Ok, back to the surf board wing Doug.

The sheeting is all completed and the ailerons and flaps are fitted. Here I have glassed the top of the wing with 1.5 oz. cloth. I glass with Envirotex, thinned 100% with Acetone or denatured alcohol. It is brushed on like water. I prefer not to use the thick resin with squeegee or toilet paper dabbing techniques...make a mess. One problem I always did have was trying to see where all I had hit the resin with, and where I missed. A friend of mine gave me a good tip. Here you can see I added some green dye to the mix. This allows mee to see exactly where I have applied it and where I have missed. Ensures a nice coating.

Man, I can't believe it has already been 2 years since I started this plane. I am happily back at work on the finishing stages...guess I kinda forgot about this thread. Here is the latest on the zero. The stab was previously attached to the rear fuse section and the elevators fit and hinged. Here (this weekend) I have fit the wing to the fuse, and added the front and rear belly pan (rear balsa pan still needs final sand and glass after drywall mud is dry. I also have epoxied the front and rear fuse halves together. After the epoxy cures, I can add the rudder and add the tail surface push rods and rudder and then get to mounting the cowl and likely the cockpit kit.

Jeff,
I've been following this thread for some time now and glad you're back into it.
Does Ty still offer this fuse w/ accessories, as I didn't see it on his web site?

Hi Nick, you'd have to check with Ty. I think he has gone all cockpit mode, but he still may have the Zero available. The wing builds quickly as I had it built and sheeted in 8 evenings. So far a very nice kit...I just have too many projects to get any of them done.

There is a gentleman that has picked up all the molds and may produce the kit at some time in the future..

It is a 2 part epoxy varnish that is very similar to Z-poxy, except much cheaper, better finish and wet sands much easier. I buy it at Menards for $18 for (2) 12 oz. bottles. There is a thread dedicated to this that I started, if we can ind it.

I now have the zero fuse/cowl all in primer with the panel lines on. Here is a shot of the fuse and the cowl. I had to make my own headrest out of balsa and fit/sand to shape. You can also see the gun cutout/troughs. I have decided not to do rivets on this one, even tho I know they would add nice detail. Next step is to get the panel lines on the wing, fit the gear doors and final retract installation Also go the motor box installed for power which will be a Q-100.

Wow Jeff, I didn't realize you had this monster underway.

So many other cool projects you have been chipping away at...

Hope to see this one fly sometime...

Hey Jeff! Looks like she'll be ready for the upcoming season. How 'bout Phil's? Our Zero should also be ready in a couple of months. I'm seeing visions of a three element formation over the sky's of Chatfield and Owatonna this summer!

Hi Doug,

I am adding panel lines to my wing now. Phil just took possession of his Zero. I got it mostly built/assembled. He just has some finals to do on it, then I am going to take it back and glasss the wing and tail feathers for him. He is hoping to get it in the air this year, but it will be tough. He is finishing up on his 108 inch Nosen Corsair.

Jeff, great looking bird!

Are you anywhere near the 39 LBS weight that is claimed in the video. Seems very light for a 110" plane. Any nose weight or have you gotten to that point yet?

Looking forward to the flight report.

Hi Dave, I have not weighted it yet, but based on my 106 inch Me109 "Frankenschmit" that I built from a similar parts standpoint I don't think I will top 40 pounds. My Me109 came in at 37 pounds, and then topped at 41 pounds after the major post crash re-build. I will be surprised if this Zero tops 40 pounds. It is feeling pretty light. I should have it all assembled and weighed by the end of January, and I will post results.

Well, this unemployment gig is nice for the time being...I have had a lot of time to catch up on projects. The zero is all inprimer, and today I got the wing painted and the "meatballs" painted on the top and bottom. So, the wing is all ready to go with the servos, gear and gear doors all installed and painted. RCU acting up and I will post pictures when able.....

Hey Jeff! I noticed you're planning on powering this baby with possibly a Q-100. Lora picked up a new DLE-111 from Aeroworks for me for my B-day. It'll only take a 1/4" spacer to mount the DLE with the preexisting structure. Just finished up the repairs and cutting in flaps on my Meister 109 so the Zero is next up. Lots of snow here and no flying for probably a couple of weeks so I should at least get a good start on bringing the Zero back to flying condition. I think perhaps if you gave Phil the proper motivational grief, he'd get the Zero ready to participate in the planned invasion this summer!

I heard Phil was dropping warbirds and going to go all 3D crappie floppers!
