Just got the me163 Im reading all the stuff and most say to change the cg to 6.25" at the wing fuse meet. is that about right. Im thinking that the os 55ax might have a new home. but I might even go with cheap hobby king electric set up< not sure but should be fun this spring. thanks

Mine is still flying at whatever CoG I had previously posted on this thread

I like mine being electric, and your right about the cheapness of the setup. I had been flying with 5000mah 5 and 6s setups but i recently have aquired 3600mah li-pos that will be heaps better. I don't need 30min flight times and I would like to see how it performs at the lighter weight.

Thanks

Put a little dubro plastic spinner on the front and it'll really clean up the airstream. I did one with german esque black/white half n half.
Here's mine in flight. 5s 5000 on a turnigy 500kv motor with 14x10 apc prop

I left the spinner off because the front cowling is my only cooling inlet at the moment, I also
have 3 add. 3/4 in. holes in firewall to allow air to electronics, works well my batt. was barely
warm after 6 min. flight. I used dubro 4in. light wheels works better on grass, gear drops
nicely, CG at 6.25in and most settings as mentioned in this thread, flyes Great!!.

More details:
RTFW. 7 lbs.
Hyperion ZS4020-8/777kv, apc 13X8 prop(950W@71A)
ESC 80 amp exceed/opto
Batt. 2ea. hyperion in parallel 4S/2500/25C(5K)
2.4 Spektrum, Hitec 605 servos, 2s 800mah receiver batt., castle BEC.

Also incl. pick of my other German plane!!

Later, Allen

What I did for cooling air was put 3 small airscoops on the nose bottom section in the silver area and color matched them. I wanted the spinner in place myself, because I could see that in the air whereas the little scoops are invisible.
With the 5s 5000 I get about 12 mins

I'm looking for a alum. spinner, don't trust plastic as motor rpm's are 10k+, I saw pics of
your scoops on this thread, I might try that.

Thanks, Allen

I havent had any issues with the dubro spinner at all.....but...my power setup isnt any where close to 10k rpm's ...much closer to 7500 loaded with the prop on it.
Your 777kv motor on a 4s battery is turning 12k UNLOADED, but with a prop on it, its considerably lower.....but still probably 9000-9500. I dont fault you for being carefull. You can get an aluminum spinner from dave brown in the size you need. Go to dbproducts.com..much cheaper then truturn and they are just as good.

Well it's been a great summer, well over 50 flts on the komet, no damage, a few broken props!!, installed gyro on rudder, use gain mode for takeoff only,
off in flight, set at 80% gain takeoff a lot easier, also installed a dubro servo saver(springs) on rudder pushrod at servo arm, saves the servo gears on
rough landings, flew it 5 times at EWEEK(Triple Tree Aerodrome/ AKA Joe Nall field), was able to make long aproach and tailwheel 1st landings, that field
is so smooth, the plane slid another 30-50 feet after landing, I also installed heavy duty urethane tape along skid to protect paint and large dubro wing
skids, no damage on landings, even at rough fields!!, I'm attaching video of one of this summers E-fly-ings, this field was rough tail bounced a lot, but had
a great time!!, timeline 7:50 takeoff, 8:35-9:00 some passes and landing.

I like this plane so much, I have a second one sitting in shop!!, it will be recovered/painted in the RED version with more power!!, BTW the 1st one was
speed gun tested at 80mph on level pass with 8 mph crosswind.

Keep them flying, Allen BTW Texas RC dorpped the price on these

This thread kind of died, I'm still quite excited with this plane, I started the build of the red version(paint fuselage, recover wings),
got the wings done, still sanding on fuselage, it has a very hard clearcoat.
Going with the new E-flite Power .52/590KV, max amps 65, max watts 1650, tested with APC 12X6 on 6S/40C ,1375WP, 61.17AP,
I think it will have plenty of power!!.

Hey all,

Thread's not dead. I have completed mine thanks to all the build tips and will balance it tonight. I will post pics as well. I am excited, this should be a fun plane.

