Your bird is looking good.

RPRCBuilder brought his L-19 out today and me and another friend put two flights on her. We conducted a stall test today because there is no wash out in our wing. The plane was slowed down well below a normal approach speed while adding elevator before the right wing dropped and it entered a right spin[X(]. Not sure of the rudder coordination, because not having a ball to step on to determine yaw would lead to a uncoordinated stall that would result in the plane rolling on it’s back rather than just having a coordinated stall where the nose falls through clean.

Both landings were conducted with a west crosswind. One landing was to a slow touchdown where the left wing dropped upon touchdown, and the second I kept the speed up and needed to lean on the aileron and rudder to maintain the runway heading. Either I would take as opposed to the option.

Otherwise we had a great time!!

Thanks for that fight report and happy things went well for you. I see your grass is brown also like mine this time of year. We had a very warm Saturday also but I painted a friends airplane with some left over K&B epoxy paint. Remember that stuff?

My Bird Dog flies ok but it is a plane I wouldn't want to get too slow next to the ground and the next one would have wash out in the wings if I was doing another one.
The flaps cause a severe pich-up and drown trim needs to be programed into the transmitter and even at that, any change of motor power will up set that. I also have a Hanger 9 C-182 and with the programed down trim it is a very enjoyable plane to land with full flaps unlike my Dog.

Flt Leader and MX240, so very glad to hear that you are both having success even without the washout. Not sure I would have been able to pull off the survival techniques you both used to get those "DAWGS" back home. Thanks to Firebar, I now have washout and hope that on the day of my maiden, I'll see the effect of building as directed. Smile. Yes, Redtail those of us that have built and flown this bird think some built in wash out in the wings are essential for safe flite and enjoyment of this plane. I am not going to do it this winter but if my plane survies next summer warbird events I am going to tear off the balsa sheeting and redo the wings from ribs up with plenty of wash out in both. I have never had a plane this touchy with flaps as this one. And I know I am balanced right at the C/G. I moved both ailerons up but not sure if it helped a lot.

Sorry for the lose of your Dad and not to belittle your lose but I can tell you after loosing my Dad in the early eighties nothing compares to loseing a son at thirty three.
But, I really feel for all those parents that their son or daughter are killed by enemy action a long ways from home.

I to am going to discuss the option of a second wing set build. This plane is to nice a subject to not add the recommended washout for added low speed stability.

Concerning the flap deployment situation; be prepared to retract them once deployed during your test hops. It may be beneficial to test hop during a higher wind day so your first landings can be better accomplished with no flaps.

An approach to landing holding forward stick just does not seem right.[X(]

This one also required quite a bit of elevator down trim mix when flaps are deployed, but I never flew a full scale that did not require down trim when landing either.

Regardless this is an eye catching great airplane to fly.

Questions:

1. What powerplant are you running? We have a BME-58 on this one.

2. What is your weight? Ours is around 28 pounds.

Right on Warbird, I agree with all you said.
Mine is also 28 # with about 3-4 of that as added lead to the fire wall. Way more then I ever dreamed it would need.
I have a DLE 35 in mine with a 19-8 prop.
Not enough I know but I wanted it too all fit.
Really, the plane has scale take offs and flight.
Requires 75% power to fly around.

And yes I did do my test flight on a 20-22 MPH day. Matter of fact it was windy enough it blew the wing off the table while putting it together that day.
I sure was glad as when I tried the flaps for the first time at 40% power the nose went almost stright up. Even at idle it was too much.
Second flight with added transmitter down trim added I still didn't have enough down trim so another landing without flaps.
I don't understand why this plane is so touchy with flaps.
Later this year I had a small accident when I added a little power with full flaps and the plane piched up.
Took the cabin area out.
Sure not like my other flap planes for sure.

Received my full wood PCK kit last week. Can't say enough about Larry's quality and attention to details. All the wood is first class with one exception. I started on the fuselage and got it to the stage that I needed the tail feathers to establish control routing etc. Put it aside and started on the horizontal stab. Found that the leading edge, made from 1/2 inch balsa, was badly warped and twisted. Don't think this is Larry's fault. He just did it like the plans said to do it. I am no expert on laser cutting, but my experience leads me to think that in order to cut 1/2 inch balsa, they must use very soft thus brittle material. When I tried to pin the leading edge down flat, it simply snapped. Really think these pieces should be made from 1/4" sheet and laminated. I called Larry with the problem and he is going to replace them. (no questions asked) I did not ask him to replace the leading edge of the vertical fin, I just made them from two pieces of 1/4" sheet.
I found that it is very difficult to allign the fuselage when it is built up off the board. Straight, level and square all at the same time is tough.. Worked and worked and I think I got it OK.. Fred123

I remember reading something about fullscale birddogs that they needed to hold alot of down elevator with full flaps. Mine was the same way. I made many flights and had alot of fun slipping mine in on landings. I did find that 1/4 flap on take off helped it track better.

While I am waiting on the replacement horz. stab. Leading edge, I decided to start on the fin and rudder. I think that using the tapered posts as supplied by PCK might be a little difficult to get them symmetrical and straight. I decided to remake them rectangular and sand the taper in after sheeting. This would let me pin them to the board, with spacers under the trailing edge (rudder) or the leading edge (V. fin). I installed the first sheet while on the board, and the remaining sheet off the board.

I got Vaillys 1/4 plans and added 12% to get a 120" and I'll cut the kit myself,I'll put a 50cc twin in,that should be enough plus they are ment for a twin.

I used 4/40 brass inserts in about 5 places across the front and the same at the rear of the front piece. I inserted inserts into a wooden block located an inch or so behind the leading edge to attach the curved part of the skylight. Looks like it will be an easy on and off. Chic

My E-powered Bronco is still going strong. Sounds like you have a winner with the Rimfire. I really like how my 1/3 scale Bird Dog flies. You will love this one.

will be using Digital servos on 6 volt of course for the holding power. have a 133 oz on the rudder and will be using 200 oz on the ele & ail's,, but the flaps take a lot of load on this bird any ideas. high 200's maybe like to stay with standard size, the 133 and 200 are standard size.. now to order the cockpit kit..

rigrandy......i have the spectrum A6010 servos at 100in/oz on all my flight controls on mine and they handle the load very easily..200 and above would be way overkill
