it up again in a few weeks. Have to get my radio back from service first and take up the Sig Senior to get rid of the Winter thumbs.

Hope to have some video up... I'm sure you'll have an absolute blast! My only issue are the retracts. I either have a bad servo or something which I discovered when I wanted to take her out the second time. It's on my list... like we all have!

okay...So here's what the stock plane looks like:
As expected from BHM, the plane was well built and fpr the Price (under $150.00) can't be beat...(If I was to build this from scratch, I would have spent that much in materials alone).[8D]
Clearly the plane is "SPORT SCALE" and has many scale defficiencies, but for banging around the field, with the proper paint scheme and some light detailing, It could skunk other ARF's out there.
Let's see what i can do...

There were a-lot of what I call "uglies" that this plane had as a result of the manufacturer. "old Boy" in itself wasn't a bad scheme, but just not my look.
For whatever reason many of the lesser known ARF manufacturers seem to find the worst decals and "trim" detailing which doesn't help.
I could spend many hours disassebling the plane to add scale details, but I really want to fly her. So instead of rebuilding the tailplane & other bits...Paint will be my meathod on this plane.
So to create a Blank canvass, I'll sand the rudder & nose, add paint to match the rest of the covering, to neutral out the lame scheme.
The stock pilot (that looks like a doll) needs some serious attention too, so I had to revove the servo trav to access the cockpit.

Here are the problems you WILL run into...

Wheel wells don't quite fit right.
Tires are a tad too small, I replaced mine with Dubro (3.25 or 3.5, can't remember SOLID, treaded) wheels. Don't attempt to use any foam type ones, they will shred due to the weight. Remember to toe in (which will cause another issue with the way they want to sit in the wells.
Since the Tail uses a split elevator which will require 2 servos, you'll either have to make up your mind on how to tackle that one. I just tied 2 together and made sure the clevis and servo were set identical on movements. And with a 7C which doesn't give you the option to trim out a second channel on a primary one is a bia'ch.
Fit was perfect.
And I used a Magnum 91 4S and didn't have to add an ounce of weight. Just pushed the battery pack as far forward and it balanced out fine.

I'm sure you will have a blast once you get her up.

I'm still busy painting the house and taking care of kids, but getting there

Next will be to ass metal tape for hatches & the odd panel line here and there, then paint.
I've always like the look of the yellow nose birds from the 361st FG. I think I'll be going for the scheme of E2-S.
Personally, I like the P-51D, but there are soo many ARF's of the plane out there that I've avoided it like the plague, but like I said, the price was right, so here goes.

Next steps After the paint was to add "Major" brand .60 size decals, and cut out the numbers and letters from black vinyl.
I've also added black stripes to the bottom, and white stripes to the top.
You can see in the last pics that I've repainted the pilot and in the next pics, have redone the cockpit. [8D]

A lil' yellow paint to the nose, and she's already looking 100% better than stock!
For whatever rediculous reason, this ARF didn't come w/ exhaust stacks, but perhaps that's a blessing, as I'll end up making some, that look better.
After that will be the panel lines and weathering.
I've got some LADO retracts I throw in...And if it were'nt for my crazy busy business travel schedule, she'd be ready in a week, but i'll be gone for a week or two next week.
So more pics then. [8D]

I'm using 3.5" robart wheels so, there was nevera chance of them fitting, I've modified the wells and reinfoced the modified ribs.
I'm using the "LADO" retracts on this bird and they work GREAT!
She's getting closer to beinmg finished. I still need some exhaust pipes, and gear doors, a bit of weathering and to do the final flat, clear coat.

Well, here she is with still a few details to go on her. (see last post)
She's not scale, but close enough for most club members to appreciate.
Depending on my work schedule...I may maiden on Sunday.

Am sure its a revival, but how did it fly after all?

All this greatness, but what happened after all?
Sent you a IM and no response...
