Like Chad, I also made my own H stab and elevators. Much lighter and no waves:

Interesting mods there on the tail section, sure looks like real nice work too...

I also have a new Yellow Spit project for myself on the way, my one will be arriving about the same time as Brad's. And just to be different I will be installing a Saito 220 in my Spity. Not sure quite what to expect performance wise from this combo but Iam quitely confident she will fly extremely well. I also have a nice set of Glennis Spitty wheels already on hand....

Probably going to go with PS-853 colours also- http://www.rolls-royce.com/history/o...w/spitfire.jsp

I would be curious to here what pilot figures some of you guys are using or planning to use, pilots are one of my pet peaves and have to look the part and be the right size and scale...

Cheers- Marty

I'm hearing you Marty,
Here is a thread I started about pilots.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_39..._1/key_/tm.htm

I will probably use parts of the pilot supplied with the cockpit i got off Leo and make the rest. This is if he looks about the right size when i get to mock-up stage.

Here is a link I found here on RCU with a bit of information and some darn nice pictures.
Just to keep the juices flowing.

Here are some links that I am saving for the rest of the build. It is by no means the end list. Just surfing.

Well Guys, I couldn't wait any longer so I went ahead and brought a 3W 55I from Model Design here in OZ.
After seeing '60's and '70's installed I thought the '55' would be a good compromise for power and fit. It has a rear carby and prop extensions are avaliable from Sierra. I also like the idea of the slanted exhaust manifold face that should make the exhaust stacks easier to confine in the cowl.

Last night I also ordered all my servos and 9 channel PCM receiver, reversing 'Y' lead for flaps, extension leads and heavy duty switches X 2.

I am thinking to keep things simple by just 'Y' leading two battery packs into my receiver and not using a power box. The Spitty will not be drawing that much power that I will need 'boosted' signals. Any thoughts on this?

Next is retract equipment to make my gear work.

Oh man talk about pumped!!!!!!!!!![>:]

I flew my YA Spit with a single battery for the Rx with no issues. I can't imagine the servos drawing all that much power. The plane isn't a 3D monster lol.

I alway run two pack in my big planes, (6 volts) A warbird doesn't mind carring around an extra pack.

See how she balances, if nose weight is required might as well go with the extra Rx battery. Pitty theres not a Keleco scale exhaust system available yet for the Yellow Spitty this would probably be worth considering for adding yet more functional balance weight in the nose...

Thunderbolt, do you just 'Y' lead them and go straight to your receiver?
(Obviously using two identical packs)

I use two batterys and two switches into one RX. If you don't have an open port just Y it off of any Channel. Preferably opposite side of the Battery input.

Or use a Battshare. (smartfly) They share packs. If one goes bad, it will eleminate it from the system and use the remaining pack. It also monitors them and bring them down together. This is what I was using and liked it alot, but if using 2.4 radios you can't BIND through them from the switch.

I tried a Battery Backer by Jo-Mar, but I didn't like the way it used one battery and swiched only if the main pack went bad or low. this ment your back up battery never really got used.

Cheers Mate, thats what I was going to do but what do you mean by opposite side of the batt. input?

Brad, On the RX you will have the Battery input. Usually the first port is Channel 1 and the last port is the battery. There is a buss bar that runs from CH1 to batt input. On a JR RX, throttle is ch1 or port one. the last port is Battery port. You would Y the other battery in to your throttle. It really not impairative that you do it that way. you could plug it in the any unused port but this way it spreads the load over the entire buss bar.
I guess that's the way I do it on my power hungry 3D planes, so I just keep the same setup on my warbirds.

Mark
Really appreciate the pictures. Will try my hand at building a muffler and see what turns out!! I imagine it's pretty loud. "Releasing the firewall" is not something I feel I want to do so I will check various engine oulines to see if one "fits" with just a shaft extension. I guess there is a lot to consider here in the engine department!!

regards

Len

Len,
Removing the firewall is really not a difficult task at all. In fact, you will be unpleasantly surprised at how easy it breaks free from the fuselage. So really, two purposes are served by this operation: One, you broaden your engine selection choices and, Two, you do a far better job at securing the firewall into the fuselage than what was done at the factory.. Good luck.

I concur with Mark here. Even if you don't move the firewall you will probably want to reinforce it with some strips of glass or something. The firewall in my kit was loose and only stayed in place due to the glue fillets on either side of it!

One other: The fiberglass wingtips I received with my kit were pretty flimsy. I bought some of that expandable foam in a can that is used as plumbing insulation, and filled the hollow tips with it. Much more rigid and remained very light. Just be sure NOT to put too much foam in because if you do, it will rupter the tips. Fill the tips about 20 to 25% and the foam will do the rest. Be sure to drill vent holes for the foam to escape from. When it cures, it is very easily sanded clean.

Just a quick thought Mark,
I am planning the clipped wing version so wont be using the wing tips but is there plans with the kit to show what I will need to achieve this?

I agree that the firewall is not hard to remove at all. I put a detailed instruction on how to remove it out on one of my web sites. You can find it at:

http://www.globaldialog.com/~spikes/

The Word Document is called: http://www.globaldialog.com/~spikes/...ns%20Rev.2.doc

I started by breaking it up in to smaller pieces with a large hole saw. Then you grab it with pliers and break the smaller pieces out. Not bad at all. Leo

My Mate and flying flying buddy has just become the sole Aussie distributor for Warbird Colours (colors) so my search for a paint system has come to an end.

http://www.warbirdcolours.net/default.htm

No appoligies for a free plug and helping hand for him to all of us here in Australia.
I'm sure any one of you who have imported it from the States has had great service over the years. It is just that this stuff is here now so postage times will be greatly reduced.

On ya Baz!!!
