Ziroli Stuka or Meister Me-109
I'm thinking about building a scale warbird this winter and its between the ziroli stuka and the meister scale me-109 84"
My questions are, who makes a decent priced fiberglass fuselage for either one.
As well as which one would be more time consuming to build.
Thanks for the input.

I would say it all depends on your flying skills. Both are about the same approximate "scaleness" level...
That being said, the Stuka takes off/lands and flies like a kitty cat. The Bf 109 on the ground is a handful due to the narrow gear.
Both build rather easy.

Merlin,
I'm not worried about the air or ground handling. I just really would like to have a fiberglass fuse to save some building time
I also like the Stuka for the simple fact I don't have to buy any retracts for once. I also had a smaller stuka until last fall when I
lost it due to a stalled engine in a low speed, low altitude bank.
But, I really would like to have a 1/5 size ME-109 to go with my 1/5 Mustang. I only have time this winter to really build one so that is my
dilemma. Unless you want to build one for me.[sm=regular_smile.gif]

Ty Brown (Fockewulf 37 ?) should have a glass fuselage for a Stuka. He also sells a 109 in the size you desire.
The Meister 109 is an easier build the the Z-Stuka. I prefer the looks of the Stuka. Both fly well, with similar power.
The desert camo Stuka belongs to a friend. The Winter camo Stuka and the 109 are mine.

Technically Ty's 84" Bf109 is the same as the Meister.
I know Ty also offers a glass fuse for the Ziroli Stuka. I have one, its very nicely formed, with only a few small areas needing cleanup.
The lack of retracts on the Stuka is a huge advantage to keep the complexity of the airframe down and of course the cost!
My next plane following the D.VII build is the Ziroli Stuka. I am going to build both a glass fuse and a built-up wood fuse just to have both.

The Stuka builds out very light with the glass fuse . The prototype using the glass fuse was 24 lbs with g-62 . And had a plenty of power.
There is a build thread on RC Scale Builder using one of the glass fuses.

Thanks for the info guys, now I just have to make a decision.
One more question for those of you who have built either, can you completely enclose a gas engine
in either one. That is a also a big deal to me whether or not the engine can be enclosed or not without seeing
a carb or cylinder head protruding.

I have Sachs 4.2s in both my 109 and Stuka. I found it hard to conceal the motor in the 109. The Stuka just has the carb sticking out and I built an extra fairing to coneal one muffler bolt.

Due to the narrowness of the cowl on the Bf109 it may be hard unless the engine you are using is very narrow. Of course a rear mounted intake/carb would help as well as a wrap around exhaust. There is a little more room with the Stuka, but not much more...

I had the same disire to get a Stuka, no landing gear to mess with. I purchased a KMP Stuka and love it. It is still a handfull on take off & landing with the narrow gear, but flys great. I have a bomb drop on it too!

I've got a Ziroli Stuka, and a Platt 80" 109as mentioned above, the Stuka will slow WAY down on landing and ground handling isn't a problem. The Meister 109 will not ground handle nearly as well as the Stuka, but it depends on what you desire for flight performance I suppose. The Meister is a simpler buildespecially the wing. Both are winners, so might as well start collecting parts for both. If you can fly a warbird, you'll likely not have any problems flying either plane.

dvs1,
If you go with a rear facing carb and an inverted Pitts'-style muffler on your gas engine, it will fit within the Stuka's cowl just fine. I will be using a DA-50 in mine and it will have room to spare from what I see on the plans.

Thanks for the comments guys they are appreciated.
Decision made, I am going for the stuka. Have the short kit ordered from Laser lizzard, and will be aquiring the fuse from Ty Brown as well as
some of the other parts in the near future. I need to get my FW-190 finished and get my mustang glassed, then I will get started on the Stuka.
Does anyone know if Darrell from Sierra still has a few sets of gear for the stuka? If you are reading this Darrell, please let me know.

You will be pleased with your choice.
A Ziroli Stuka was flying at our field yesterday. When airborne, everybody there stopped to watch. It has a commanding presence !

DVS1,
Go with the Ziroli Stuka. Nothing looks as sinister as a bent-wing dive bomber in flight, especially with the Eastern front winter or African desert scheme. Sirens blasting, bombs dropping...
I have the opportunity to fly tandem with Nicky Jr. and Dad's original prototype at this years WOD. A twenty-four year old model! This speaks for itself in terms of flying characteristics.
Stuka's will always attract attention.

Well, I recieved my plans from Ziroli yesterday to go along with the short kit of the Stuka I purchased from Laser Lizard.
Who do you guys recommend to get your balsa from, Decent priced, good quality and fast shipping.
Also Landing gear choices, who besides Robart sells struts for the stuka, and who sells the pre bent wire landing gear?
Thanks for the info,
Curt

I've always used Longhorn Balsa, but since they burned to the ground, I've been using National Balsa, which is very good stuff and ships VERY quickly.
http://www.nationalbalsa.com/
as for pre-bent wires, I ended up getting my cut kit from Mace Gill, who supplied the bent wire as well (doing it myself was a total exercise in frustration as it is 1/4 wire). I don't know of anyone other than Robart that does Stuka struts, but I'm sure a call to Sierra or Shindin could fix that right quick.

Thanks Merlin,
national balsa was the name of the place I was thinking of but couldn't remember. Place my order up for some sheeting
and hardwood and I will get too it.

Just curious, is there another source for the sirens since I4C quit selling them?

I would also like to know if it is worth spending the extra time to make the dive brakes functional as in
the plans? Do most people just build them as static brakes or are a lot of them functional?
