Wingspan Models 1/6 B-17 or BUST!!!!
Yep, another bloody one! I've decided go to a 1/6th scale B-17 from Winspan Models. I love the B-17 and I had so much fun doing the "Meister-Scale P-47 to Top Gun or Bust", I've decided to do it again and NO I will not be building this in 4 months!!!! Okay, so here are some specs.
* Wingspan: ............207"
* Length: .................146-1/4"
* Wing Area: ...........3375sqin
* Weight: ................85 to 100 lbs
* Engines: ...............4x - 50cc~60cc
* Servos: ................4-engine, 2-aileron, 2- flaps,
2-elevator, 1-rudder, 1- steering, 2-langing gear
I'm going with all JR "stuff" inside with 2.4 (let's face it, 2.4 rocks!), I am now the new rep for Quadra-Arrow so I'll be flying the new Q-400 series engines on her. Glassed, panel, rivets, more rivets, flaps, retracts, even more rivets, cockpit kit, and a few more rivets after that! So here we go for another round boys!!!
Keep em flying!

My friend George Hunter came down to help give me an extra set of hands on the wings. So here we are at around 11:00pm sat. We've been up all day at this and we are a little loopy.

I hate sheeting!!!!
However, it was fun to pop the wing off of the table and attach it to the fuse. for the first time! Wow, this plane is going to be pretty big!!!! That little guy in the picture is a 1/6th scale figure. It really puts things into perspective.

Hey, that's amazing, PJ! Those "Little Guys" look just like you and George!!! Seriously, that is gonna be one HUGE airplane. I'd be willing to bet that there's a forest missing somewhere south of here.
Now, one question jumps out at me here. This B-17 is going to be taking up a lot of your limited free time, right? You bet it is! Now, weren't you supposed to be designing a P-39 for your old buddy, Al? Hmmmm? [&o] That's okay, PJ. Build away. I wanna see this Fortress come to life!!!

Al, don't worry, anyone who knows me knows that I cannot build one thing at a time. Don't forget all the Meister-Scale stuff I'm doing!!! We had that wing laid out and built in a few hours. Its a REALLY easy build and I tend to work fast. I currently have about 6 projects on the table and still play with my kids daily and take my wife out on dates!!! I build at night when they go to sleep because, 1, I can't sleep and 2, its my therapy!

Oh yeah I forgot...if i end up moving home...we may need to sell both our trailers and invest in either a larger trailer, or an RV (one of those that has the motorcycle workshop in the back) to transport our birds...cause for some reason i got a crazy idea that two of these in formation would be sick!

Hey PJ looking good! Is that baby going to top gun 2009? Whats the sheeting trick your doing with the thin CA there? What are you wipping and going with?
Your going to have do a trailer up like "bubs".
All the best

Hey sorry it took so long to get back to you Peter. Good to talk to you man. What I do is lay the sheet down on the area and trace it with a pencil. Then I glue med or thick CA inside the area I just drew. After that I spray "kicker" on the side if the sheeting I lay down. This gives me time to lay it down and hold for it to set up. This works really well on compound curves when I only have one set of hands. I only glue the sheeting sides after they have been laid down and glued to the ribs/stringers, whatever. I then take thin CA and go over the seam and immediately follow with a good "rub down" on the seam so no CA spills over any side of the seam.
Hope that helps explain what I was doing.

RE: Wingspan Models 1/6 B-17 or BUST!!!!
Thanks for all of the comments guys. Yeah, I'm crazy, but to be honest with you, it has gone together so easy. Yes the plane is huge all together, but the stabs and wings come of and you have a big tube. Storage isn't going to be as bad as I thought. Everything and I mean EVERYTHING builds on those build tabs so all you have to have is a flat surface and everything is straight. I know the WingspanModels 1/12 and 1/9th build the same.
As far as weight goes, It will be under 100lbs. No guessing. Mac Hodges told me to come down and fly it at his field. I have to get a special waiver to fly the plane. he has an AMA guy there that gave him his with the B-29 and yes, it is basically the same size. Mac and I've talked and we would like to fly them in formation together. How would that sound!?! Of course, he will do the crazy loops, snaps, etc. Me.....I'll be flying "scale" and drop a crap load of bombs!
PJ
PS, I'll be in TX this week on vactaion drinking it up with good ole Dad! Any good hobby shops there? I'll be in McKinney/Dallas
