Well with the tips sheeted on the top it is starting to resemble a Corsair wing.

The main tubes are now run for all my lighting, air lines, and servos. The coragated tubing is plastic and has a opening on one side that I can pull a wire or airline out of. I got this idea from David Jackson who I haven't heard from in some time. Heres the outer wing tip panels with the tubing run through them. I went through 15 foot of tubing for this project.

I spent the day yesterday removing the old oil coolers so I can start over and use different methods to get what I want. I glued in the wing tube sleeves and also sheeted the outer sections of the center section. I'll glue up some more sheeting tomorrow for the rest of the top of the wing that gets sheeted. The area between ribs #6 and # 8 will have to be planked per plan instructions. This will help with the curves.

I got in touch with Bob and he is sending me a bunch of pictures, 3-views, internal views, and other documents on the F4U-7 Corsair I'm replicating. Thanks again for the link! I got some more 3/4"x3"x36" balsa that I planed down to 5/8" for the LE where the new and improved oil coolers will be. Also here is a picture of the oil coolers round canister looking more 3-D. I still have to paint it flat black on the pipe.

Having never built a Giant Warbird before I didn't realize how much balsa I was going to need. I have probably ordered 5 times from Balsa USA for more wood. Anyway I am making slow but sure progress on the top of the wing. I also epoxied in the hold down plates and the 2 W3A ribs that line up with the sides of the fuselage.

rack,

I don't think he had a set of plans for your Tiger Models Corsair and maybe thats whats wrong. He has all of the plans sheets having anything to do with the Don Smith Corsair. I will give him a call tomorrow just to check if our lengths of the legs come out the same. How are you going to lengthen yours. Wouldn't it be better to ship them back to Darrell so he could do it for you. After all he is the one that built them. Just a thought. The Waco is looking real good.

It all started in January and with a pile of wood, glue, and a set of Don Smith plans for the 1/4 scale F4U-1D Corsair. Now I'm making it an F4U-7 French Navy Corsair. I thought I'd give you a sneak peak at what it looks like before and up to the present. This is the first time I have put all the parts together to see it for my self. There are a lot of pictures but I am darn proud of my Corsair. Also just for the record it is nose heavy by quite a bit. Has anyone experienced this before on a Corsair? Sorry about the duplicate picture!!!

rack,

I talked to Darrell yesterday and he said that he was working with you on the problem. Thats encouraging. Him and I discussed the length of my struts and they are the same. He said that a set of plans would of been helpful for him on yours. If he had the center section then I don't know what went wrong. At least you have had yours in your hands. I am waiting on mine. He has a few other things to finish up before they will be ready to ship. Then it's just talking the other half into another large exspence.

I worked on duplicating the engine in the Corsair I'm replicating and had to go to ACE to get some copper tubing, electrical connectors, and solid black wire. I bent the tube around the front of the crankcase where it is on the scale plane and then used a little putty to smooth it out when it cures. I had to cut the electrical conector in half so it was the same size on both ends. It fit the spark plug perfectly and the wire. I drilled a hole in the tubing to insert the wire and cut the insulatiopn on the ends. Then I just glued the wire into the connector and the tubing. It will all be primed when it's sanbded and smooth and it will get a coat of flat black. The spark plugs will be white and the connector will be red. It looks pretty ugly now but when it's all done it will look good. Here is a pic of the engine with one plug wire done.

Well I finally got the canopies and it was definitely worth the wait. Graham did a wonderful job with the aluminum riveted frame. Here are some pictures. Oh yeah he even sent me a real nice Polo shirt. What a Guy! I think I might just make the 2nd canopy stationary now because if I screw up the 1st one cutting it I don't want to chance it on the second one. They don't judge on that anyway. You will be able to see the pilot and interior without having it open. After talking to some people like Darrell at Sierra, stationary might be the best way to go. He said he has seen many canopies blow off when in flight and said if I do anything just make it hand operated and have tiny screws on each side to hold the bubble secure when it's shut and going to be in flight.

After looking at the canopy on my plane I noticed with the new canopy that I'm going to have to lower the rear slides. I already lowered one side a little over 1/2" and will follow with the same tomorrow.

Your corsair really looks great. I am picking up alot good ideas from your thread and will be applying some to my plane once I get back to it.

Thanks for the compliment David. Rack, here are a couple close ups of the canopy. I think there stampted but then on some they look real. Which ever they are they are cool and the canopies look great. Thanks Graham!!! Anyway I moved both of the rear slide rails down for this canopy and it looks much better. Also I finished with my plug wires and painted the engine the final color. Now I just need to paint the spark plugs white and the caps red or orange.

Gibbs

rack, my camera is cheap and dosen't make a clear close up so this is the best I can do with it.

After getting my documentation papers back from staples and having them blown up 200% it was obvious that the bump just behind the pilots head on the cockpits rear bulkhead was curved and not tall enough. I have been working on that all day and just finished applying a thin coat of putty to make the higher bump smooth. It is also supposed to be a straight line from where it starts to rise to the end. My previous one had a curve to it so it looks awful. I painted my spark plugs today but missed some spots and when I took the picture to post it I noticed them. The paint is put away so I'll fix it when I paint the red leads.

Harley,

That thing is soooo fassst that I didn't even see it. Boy I bet your proud. What engine do you have in it? Are those CJ retracts? I finished my engine all but the decal. Here it is. Now back to building and stop tinkering. Every once in awhile I just need a break and when I do I tinker with details.
