RE: Byron Corsair Build
Finaly got back to work on the Corsair.
The flaps are all glued in, including the ailerons. Before I secure the rudder and elevators, I prepainted the leading edges, and the trailing edges of the emphanage. My canopy will be fixed with screws, so I needed to prepaint the blue on the canopy area before I put on the canopy, then I will mask the canopy, and paint the fuselage.
I am painting it Dark Sea Blue FS#15042.
Still have lots of small things to do, but hope to get the fuse painted first, then it can sit and cure while I work on other small bits. I have attached a couple of pictures, I think they are here, if not I will do it again.
Happy New year
Craig.

I have some pictures on how I did the rear spars on page 9 and 11. It was just my method but I think it worked very well.
I am using Model Masters enamel paint for my finish. This paint is great to work with and the finish on my P-47 turned out excellent. I will however go through a few bottles when I do all the painting.
Had some time this morning so I painted up the flap area at the trailing edge as well as the leading edges of the flaps. This will help when I paint so all the small areas will be done to include all the edges and crannies on the corsair.

RE: Byron Corsair Build
I placed the canopy on the fuselage, masked it off, and gave it a quick spray of aluminum. When it is dry I will burn the rivets into the paint as well as the plastic. When this is complete it will be ready for the paint colour, then the mask can be removed.

More progress on the corsair today.
The elevators and rudder are glued in, linkages to follow later.
I also made an access hatch for my fuel fill, air, and main power switch. Turned out pretty good. Just need to make the interior mounting blocks for those items.

Filling and priming went well. I will do the interior next, including the fake light.

I have been following your thread for some time and was finally able to procure a Byron Corsair kit of my own. This thread has been very informative and your work is incredible! I am in the early stages of my build, but am thinking ahead and getting all my supplies together for the build.
Where did you get the wing tip navigation light lenses? I would like to make mine with functional Navigation lights, but need lenses. Any help that you or other folks following this thread can provide in this area would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark

Not to sure if I will use magnets or a single screw, something for me to ponder.
Mark
I made the wing tip lenses. On page 14, you can see me cutting out the fibreglass light area. Before that I had previously glued in some balsa for the light location, this was done prior to putting the wingtips on.
I had my wife hold the heat gun to get the clear plastic warm, when it was plyable, I just pulled it over the wingtips and held it in location until it hardend up, then cut them for a fit. Wear gloves as you know the heat gun gets hot. Hope this helps.

I picked up the hinge from a store called Princess Auto. It is a long piece of piano hinge cut to the lenght that I needed, worked pretty good.
Rick
Not quite 24 and 7, but have been trying to get things moving. I keep adding to the "To do" list as I go.
G-62 is mounted, I made it modular so the whole firewall, and engine are removable. The fuel tank will also be on the flat ply that protrudes rearward from the firewall. I will also install my throttle servo here as well. It will be removed as one piece for easy maintenance etc.
The elevator booster tabs are completed, and work pretty good, happy with the results so far.
I have attached a few pictures.

I have plenty of hinge left for my next couple of projects. I am leaning towards the magnets, seems like a good option.
The paint I am using is Model Masters Enamel model paint. Dark Sea Blue FS# 15042.
Started on the servo for the throttle, located on the underside of the fuel tank. Just glued in the supports for the servo

Craig,
You must be an airbrush artist. What brush do you use with the MM paints? How much do you thin it?
You'll have throttle trim issues with the golden rod due to thermal expansion.
I suggest a cable to be more consistant. I run mine through the golden rod and fasten it to the servo & throttle arm.

RE: Byron Corsair Build
Decided to glass the firewall and the engine mounting plate. I used heavy cloth and finishing resin. Should seal the wood nicely, add some strength and clean it up a bit.

Craig,
I love your firewall concept. It's clean and functional.
Two questions:[ul][*] Are you looking to build a dummy engine? If so, which one?[ul][*] The Top Flite ABS engine?[*] The FT cast resin engine?[*] Another source? (Homebuilt?)
[/ul][*] Are you concidering baffelling to cool the cyclinder?
[/ul]After viewing your work I need to strip mine down and repaint it to use your techniques!

Dummy engine will probably be the last thing done. I will fly it first to see how she works. As for the baffelling I will definately baffle the head. Need to make sure it is well cooled.
I got the fuel tank installed, throttle linkage in place as well. Attached the fuel line to the carb, and put my vent line on the firewall. Final vent location will be done after the cowl is fitted. All I need to do to remove the whole power pack is remove 6 bolts, disconnect the throttle servo, and remove the fuel dot. Should save plenty of time when maintenance is needed to be conducted. I also attached the main switch to the fiberglass sheet within the hinged door.
I will be routing my electrics next, and setting up the rudder and elevator servo, and placing in my airvalve and running my retract lines.

RE: Byron Corsair Build
I too thin mine to the consistancy of milk. The paint goes on very well, and it is easy to match the FS colours.
Hard to believe I started this thread 2 years ago.............Today, and still am plugging away.
Getting down to the shorts strokes as they say. Mounted the muffler and cowl. Had to cut a bit from the cowl, but it still will be fine. Airlines are all run, and the retracts are working fine. Linkages are in progress, takes time to get them set and working.
Need to clean the shop, as I have been doing one small thing after another, need to keep things clean and organized.
