RE: Unknown Ki-61
I set mine 15mm ahead of the specified CG and then removed nose weight a bit at a time for several flights 'til it settled in the way I felt like was best. About 7oz/200g removed total. The CMP planes always seemed very tail heavy per specs and even though this came from a different mfg I was still wary. A nose heavy plane flies poorly but a tail heavy plane only flies once; With that in mind I usually err on the side of being a bit nose heavy and work back from there.

RE: Unknown Ki-61
I have acouple of very basic questions on this model.
1. Did you guys epoxy the wing joiner into one of the wings?
2. How did you secure the wing to the fuse? It looks like my wings have a blind nut attached, but its not clear which bolts to use. My kit came with one (1) nylon bolt, but the diameter is much larger that the blind nut by alot.
3. Should I purchasea smaller nylon bolt for the wing attachment (approx. 1-inch long,6-32).
4. What is this nylon bolt for if not intended for the wing? I don't want to leave it out if I need it.
The so-called manual (on disk) isnt helpful.Anyassitance you guys can provide will be appreciated.

Hi there.
I see you are a new member so let be the first to welcome you on board!!
My KI-61 is pretty heavily bashed/modified but the principals are still the same.
Wing tube is loose on mine but there's no outstanding reason not to glue it into one side, other than ease of storage.
I use a steel socket head bolt and a large washer to fasten the wing and I put a small hatch on the bottom of the plane so I can access it easily. (see pic) Might be more difficult on one with the original covering. Might also be better to use a hex head fastener so you can tighten with a small ratcheting socket driver without a bottom access. Nylon will probably work but I think steel is sturdier for this application; not sure how well nylon stands up to the pulling forces of aileron rolls.
No clue as to what a stray nylon bolt might be for. Sometime the contents of an ARF box are a complete mystery
Most ARF manuals are also a complete mystery, so no surprise there. I've been building, modifying and flying a while so most assemblies have become self evident over time and experience. Typically the manual hits the bin shortly after emptying the box.
Keep us posted on your assembly and experiences.
Cheers!

Thanks a million Frets24,
This helps alot. I'll keep you guys posted. Please keep in mind this will not be a piece of art by the bashers' standards, but it will be a safe and airworthy airplane (I hope). Undoubtedly, more questions to come.

Hi Nev I have one of these on the table at the moment. Stripped the covering and reshaped the fuse then glasses and painted. Just doing servo hatches now then onto motor fitting. So shouldn't be too far away from a maiden. They're a cool looking plane hope it flies as well. All the best. chuck

Hey Nev I've just relocated to Darwin from brisbane.
I say go with the fuse mod its very easy. All I did was lay a slab of 6mm balsa along the bottom aft of the radiator and 1.5mm on the sides and blended it all in.
Looks so much better than those hard edges.

Hey Frets I'll try and get some decent aerial shots if I can.
AUW came in about or just under 5kgs from memory, CG set at 105 as per your previous recommendation and handles nicely there.
Very happy with this plane, especially too its a bargain from HK.

Hey 7aso! I was really happy to see this pop up on my notifications. Happy to see that you are still participating in the RC community. I haven't had a lot of time to fly lately oh, but I do still have my ki-61. Flew it a few years ago and it was as great as it was a decade ago when I first put it together. Where did you find your kit? That is certainly a kit that I would love to have a backup for.

Frets, it popped up on my Ebay feed last week so I said why not?
I stripped the covering so I can have better access to the plane and applied the wing fairings. I do not recommend what I did - the old fashion Royal "carve to shape" step. I also added a little slope to the front of the stab which I will sand to shape. The top of the stab is wrong too which will be corrected.
I ran out of sand paper and I'm also going to incorporate your tailwheel setup. I have the Du-Bro tailwheel on the way.
In the mean time I'm going to start working on the retracts while I wait.

I'm only fixing what needs to be corrected to make this look like an actual Tony from the bottom. The construction is actually very solid and the fb cowl is very detailed. Also, the Eflite 60 - 120 85 deg retracts drop right in with just a little bit of sanding to make room for the actuator.
Does anyone know where I can get nomenclature for a Ki-61?

While I'm waiting for the tailwheel and struts to come in, I went ahead and recovered it. It's not my best covering job, but it will do.
I threw on some old Major Decals I had laying around, but will replace them when my Callie graphics come in. I have the "Z" for the tail but its white, not red like the paint scheme is supposed to be so I left them out.
Also, the yellow identification stripe on the leading edge was too long by 1" so I shortened them.
Radiator and supercharger are next.

Looks like it's coming along nicely. I always liked the #88 scheme from the 244th sentai. My latest Ki-61 was built from a Arturo Zapata kit. 126" wingspan, and a ZDZ112 inline twin for power. Mine is the long nose Tei, so I couldn't use the #88 scheme. I picked one that's similar, although it has the typical sprayed on camo. Good luck with your Tony!
