I think this will work out much better. 2 layers of heavy cloth and 1 layer of 3/4 oz put down with uncut finishing resin.

Got the tail wheel assembly mounted up to the bulkhead. Held in place with some toothpicks (the poor mans Cleco). I'll be using Hysol to install the bulkheads.

nice work , dont know if you cut your seam in the doors yets , just want to share my experience , it seems like no matter how thin a wheel I use from my dremil I get a larger seem then needed (gap) , so now I usually use a very fine saw blade when cutting seams in doors . Turn over the curve so you can cut from the inside out and cut slowly so that you get the smallest , straightest cut possible

Thanks for the tip LDM. I'm not quite sure what to do with the TW door. It appears that on the full scale the front of the door goes up into the fuse and it has a smaller one behind the wheel. I'm not sure how that works. I may end up just leaving a hole where the wheel is or hinging some split doors. Take a look at the pic. Also, the outboard flap. What's up with that??

Anyone have the numbers on the controls surface throws? There is no mention of how much deflection to use on the plans.

Thanks

FlyPuck,

Indeed you are half correct, A Hellcat has a Triangular shaped door attached to the Gear leg, but no door over the tire itself.

Then I guess the most scale thing to do is cut the door short of the wheel and leave it open under the wheel.
Thanks for the input.

Right you are LDM. Single slot Fowler. I've just never seen one go so far out without moving down.
They can be replicated pretty easily with the proper hinging. Although not a true Fowler, they look pretty convincing.

Ran into my first major problem with the firewall today. This kit was designed to use a ST-2500 for power. Hence the funky firewall set-up.
I tryed mounting the engine to it and the prop was sticking out Waaaaay past the end of the cowl. Also, the magnito on the engine would be so far foward that I would basicly have to destroy the divider between the upper and lower openings of the cowl. I figure I have to drop the firewall 1-1/2" from it's present location to get the engine to fit correctly. I took a straight edge across the exsisting firewall and marked a line 1-1/2" down all the way around. This is where I figure the firewall needs to be.
I invite any and all opinions on if this is the correct way to fix the problem and any suggestions anyone might have before I start cutting.
PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks

The Hellcat actually uses a slotted flap and I have an old RCSM article on how to accomplish this on the Lien Hellcat. Lots of fiddling to get it right but it looks fantastic. I can send you a scan of the article if you're interested. The posted pic looks odd as I have never noticed the difference in deflection between the inboard and outboard flaps before. Wonder if that is just a byproduct of the operating linkage or if it was purposely designed to work that way?

I'm not sure what the deal is with that flap. Just looks really odd to me.
If you wouldn't mind scanning the article, that would be great.
Thanks for the help Chad!

Doug, I'm pretty sure I have the article scanned on my computer at work. I will forward it on Monday when I'm back in the office. Please send me a private email to the addy below as a reminder if you don't mind. I searched airliners.net for more pics of the Hellcat in the landing configuration and 99% of them are of the TFC airplane (the same one as in your pic) and they all show the same flap configuration that your pic shows. However, I found one of the Planes of Fame Hellcat landing (see link below) and the flaps on it are all deployed equally! I wonder if the configuration shown in your picture is a partial flap setting or something.

That would tend to make sense of it. Good observation.

Chad Ken Perkins build a Fairyfire fly with simmilar flaps. The flaps were extended in flight to increase fuel milage and range. Then extended down for landing. It might be the same.

I happened upon a F6F training video from the 40's I'm guessing. It stated that there were only 2 positions for the flaps, full up or full down with no intermediate position. More head scratching.

Mystery solved Flypuck! I took the question to the guys at the Warbird Information Exchange board and it didn't take long to find the answer. Apparently, much like the Wildcat before it, the Hellcat has flaps which can be forced closed by air pressure. I've read this was to lighten the pilot's work load in the event of a go around during carrier operations. There was no worry of over speeding and damaging the flaps so the pilot could just leave them extended and air pressure would close them up. So, apparently, the pilot in the TFC Hellcat in your pic is running around a bit fast with the flaps down.

And the winner is Chad. Not sure what you've won but at least your keeping me from beating my head against the wall thinking about it.
Nice work getting the answer. Interesting concept too.

Rudder servo mount and pushrod installed. I will glass around it later (ran out of epoxy brushes).
