Nice, Chic. Mine's the same, except I'll have a red chin. I'm making color chips w/Testor's Model Master paint and taking them to Home Depot for a computer match.

Dawg Lovers....
Got me all fired up with this build, so went to look in my archives of Planes to Build... So I find
I have a set of Roy's Qtr. Scale Plans for the B. D. but sadly I have suffered the loss of one of the three plates...Probably during a shop move. Anyway it is the plate 3 of 3 which is or was the H. Stab and the other templates such as f. formers and such ! The plans I have are dated July of 93.
Yup, me bad [] I thought that I read here that there are 4 plates now ......... maybe R.V. has redrawn them ?
Am thinking that maybe the 1/5th sized Dawg is more to suited to my llife style now. So may have to give Roy a call and see what's up.
BTW: The book that is mentioned is out of print but the current price is $ 245.00 at a couple of places on the internet. Also found this in my search for three views I came upon this at the EAA site. Just a point of interest. WOW for 47 years !

Hope to join you here when I get more up to date on the plans and such....

Hello everyone
A beautiful work you are doing here.
One question a little off-topic but here is the best source of information.
I have the opportunity to achieve plans of Marutaka Cessna Birg Dog 1/5 scale, but I do not have any information on the quality of these plans. My only knowledge is a Marutaka FW 190 A8 I built in the late'70s and still got it, perhaps because its maiden was 3 years ago.
What is your opinion, it's worth trying this project or the design of planes is very old and out of scale.
Thanks for your answers.

From what I've seen of Marutaka kits they have a fairly scale outline, but the kits themselves are pretty labor-intensive, with a lot of shaping to achieve the final results. I had a set of P-38 plans once, and they looked like they would have made a good plan to scratch-build from if you had a lot of building experience. At the time, I lacked that experience, so I got rid of them.
They (the Marutaka plans) might be a nice thing to hang on the wall and admire, but I think a set of Vailly's plans would be easier to build from.
GSnut-If you're talking about "The Lovable One-Niner" book, I feel very lucky indeed to have gotten my copy directly from Minard Thompson for $35.
I'm starting to get drawn back to the workshop. I sometimes "hear" my wings, lying on the messy workbench, saying, "sand me......sand me......sand me........

Ken
Thank you very much for your opinion and advice.
I'm going to get the Marutaka Bird Dog plans and I keep these for a future project.
I have the Pilot's Decathlon 1 / 4 scale plans that I found out that you bought built. I looked for years these plans and thanks to a good person in England I got. I will begin the Pilot Decathlon first.
My inclination for such plans is because I started in this hobby in the 70s building Pilot and Marutaka kits, among others.
Sorry for the off-topic.

I hope the sound coming from those wings gets louder and louder and the only way it will stop is when that 220 sandpaper starts stroking those surfaces. Glad to see you back, remember your everyone elses motivator. Remember, you started all of this. Chic

RE: 25% Cessna L-19/0-1 Bird Dog build
Hey, Dawg lovers. I just got word that I'll be getting one of Roy's 1/4 scale L-19 kits cut by PCK.
After reading several of the entries by some of the more prolific builders, I came to the realization that I will have to stick to the plans, parts and details given within Roy's original design. If any significant changes are made, I would not be reviewing his design or Larry's kit, but rather whay I did to change things. If, however, safety related change has to be made, it will be done in the interest of model longevity.
I'll be doing it up like the one in the photos that flew into Lake Wales Airport last weekend just to see the models at Frank Tiano's Monster Planes.
I may use a 50cc twin on this one and I would like to know how wide the Vaillencourt cowl is in the neighborhood of the spark plug locations.
The engine I want to use is 9.25" wide at the plug boots.
Thanks.

Well, I grabbed my DAWG's cowl and measured my G45 from the prop back plate to about the beginning of the cylinder head, about 3 1/2". I then measured that same distance from the front of the cowl, 3 1/2" in in toward where the twins' cylinder heads may be. I then put a balsa piece across the cowl. The stick measures 9" Not sure how much prop shaft you have between the cylinders and the prop back plate. Your judgement call. Hope the photo helps a bit. Chic

RE: 25% Cessna L-19/0-1 Bird Dog build
Dick, I don't think any of the current 50cc twins will fit inside the cowl without cutting a hole for spark plug clearance on each side. There are pics elsewhere on this thread of a Roto 50 in a 1/4 VaillyDog, and while it is a nicely done installation and the visual impact is minimized, the plug boots are clearly visible.. There may be one of the newer Chinese-built clones that would fit, but most seem to have the spark plugs either sticking straight out from the head, or angled up, which then interferes with the top surface of the cowl. I did a lot of looking earlier on, because I thought the sound of a twin would be more appealing than a single. Unfortunately (or fortunately, since it's a reliable engine) I went with the single cyl. G-45. Possibly, adding a longer, custom made prop hub which would allow the engine to sit further back, would work.
I'll be interested in your take on building this plane. I hope you'll post some pics on this thread. Now I really got to get off my duff and get busy. Can't let all these builders finish ahead of me

I have been looking at your Pic of the cowling. Noticed the mounting tabs on the inside surface. Please explain how your cowling is installed. Thanks!

Thats right Ken, you started this whole mess, you should not be the last one to finish so get off of that duff as you say. Ok, Broke but Leary, I wanted to mount the cowl without any unscale like screws sticking out around the perimeter of the cowl. So I installed the tabs at four places on the cowl that did not interfere with anything, batteries, servo, control linkage, engine mounting box, etc. I then tapped the hole locations with 4-40 bolts/blind nuts. I take it on and off through the air intakes in the front of the cowl. Works great. Hope that helps. Chic

Thanks Chic!- My DAWG is still in the box. Interested in some major details before I get started. I to would like to have my cowl attached without any screws that show from the outside. Like your idea , it's great. Do U have any Pic's showing the
tabs with the 4-40 nuts? Roger

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question- Nice Pic's - Your cowling attached is 5 Star- how I would like mine to look when I get there! But no - I meant any Pic's U might have as to the location of the female tabs the cowling tabs attach to .

Roger, the original cowl mounting blind nuts were installed on the fuse sides that extended past the firewall. I initially used that approach but after seeing the bolts stick out like a sore thumb, I mounted hardwood blocks in the same location only facing forward. I installed blind nuts into the blocks and tabs on the cowl, and presto, no more ugly bolts that were not too scale. Chic

Hi Chic
Thanks for those additional Pic's. Great method to maintain scaleing. Thankyou again. Ken and you are doing a great job
on the DAWG. Showing us newbies how to do it, please keep it up....
