Please don't. I can do this just fine with the help from others. Go bother someone else on their thread. I don't know why you are so interested in this build anyway. You say it won't ever fly so why bother. No need to answer just GO AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!![:'(]!!!

Shes looking good ! Keep on building, I can see the potiental of a great plane. Do you have the fuse yet, any info on that ?
And Rack, we all could do without your comments. If all your going to do is make comments like that, then you don't even have to bother with this thread. If you have a comment. it could be reworded, theirs plenty of sensible words in the english language. As far as idiotic comments go, you've already got that one covered, just stop looking for trouble ; thats not what RCU is about. BTW - I know you can help, but, in a different way would be recieved much better. Keep going on her, Barry !

Thanks Girly Girl. I've got the retract rails in for the left side now and all thats left is to drill the bolt holes and see how she looks right side up. Everything indicates that it should be level or witin a 1/32" in the distance between the gear. It's hard to make thing perfect on two sides. I'll post pic's after I've got her on her feet tomorrow. As far as the fuse goes it is still at the welders and being worked on in between his work projects for big companies. You can't push perfection and when it's almost free.
Barry
PS: Oh yeah my shop heater has the gas to it now and on the low setting it's 75 degrees in there. I have to turn the blower and all but the pilot off once in awhile so it cools down in there. Thats pretty good when it was 31 degrees outside today.

There in and I like em. It took 3 weeks talking to Darrell about how he wanted them but he finally approved. Here they are in all their glory. I'm waiting on ribs to use as doublers and then there will be hardwood triangular stock under them. Obviously the doublers will go on the outsides of ribs 6 and 7 on both side of the wing. Since the wing's center section that 65" will be permanently attached to the fuselage I had to mount the servo and valve out side of the fuse area so I can use an access hatch to get to it. Now I'm waiting on the 8" wheels from Darrell.

Winston,
I still have to do a little tweeking on the gear and then when the wheel gets here see how it is going to fit. If I were you I would just call him and ask him about your gear. He has seen that they fit so I'm sure he will send them when he gets them put together. Here are a bunch of pictures of the center section sitting on her feet finally. Here ar the pic's, how do the look ?

I'll try again. My eyes are starting to cross. Everytime I look at them they look different. Do they both look the same to everyone else???

I used my laser level to verify that everything was right and there are only tiny differences. Not enough to change. Here are pictures of what I did. Please ignore the stupid repeat pictures. I must be getting tired. It must be time for an ice cold Bud.

Even though I am signed in for this beautiful build thread I got dropped from it. I'm just signing in again. Please keep it going. Your skills should be the envy of everyone. I do have a couple of simple questions. What adhesive did you sheet the wings with? Was it an alaphetic resin? And, I can't find the posts where you sheeted the concave portion of the dihedral joint. Thanks again for such a great build. Dan.

Dan,
I've used Great planes Pro wood glue for everything except planking. There are to many curves to wait and hold every 2" wide plank. The gull or dihedral section of the wing I kinda skipped over a little but it is planked. It was another area where sheeting wouldn't work. I went per the plans on that. I'll show you a couple wic's of the planking. It all ran tip to tip as the sheeting did. I had to cut the strips from 1 1/2" to 2" to be able to get the bend. I also soaked the planking in my bathtub with amonia and water mixture. Then so the CA wouldn't gel I rinsed them real good with steaming hot water that helps it's flexability even more. It is planked from rib #8 to rib #5. I hope these pictures show you what I'm talking about as far as planking.
Thanks for the compliment,
Barry

unless your using 2.4 running plastic air lines inside of plastic conduit is poor practice , you can create static interference and cause glitches

Barry,
The Corsair looks great! It's about time that I get back to mine and since I see that you've received your gear, I am even more motivated. I have still not talked to Darrell about my gear, but will try to reach him Monday of next week.

I am using 2.4 with this expensive of a plane. I just haven't figured out which JR radio to go with yet. David, it's nice to have you back. Since my last post of pictures I changed the bolts and nut around on the scizzors that allowed me 3/8" more clearence. So I removed the back screws and raised it up. with the new tilt I think I moved the axle forward about 1" or more by the time the 3/8 is multiplied by the distance from the bottom to the top which is 11 3/4". Now it is a lot closer to being scale with the axle at lease close to the LE once I finish sand it that is. Here is a picture of one tilted forward and done and the one in the background where they were. The next is with them both tilted forward. All that left is to put in screws and after testing the wheel fit which will be a piece of cake now I can epoxy everything in place along with the rib doublers and triangular stock.

RE: 1/4 Scale F4U-1A Don Smith Plans Build
Barry,
Looking outstanding! I have a long way as I am just trying to the formers framed. Did you have as much trouble as I am I mean with the lazy blown up plans makes the build much more time consuming. I had a heck of a time getting the wing saddle to sit corectly with the plans. Also you glue joints are fantastic any sugestions? I am using Titebond2 which as I was told is the same as GP glue. How did you smooth your joints I am guessing maybe a qtip. Anyways just got the formers on the left side squared and tacked with c/a to which I plan to go over with the Titebond and would love any tips. I did contact Sierra via email and have yet to hear anything back I guess it's the "squeaky wheel gets oiled" principle with those guys. Keep up the good work and I will try to post a few pics as soon as I have something that resembles the structure of an aircraft -Josh

Josh and Dan,
Thank you for the kind words. As far a glue joints I just keep a box of 100 epoxy brushes on hand and after gluing I brush off the extra glue. Then if I feel picky I get the brush wet with warm water and go over it again. You will be surprised how many brushes you will go through. Everything was a challenge on this thing. Just remember thats what Evercoat putty and Z-Poxy with microballons are for. The wing saddle went in but it was a bear. I had to cut the notches in one side of the formers deeper or something like that. Just keep going and always think 3 to 4 steps ahead. Don't build yourself into a corner. Plan and Plan somemore. I have made so many do overs I could of built 2 of these by now if the plans had only been right. At least I'm on the right track with the retracts now.
Good luck Josh and yours will probably come out nicer than mine,
Barry

My little trick,
When I put my gear in and it is a scratch build there aren't any parts that position the gear rails for you so I tape off around the area to be primed and then spray it so I won't have to count on pencil lines that aren't accurate. The pencil line is never right where the top and the ends of the rail goes. This way it's all painted except for the area that the rails go. I have found this to be much more accurate. Since it's all been leveled and test fitted now when I take them out all I have to do is epoxy them and clamp them in their respective positions. Then hand tighten the screws just as another guarantee that they are exactly where they were. After hand tightening all the screws I use a ratchet and tighten them down. Here is what I mean.

After moving the rails up in the rear the axles sit right under the LE of the wing where they should be. I finally have them right where they should be. I'm done moving them anymore.

My new field box for just my Gas Warbirds! I still need to install the power panel but then it will be ready for next season. It is 12"x24"x10" on the sides and the end is 12"x14" for the handle. Sometimes I just need a break from building Corsairs!!! I thought about building and selling this box to those that need a big box and don't want to carry it everywhere. Rolling it is very easy and even easier on the ole back. What will be inside will probably weigh near 75lbs. Would anyone be interested if the price was right?
