I have two different plans for the built up horizontal stab. The first, as seen in the previous post by LINK, is built in half shells ala Brian Taylor and is designed for the guys that will be hand cutting their own parts. I have a second plan as seen below in which the stab is built in one piece on jig tabs and due to the complexity of some of the parts is really more suitable for those who want to have the parts laser cut. I am happy to provide a CAD laser cutting file with the plan. If you have an interest in either (or both!) just shoot me an email at [email protected] and I will reply with the files attached.

Hi, on Saturday I found out that a YA Spitfire with a 24oz tank, DLE 55, Xoar 21x10 prop will fly for 14.5 minutes at full throttle, my trottle servo a hitec 5085 burnt out and was stuck at full power, about two minutes into the flight I noticed I could not power back, I flew the remaining 12.5 minutes in continous left hand circles over the field, deadstick landing went well and made the runway, the Spittie glided with authority but the pucker factor was there, the pic is an older one, happy it all ended well and I'll get to fly this model again. cheers - ken

Does anyone have a spare canopy they would like to sell? Please let me know. I got a little too aggressive with the heat gun.

Thanks,
John

Finding a "spare" anything for this plane is very unlikely these days. For a canopy your best bet would be a Brian Taylor one from Traplet for the 1/5 MK IX spitfire, or the if you can find who's doing the Dave Platt kits now there is a 1/5th MK XII. That being said if you have a "spare" spinner - I'd be interested.lol.

Cheers.

Thanks Eric,

i do do not have one of those spinners but will keep my eyes open. I tried the Traplet website without luck. Looks like the store is currently closed? Any word on that? Thanks as well regarding the Dave Platt kit idea. I will look into it.

Holy crap! I'm really hoping they are not closed for good. It would be a real shame if they are gone for good as they have lots of nice kits, spinners, canopies etc... If you find a Dave Platt supplier let me know because their MK XII spinner is the right size from what I've been told.

Cheers,

Eric.

Hi Eric,

email Fun-key directly at [email protected]

they are the original manufacturer for yellow. They have responded to my emails about getting parts for a kit that I have.

Hope that helps.

Eric,

here is the information I got from Dave Platt. It looks like Belair Kits has all his kits and molds. Try them, they may be able to help you out.

john

Thanks for the info on funkeyaero. I will check them out as well.

Thanks John. I emailed Belair about a spinner but it looks like they sell all the accessories as a package and they are not cheap. I'll see what they say. The Platt spinner is a lot more scale than the Yellow one as well and would be a lot lighter. Wish me luck.

Cheers.

Ok guys here is the update:

1. funkey does have parts for the Spit
2. belaire kits has Dave Platt kits and accessories and was willing to sell me a canopy
3. I did purchase from the eBay post and the canopy fits perfectly.

Many thanks for all the suggestions especially the eBay posting.

This is best done when you build the airplane and not after the fact as I am doing here! The YA gear blocks are just in the foam only. Bad design. You have to extend the inner plywood gear block out to pick up and bond to the ply wing joiners. This is the only way to get significant strength. It requires some pretty serious surgery that you will see in the pictures depicted. It starts with ripping out the old blocks. Routing a slot for the new ply. Making new ply mounts. Bonding them in and replacing the foam and balsa you destroyed in the process. I used that Urethane glue to put things back in place. Either Gorilla Glue or ProBond work fine. I will try to scan or draw my inner wing template and get it posted out here with a link. Leo

I am building a YA Spit, and was curious to know if you could supply the template for your gear rail mod, and the dimensions of the hardwood that need to be replaced? thnk you for any help!

I also did the mod, I don't recall any formal measurements, the new lg block extends to the wheel well, one could put another ply rib at the end. these photos of Spychalla Aircraft mod may help. I used maple blocks and screw to hold the lg on, so far so good after 5 years. cheers - ken
