Scale P-51
Looking for a little help here. Trying to figure out what would be a good scale P-51 to build that is not giant scale. want to keep the budget down. Looking at 65 to 75 inch span range. Would prefer not to have to build up(ie fiber fuse etc). Most important is scale fidelity. Can make mods etc but obviously the least amount of changes the better. Let me know wat you think the best kit is.
Thanks

RE: Scale P-51
Bob Holman still has the parts for the BT Mustang. I'm currently working on one. Its very nice. Also Tony Howard may be able to provide scale exhauct shrouds and pipes. Mine has the glass fuse. Also Bob Holman had all ne loulds produced for the cowl and scoop since the original Taylor parts are no longer available. I bought a set from Bob even though I have the originals to see if the lay up work was lighter. The moulded in detail is the same. Here is a couple of pictures.

Even with smaller airplanes I ended up with $1500+
Here is my thought on a budged P51:
Topflite P-51 the uncovered version, so you can modify and fiberglass the aircraft.
The retracts for this bird are not that much higher the for the 71 inch ones in some cases the robart are less!
The engine should be a 50cc gasser they start with $299 the savings compare to a glow is about $150 in fuel in a busy season.
Servos are not much different too, we talking in total not much difference between 71 or 85 inch.
Now, with an 85 inch bird that flies better, lands better, looks better, less wind sensitive and easier to work with - it is almost a no brainer.
Hope this helps

RE: Scale P-51
Hi All,
I agree with the Brian Taylor P51 being the most scale. I also agree that the TopFlite model is a great package ( but not if you are into scale fidelity.)
I think it is common knowledge that the TF P51 is "out of scale" in a number of areas, most of which are ,unfortunately, not easy to rectify. The Engine thrust line is too low making for a dropped cowl outline, the tailplane is out of alignment for scale, the rear fuse is too narrow and the canopy is wrong. There are other issues with the U/C too.
However, a nicely detailed TF P51 can can look great and many would not be aware of , or care about these discrepancies.
But, for a more scale model, the Taylor is great. (So too is the Aerotech, but it is expensive )
I am putting together a CMpro 72" ARF Mustang. This model has a very accurate f/g fuse and tail and is cheap(ish ) The wings are scale in plan but have a thicker section ( which helps it fly very comfortagly!) The canopy and U/C are crappy and so I plan to" redo " these items. Should make a nice P51 close to scale in many important areas ( IMO ) There are a number of threads on this model in this forum and worth a look if you think this model could be to your liking. There are a couple of short threads re the B.T. mustang over on RC Scalebuilder. and there are heaps of threads on the TF model here.
Cheers,
Keith.

KMP also makes a couple nice P51s. They are glass and have very nice details like panel lines and painted on graphics. They also fly great!

RE: Scale P-51
Hello Guys,
I would like to add my words: I'm presently building a Brian Taylor Mustang (69') and it is a very nice plane! Very scale and not too difficult to build! I think it is a great model!
And also, perhaps I am wrong, and unless it is not possible anymore (Brian Taylor's retirement?), I did buy the parts from BT himself! I just called him at his house and ordered the canopy, cowl... and of course the plan!
You can trust this plane, building a mustang from this plan is not a mistake at all!
Cheers,
Nico

RE: Scale P-51
I have a friend with a mustang 72" span and he flies it on a 180 which he thinks is about right. Think it may be an artf so it is probably on the heavy side compared to the b/t mustang although im just guessing.

Go for the BT one, I'm building TF 1/5 scale mustang, It's a great kit but far from scale I've had to modify almost all of it:
Is it worth doing what I've done.................No, just build from a scale plan to start with
Good luck with your build
Cheers, Alex

Have you seen the new ESM Mustang? They come in both B and D version and look really good. http://www.kmp.ca/product_info.php?p...b741491cf33c4e

Don't think they offer it anymore Ram-bro but they did have one around 75 inches. It was sport scale but definitely looked better than alot of the Mustang kits available. Sales must not have been too good I guess.

RE: Scale P-51
Dear All,
I would like to come back onto the engine issue for this plane...
Is it possible to set an engine with an additional gearbox allowing to run a bigger propeller?
Is there a requirement in term of engine power? I mean is it possible to do so with a 1.20 or 1.40 engine?
My idea would be to run a scale 4-blade propeller... It would be really nice fitting the Mustang with a beautiful 4-blade black propeller!
If so, does someone know where it is possible to find such gearbox kits?
Thanks a lot!
Nicolas

have a 90 webber with gear box. would be a good engine for mustang.. going to seel it because have gone to gas.. has never been run.. told it would handle a 22 inch prop at 5400rpm.. have it on my desk.
