Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build

Chic,
The method we used had no effect on the flap warping, though I do like Ranger and Peters thoughts.
Work progresses slowly on the Trojan, hopefully will post some pix in the next week or 2 as soon as I get the panel lines drawn onto the flaps and ailerons.

CHIC, tracking all on sealing the wood to protect it. I guess I'm not sure how you are planning on finishing it. I assumed glass, then primer, then paint then panel lines and rivets etc... then weathering, then a coat or two of flat clear to lock it all in and protect everything. In my mind, the flat clear serves the same purpose as dope, and therefore the dope is redundant and not needed? But im just a dumb grunt, so please help me learn how to do this right because I am giving a lot of thought to starting a big P51 at my next duty station..... thinking an inline twin in the 100cc range.....

I'm contemplating the dope because I want the wood grain to be filled for a great finish. Not glassing the area under the wing panel where the flap will rest when retracted due to all the half ribs sticking out. But I do want to fill the balsa, thus the dope. Still thinking on it..........

On a few of my thermal soarers I sandwiched very thin carbon fiber strips that made the trailing edges very sharp and near drag free. Not at all hard and was most durable on those wingtip landings.

Hey Ranger and fellow Avenger fans, just dividing my shop time between the Avenger and what I will be flying this summer (Bird Dog, Sport Planes, Jet Trainer). We know the Avenger will not fly till next summer so I'm taking my time (slow of course) and trying to do a really decent build. Maybe even our northern friend will be proud of the end product. Smile. Stay well everyone. Chic

Not to worry, I'm 3, maybe 4 years behind on my TBF start date. Everything in it's own time I submit.
My Fleet is as near done but driving me crazy aligning the wings and flying wires. Anal retentive, I think, is the operable word here.

Chic, -- Where is the Avenger? I'm going to the field for 6 weeks of Jungle training starting on 21 April... hoping to see some progress before I go! Hope all is well with you and Shirley. -- Barrett

Chic,
I am also passing on my condolences. I had a few chances to correspond with your father and he seemed like a great guy. This pretty much sealed the deal on making the Avenger my next build. I hope to start this fall. By chance are there still short kits available?

Hi guys, appreciate all the kind words. Getting myself together to continue, finish, and compete with the Avenger. Charlie deserves it. Not sure about availability of short kits. I have heard that a member of his flying club may be trying to keep Charlies Kit Line going. Also, check with www.precisioncutkits.com Larry, the owner may be of great help. Chic

I once said "never," but the time has come:

All is well, but my work necessitates that I reset priorities, scale back, and wholly focus on my profession. So, I am stepping away from models/model building for the next several years. This model deserves to continue to be flown, cared for and enjoyed.
Time for someone else to have fun with it!

Noah,
Glad to hear that your stepping back is work related as I can definitely relate.
I just went through my wifes' pocket book and find that I am $4,493.25 short but I think Chic could use it to do his build from...
We are doing a minor mod to ours, we are attaching a dedicated servo for the rudder as the setup we had for the steering and the rudder would not let the rudder center when the stick was returned to center... live and learn...
On the plus side I just set it up for 2.4 on my Futaba 14sg, great radio and even a better price than the old 14MZ.
I wish you well my friend and hope to meet you next year my drive to Arizona....
Stay well
Larry

Hi, Larry.
Yes, dedicated servo is the way to go!
Look me up when you're passing through. I'm not going anywhere anytime soon! (keep scraping those pennies together guys!!!)
Best,
Noah

Jim,
Welcome to the group, you're in for quite a ride...
Don't hesitate to ask as many question as you need to, if you go back through the thread you will see that I probably asked the most.