Mines running a 500kv motor on 5s with a 14x10 apc. Your may find it hard to break ground using a lower pitch prop such as a 6 and the thrust generated by a 12 diameter may not help matters either. This plane requires a snot load of thrust PLUS reflex on the elevons to get it to leave the ground along with usually holding full up elevator. Once in the air though, it'll fly fine, even at half throttle.

That prop/battery combo was only a "test", all I had on hand was 4S+6S batt's, it felt a lot more powerfull than my other Komet setup, wich is aprox 1000WP on new 4S/30C/5000 batt.,
I usually ease the power in while holding full ellevator and come of the ground at 3/4 throttle with no issues, I found that full power takeoff induces quite a bit of torque roll, plane would
roll almost 90 deg.!!, I also use high rates for takeoff/landing, the controls get weak if you don't, it takes longer to get airborne than my other planes, but i have aprox. 800ft, another thing
I noticed is that the gear falls off immediately with this technique, I had the gear hang up several times on full power takeoffs, required reducing speed and pushing nose down to drop.
I'm going to try a 12X8 and if it stays around 70 amps(75 burst) static, I'll use it. The 12X6 will have more static thrust, 12X8 more airspeed.

On the video link on post #210 around 7:50 time, you can see that the field was a little rough/bumpy, making it hard to keep tailwheel down as there is
no way of holding the tail down, because you need some speed for the elevons to start working!!, I was going to turn around for a second try, but when
they called "landing", I decided to get in the air fast, full up and full power, you can see the resulting torque roll in a split second, fortunately this had
happened before so I was ready, at my regular flying field is non issue, is very smooth and 800ft, so I can make a longer takeoff and apply power
slowly, with better results. My rudder gyro set on gain holds plane fairly straight, I turn off IMD after takeoff.

I wanted to thank all that provided very useful info here on the FB / BH / TX / CY Me-163 Komet arf !

It flies very well, quite docile, almost like a nice glider

Here's a video of mine (second flight, after maiden earlier in the day), more details & pictures under my blog ("Herb") on RC Groups . Thanks again!

I have began to trick the cockpit out a little, nothing to fancy just a pilot and a picture of the original cockpit , like was done before. I need to figure out the cover over the bullet proof glass? It really seems to be a major characteristic of the original and will help appearance from a short distance. Thanks to all for the help . I might just try the rocket motor, but at the same time I am thinking about just using some kind of smoke bomb. This is because Kahlog said the rocket motor doesnt really increase the thrust at all so save some money and maybe the smoke will last for most of the flight. I have a turnegy 42-40 750kv and two nanotech 4s 2200 mah batts to make a 8s monster? I know that the motor is on the small side of the size range, but the less weight might just counter balance it. I really want the plane to rock. This could all be changed after the maiden . PS Im not looking for long flight times maybe five good minutes or so. thanks

I picked up one of these at a swap meet a couple weeks ago. Converted it to electric with a 400Kv motor on 5s. Got a short flight yesterday and it looks like all the CG, and throw info, listed on this thread is pretty darn close. Canopy came of so I cut the flight short. I need to work on the the latch system a bit. BTW, Texas R/C Planes has got some red 163s coming in a few days, and they also have parts for them. The one I got was glow powered, so I ordered a new cowl from them.

Got decasl from Callie, great quality and fast shipping!, just $18
shipped, got all gear installed today, balanced at 6 3/8 in from L/E,
my other komet is balanced at 6.5 , but I think this is good for 1st
flight, final weight exactly 8 lbs.

Power System:

E-flite Power 52(590kv)
ESC Hobby Wing F/F HV 80 amp
Batt. Sky Lipo 6s/40c/4400
Prop, APC 12X8

My Power reading, Battery 15 min. off the charger, 65A/1650W.
good for 200W/lbs.

Love how It came out, test flight sunday, WKYP, Allen

On these new ones I have a question. Is the canopy tented? In your pictures it sure looks like it.

No is clear, the black cockpit frame may make it look tinted, this is custom repaint of original kit.
