I sent my Robart TW retract and air kit to tower today. With the way it looked and was built I've decided to hold working on the fuselage until I get my Seirra TW retract. It is the same as my 1/4 scale only smaller. It is beautiful. I also had the welder use one of his huge machines make my canopy rails for me. Here is a picture of the rails and Seirra TW retract. This is the 1/4 scale without the bulkhead bracket on it but you can see his great craftsmenship. The man is master craftsman and very talented.

Well I'm sitting on my thumbs today waiting for my TW retract that was shipped today. Looks like I should build the rudder and finish the elevators.

While waiting for the TW retract I have been sanding the elevators. Then if the TW retact hasn't arrived I'll start to build the rudder. Then everything will be done for the fuselage.

I finished up on the elevators all except the LE and hinging. Now it's time to start on the rudder.

I am considering this kit for a winter project and wondered the diameter of the cowle. I am thinking of a saito 450 for this build. All my other stuff is 4 stroke glow and don't really want to convert to gas at this point. (winter is LONG in Maine!) and I think this will be perfect.

Thanks

I'll Have to measure it tomorrow and get back to you. I'm not in my shop right now. I finished my rudder and drilled the lightning holes today. It made a huge difference in weight.

I sanded all the ribs and the LE so it's ready to be covered. I'm still waiting on that darn TW retract or I could be finishing up the rough out of the fuselage. I really don't want to pull the plan off the board and start the wing and then have the TW retract arrive Monday or Tuesday. I guess I'll have to find something else to do.

Andy,

The diameter of the cowl is 10-1/8" at the firewall. I don't have the diameter of the rest because I am not using it because it's ABS plastic and you have to cut and glue it together. It's real flimsy. I elected to go with the detailed cowling from Fiberglass Specialties where I get all my fiberglass parts that I don't make myself.

Good Morning I'm Italian.

I have a question about the Giant F4U Corsair kit.

Is possible to know what is the exactly diameter of the engine cowl?

Thanks,

Massimo.

I'm working on building a engine test stand for my gas engines. The firewall is 3/4" aircraft grade ply and the rest is 3/8" aircraft grade ply. I still have to put dowels in and screws to add strength to the already epoxied wood joints. I used 30 minute epoxy. I'll add a fuel tank and throttle servo plus a manual choke rod. It will be clamped to the bench when testing engines.

Andy,

That is the reason I have build threads, so other builders can follow along and use what they like and disregard what they don't. I try to do a good job on all my builds and this is the love of my life. Building and Corsairs are what I like the most. Flying is fun and I do but I'd rather be building if it's not a fly in or competetion. The first 2 pictures are of my completed 1/8 scale TF Corsair and the last 2 are of my Monster Don Smith 1/4 scale Corsair with over a 10 foot wingspan thats being built at the same time as this 1/5 scale TF Giant Corsair. All of my Warbirds have all the details right down to working lights.

I'm finishing up on my engine test stand and still waiting on parts from Top Flite, Seirra, and Tower Hobbies. I hope this stuff comes today. I also got my cowl from Fiberglass Specialties but the box got damaged and the cowl got cracked. Craig is kindly sending me a new one to replace it. My 24x10 Bolly prop came in today and I got the pins out of the backplate so I don't have to alter the balance by drilling for them.

Today I cut out the cockpit floor that holds up the instrument panel for strenght and then cut a new one from 1/8" plywood. I glued that in and then worked some more on my test stand. I also decided since I'm waiting on parts from several different companies before I can continue on with the build that I'd play around with my pilot Ted Williams the famous baseball player that got drafted into the Korean War. Here he is bat and all.

Being from Maine and a HUGE Red Sox fan I got a kick out of your pilot. I had an opportunity to fish for a week with Ted 25 years ago. It will be something I will never forget. He was a great guy. Where did you get the pilot?

Andy,

Yes the wing is seperate from the fuselage and held on with two 1/4"x20 nylon bolts in the rear and dowels up front. Ted came off ebay. I got him for $4.50 plus shipping. He was a display pilot and the box was in excellant condition but the plastic was removed so people could see him better in pictures. Good luck finding on. I hope you can. Did Ted ever fly the Corsair or any Warbird?

NCIS,

Have you considered making the wings removable, so that it will sit on the gear can transport it easier I am considering doing this, i have seen people make the wings fold but I don't know of anyone who made the outer panels removable. Looking at it seems pretty easy to do but since I have not done such a thinh I am wondering what you or anyone thinks about it.

I have thought about doing it also. I did it on my 1/4 scale Corsair and it was easy. Now I haven't gotten to the flaps yet but if I do the same there as on my 1/4 scale. I will just need an inner flap servo and outer flap servo on each wing. Then just cut holes for wing tubes.

Gibbs,
I should have been more specific with respect to the wing. I too was thinking of just the ends so it would sit on the gear.

Yep that's about what I was thinking. Looking at the plans it seems like an easy task. Will take a little reinforcement here and there but not too much.

Ok guys

From an ooold engineer on this size bird the only draw back that I see is getting enough strength in the curve area did some numbers a coupla yeaer back assuming 100 mph and a max of 8 g's positive, and I felt the weight penelty was to much, but I do think it can be done.

I'm still waiting on my Seirra TW Retract so I can build around it instead of going forward and having to tear things apart. The Seirra retract mounts totally different than the Robart TW.

Bob,

Take a picture of the fuselage where the engine box meets up with it. I just can't see it in the picture.

I got my Seirra TW retract today and it looks great. It will raise the tail by 2". It's a much better stance. Here are a couple pictures of it in the retracted position and the extended position as I moved it back about an inch. It fits pretty good. I shouldn't have to modify much other than add support and maybe cut a little out of the torque support block for the rudder. Tell me what you think. I'll also be using Seirra for the mains which will raise the nose just a little.
