Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Okay,
I now truely throw in the towel, I am thinking of starting to build those snap together models.
Peter, I think i will send you a set of plans for my T28 and you can let me know all the things you would do to make it as nice as your Avenger.
If my cohort gets his boat out of the water this week there is a slim chance we will have engine start and taxi test next Saturday, we should have the final balance done by Wed of this week
The P38 is rewired, and just waiting for 2 pro links to show up so I can finish with the outbaord flap install than off to the field to see if I can get it down without any damage
Strted working on the landing light for the Trojan thanks to my friend Dean and Boyd who are also building Trojans. Have to get the leading edge pieces cut to size so I can get those done so I can start on the ailerons... going to be a busy winter if the weather isn't good for flying.
Peter once again excellemt work, you should enter it in Top Gun Next year, it is a definite winner
Larry

Chic,
Building a Dave Platt Trojan, gear from Sierra precision. Been a slow build as I needed to take time out to repair the P38.
Should be back to the build the end of this week.. There is a build thread if you're interested, just 2 more guys that I have to try and live up to.
Charlie, anymore progress on the S-2, can't wait to watch the build.

The S-2 Tracker is getting closer. I want to finish the L-19 rehab and the D-18 before I start the S-2. The S-2 will be a two year project that I hope to start this winter.

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Hi guys
Charlie, glad to hear the news on the S2.
Avenger updat, finally totally balanced and weighed, comes in a tad under 44lns we think, we Re going to reweigh next week.
Engine start and taxi test scheduled for October 14th, can't wait to hear the DA-85 for the first time...
Balance was very finicky slight moves of the batteries to get it just a tad nose heavy.
P38 will be ready for its test flight next week, well see how well the 4 flaps work, just dont understand how things stretch out in time..oh yeah family and job, now I remember..LOL
Chic any update on your beast? Peter is certainly making us look really bad, thankfully I have the Trojan to try and make amends and get close to Peter, Charlie and Noah's handy work...
Enjoy the weekend

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Larry, The Avenger will fly great at 44 pounds. With all of that wing it won't even notice a few extra pounds. I guess you are looking at the 14th. so you can go to Warbirds over New Jersey on Saturday. If the weather is good I plan to go and get a few flights in.
Thanks for the nudge on the S-2 project. I called Robart and they are quoting a nose gear for the S-2. I think that I can use a standard Robart set of gears for the mains.
Good luck with your P-38 test flight.

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Charlie,
I could if I didn't have to go to a function for my bosses daughter... even on my time off they have me.
We weighed it last week but I am going to weigh it once more to be sure, I'm thinking closer to 46lbs but will post the actual on Thursday...not to mention that DA 85 pulling that weight, aren't you guys flying with 75's?
I just finished getting the flaps set up on the P38 and now find that I will need to come up with an alternate way to plug in the aileron and flap extensions since I'm having a hard time pushing the wires and connectors into the wings...it's never easy
Good Luck in NJ this weekend, if we decide to test fly sunday I will tray and get someone to video tape the flight...
Good Flying guys

Larry,
Good luck with the final pre-flight checks and testing. Even if you only taxi, shoot some pictures or video and share it with us here!
All the best,
Noah

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Hi guys,
Noah you beat me to the punch...
So we indeed took the plane down to the field on Sunday, Unfortuantely I plumbed the tank wrong. We did get the engine to pop after squirting some fuel in the cylinder.
We will replumb on Wednesday and will try again in 3 weeks as my build partner has something to do this weekend and I will be in AZ the weekend of the 27th. The guys at the field were as disappointed as we were as they wanted to hear the DA-85 run.
I am going to the PIMA museum in Tucson so if any of you need pix of any particular aircraft please let me know and I will try to take whatever pix you need.
The wind here on LI is starting to kick up, had to be at least 20mph with gusts to 25 on Sunday, could have almost used it for a kite... BTW, reweighed the plane and it came in at just over 44lbs

Hey guys, just sitting here in the shop wondering as I look over at my Avenger wing, what is the measured area of the wings in sq. inches? Larry, if you have time, you can shot me all the pictures of a T-28 Trojan you want, especially all the individual markings and labels on it. That will keep ya busy. Smile. I love that airframe also. Thanks. Chic

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Chic,
You got it, I bought bankas documentation pig last year in Marine colors, awesome shots. If I had a scanner that would scan faster than 1 scan every 30 minutes I'd scan them for you.. If there is a particular shot you want I'll look for it in the photo pack for you. Otherwise ill have a ton when I get back from Arizona.
If you get a chance google pins, Tucson, Arizona. After it comes up when u go to directions go to satellite view and zoom in...awesome what you'll see.
They have a couple of c-119 flying box cars, 3 b-52's a couple of super constellations, a p3 Orion etc...
I'm drooling just thinking about it
If anyone needs photos let me know and I'll try to oblige

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Hi guys
Thanks for the concern. I happen to be in sunny Arizona, the wife however had to stay behind to be close to her mom. She had power, cable and internet through the whole storm thankfully.
Chic, hopefully you weathered the storm without much problem, I hear gas is a big issue in NY and the potemtial for another nor'easter on Wednesday, hopefully not.
Chic, took a couple of shots of the c-119 for ya..
Thanks for keeping me in your thoughts throughout this

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
I know this is the Avenger thread, but I believe it is as much about those involved as the builds themselves, so this message is a note about one of your own. Earlier this year the MVAA Area-51 (Military and Vintage Aircraft Association) squadron was fortunate to have Noah move to Oklahoma and become a member of our group. Noah wasted no time establishing a new Military and Vintage Aircraft scale fly-in for our field, and today was a hit.
Here is the TBM at the event where Noah did a great job presenting this plane in flight. Also a photo of Noah, our newest Contest Director in the red cap fellowshipping with a visitor.
Great Job Noah!!

Noah,Noah, what are we to do with ya. Star of the show - thats our guy. Well, I can give up my CD certification now. Noah, the plane looks good after your slight rebuild. Larry, glad to hear you were not there in New York and that your wife and inlaws are well. Chic

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
You're too kind, you guys.
I must admit that on November 3rd I would generally be shoveling snow (or at least wearing a parka) if I were still back north. Very nice to instead be flying models in 65 degree weather!
Hard to tell from those photos above, but we had a large number of top-notch models show up and fly at our first Scale Meet event. I think we're off to a good start. Here are some of the award winning models:
