RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
The stand offs are not the problem as I can machine up any length I need, the problem is the rear carby and the existing firewall, from the pick you will see that the carby sits thru the firewall, I set the engine 25mm further forward so that the engine prop shaft protrudes thru the front of the cowl 3mm, the carby sits right in the middle of the firewall, this will make throttle and choke linkages very difficult and access to the H/L needles for tuning............I'm sure I'll firge something out if I need to move the donk further forward to reduce the amount of lead required to balance.

Glad to see my thread has now been corrupted with the usual social banter that has "infected" pete's Jug build
These threads would be awfull dull without some laughs
Hey Bla Bla
I would not be letting my kids watch a show with a heli pilot with questionable sexual orientation and a cretinous kid who interfers with animals[sm=wink_smile.gif]
And as for Rolf Harris........we deported him back Old Blighty years ago....any bloke who wears a long trench coat with both hands firmly grasping his "middle leg" ...[X(].......alla jake the Peg.... is not for kiddies............and as for his wobble board.......don't get me started
Now then........ back to the Ttempest build

Alan,
come on mate we are implementing worlds best practice here, did you think you were exempt?
As for Skippy the bush kang a roota and the cast don't foget the pair of stuffed roo paws that magically appear and do all sorts of wonderouse things such as brain surgery, origami and assorted party tricks while skip goes tsk tsk in the background. Think she made it into a can of chum (dog food) in the end.
you also forgot the damn annoying score that goes with it. Der duma de dum de dum, darr da de dum de dump blah blah choke, spew vomit! [:'(]
I used to quite like Rolf and his paintings, makes you wonder about his mind set though, especially if you think in terms of live in australia, live in UK hmmm about a nanosecond D in my book.
Tempest? What Tempest? Is there a storm coming?
cheers
Peter

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
Well, you lot seem a happy bunch.
I was only recently talking with somebody about the idea of moving the family down under and taking up a short (ish) term residence.
Place called Surfers Paradise.... Southport was the location suggested. Ring any bells.
How's the flying in that area? Any F3A?
Pretty bloody strange actually as I when to Junior school in a place called Southport in England! Years ago.
How 'king weird is that?

Ring any bells what do you think?
Bring yer $$$ with you though if you think you are going to buy there.
SFA flying there, there is gold coast club but it is pretty crap. Best club close to there is LARCS, Logan Club.

No no epidosdes of Skippy on DVD...........just vivid memories of watching that rubbish after school in the senventies..............I do however have all the Get Smart episodes on DVD.......now that's a quality sit comm
Ok......... back on the subject of the Tempest, I now have cockpit surround sheeted, the canopy sliding rails installed, the canopy sliding beautifully and the fin glued in place. (pics to follow)
Preparing to join the tail surfaces to the fuse, I put an incidence meter on the horizontal stab and it was spot on at 1+ deg........bolted on the wing and that was another story.......2.5 + at the fuse (that's fine) but then 1.5 deg difference between the two at the start of the ailerons [>:] As the wing was already built when I bought the kit, that is the risk you take I suppose[&o]...........well aside from building a new wing from scratch I have not alot of options......trying to warp such a structure would be near ompossible and probably destroy the wing.........maybe I'll just dial in some compensating aileron trim .
Just when you think it's all going swimmingly...........[:@]

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
OUCH MATE
I'm not sure how you might go about fixing that problem to be honest. I'll ask a few of my peers up here for you but my initial thought is that you may need to remove the top sheeting. With that off the wing will twist quite nicely.
Drastic I know but if you try and fly like that you are going to run into tip stal problems. I think landings could be quite dicey.
not really something aileron trim can compensate for.
do you have the plans for it? Assume you got those.
Pics please especially of the cockpit rails. Tip for you. Do not glass over where the stab joins the fuz. Epoxy wood to wood. Otherwise the thin 3/4 cloth will just tear off, no structural strength in the way you were proposing to do it. I always glass after the stab and fin are attached.
Reminds me, I need to check all of the incidences on the Sea fury.[:-]

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
Thanks Pete.....
I realised that I will need to glass the stab after epoxying.......I was looking at an easier way to glass the horizontal stab before fixing to the fuse but will go with the traditional method.
Yep I have thought of removing the wing skin from the offending wing panel and resheeting.......I'm going to re-measure the incidence tonight and double check every thing (after I make longer rails for my incidence meter).
I have the plans so maybe build a new outer panel...Anyway much to think about.........I may just build a new wing and be done with it.....I'll post some pics of the canopy rails etc tomorrow aftr I wrestle the digi camera away from 'er in doors
BTW
get back to work and stop goofing off

You might try this method .I have never tried it but it could save you from building a new wing http://www.scaleaero.com/warpedwings.htm

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
Hi Alan,
The method posted by Winston above sounds like it would be worth a shot.
If it is any consolation when I built the Brian Taylor Tempest all those years ago, I made the mistake of building the wing ( I am sure it was straight ), then leaving it in the roof of the shed for over 12 months before getting it down and glassing it. I then finished the model and on the test flight had the sh*t scared out of me when it took full aileron just to stop it rolling!!!! Managed to survive that JUST!
I then cranked the ailerons over in the opposite direction. It still flew remarkably well. A tribute to the Tempest design I would say.
Needless to say I do not leave balsa structures sitting around unsealed anymore!!!!
Good luck with it.
Cheers
Mick

Hi Pete,
40m of 3/4oz cloth. If it is easier for you it can be 4 lots of 10m as it is for 4 of us.
Drop me a line on [email protected] to sort out the details.
Cheers
