yellow spitfire landing gear
OK I need advise from some flyers of Yellow Spitfires... It is time to mound my landing gear and I talked to some people that say that I should tip the gear forward off of the rear beam mound a 1/8” to stop nose over’s… The question is do I need to do that???

RE: yellow spitfire landing gear
It will help a little to shim the gear forward. I just take a piece of 1/8 inch ply and sand the leading edge to a point. This piece just sits on the rear landing gear rail. You can just screw your landing gear bolt through the new spacer.
Another thing that will help the nose over tendencies is to cg your Spitfire at 5.75 inches back. This is just outside the manufactures recommended setting (I think) but I've had three of these and this is where they fly the best.

Where in MN are you? We fly out at Tri Valley in Rosemount and down in Owatonna MN. There should be 7 or 8 of us with yellow spits flying this summer.

RE: yellow spitfire landing gear
Thanks Dave,
I’ll try that and see if I can get everything to fit right... I going to be running a solo three blade prop so a nose over on landing is something I could do without. I fly out of Rich Valley R/C just out of Hasting. It would be fun to have a squadron of spits flying this summer. Are the pictures of your Spits??

RE: yellow spitfire landing gear
Hey Steve,
I know where Rich Valley is but haven't been out there ever. Our group of "warbird" flyers try to get out to Tri Valley every Tuesday night during the summer. Depending on schedules, rain etc. we may change it up week to week, but for the most part we are out there every Tuesday. Come on by and introduce yourself anytime..........
These are/were my spits. The one with the panther on it "UM G" is the first one I built. Still flying in the hands of Tom Steinmueller now. Power is a G-45. The brown/green one belongs to Kirk Hall. The lighter camo one "BI B" was built by Wayne Siewert for Top Gun in the early '90's. I was somewhere around the 8th owner. It had a Quadra 52 on it when I owned it. Phil Schwartz now has it down in Owatonna with a G-45 up front. It was flying once when the wing departed the fuselage. Jeff Q. rebuilt it and I ended up with it after it changed hands a few more times in-between. I flew it as my first yellow spitfire until I snapped it into some trees. I had it hanging on my wall in the garage for a few years and recently gave it to Phil. He just did a great rebuild on it this winter. The last one "AP D" was built by Dorin Luck, another Top Gunner as a practice plane. I still have that one today with a G-62 on it. I also have another yellow spit that Jeff Quesenberry built with a G-45 on it. He'll more than likely be getting that one back from me this spring if he still wants it.
These are hands down one of the best flying warbirds in this size/scale. While they are not a perfectly scale spitfire, they fit the bill for most people. You'll be hardpressed to find a nicer flying spitfire out there.
What engine are you going with? Have you picked out a color scheme yet?
Dave

RE: yellow spitfire landing gear
Just use a couple of 3/4 street 45's (copper) from your local hardware store, for the exhaust stacks.
G-62, 27 lbs
Gear shimmed forward
balanced at 5-3/4 from the leading edge at thre root.
Dont put anything behind the cg( like I did)
Build rudder out of balsa(like I didnt)
Build a light cockpit

RE: yellow spitfire landing gear
Dave they look great !!! Nice rebuild, I would not want to do a rebuild on that plane [] I here you about the tail heavy part I'm trying to get it all up front . I did use the ply tail parts but I put lighting holes in hoping that would help.. I going to use a Revolution 52 that was designed for the TF 51's..It will fit inside the noise which will be nice for the scale look
